For Kit Harington, the young English actor who plays Jon Snow in “Game of Thrones,” the show is a coming-of-age story — his own.

Though Harington had acted on stage before the HBO fantasy series, which wraps up its third season Sunday, “Thrones” marks his first role in front of a camera, and it’s a big one. Jon Snow plays an increasingly significant part in “Thrones” and George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, on which the sprawling TV show is based.

“By the time it goes the distance, it will be years and years,” said Harington, 26, over drinks at the Four Seasons hotel’s Windows Lounge in Beverly Hills earlier this spring. “It will be most of my 20s, really. You look at it in those terms, and that’s a big portion of my life that I’m dedicating to this show. So I’ve got to love it.”

Harington says he does, largely because he identifies with his character. He admits to peeking ahead in Jon Snow’s future, reading four of Martin’s seven planned books in the series.

“I devoured them, really,” he said. “I stopped because I got way too far ahead of myself. He becomes an older, different person, and I had to really reel back my mind for Season 1, because he’s just this young chap, and none of that world has hit him yet...”

K9 follows the adventures of the robotic canine created by British writers Bob Baker and Dave Martin and first seen in the original 1978 season of Doctor Who. The show mixes live action with stunning CGI and special effects and pits the robot dog K9 and his teenage friends against a number of human and alien adversaries. The new dog is voiced by the legendary John Leeson, who voiced the original K9 from the 1978 Doctor Who series.

Creator Bob Baker has won a number of BAFTAs for his co-writing of the hugely successful Wallace and Gromit shorts and feature, and together with his business partner Paul Tams, was closely involved in the creation of the new K9 series.

04:00 AM Regeneration

Whilst Starkey (Keegan Joyce) and Jorjie (Philippa Coulthard) are trying to escape the police they take refuge in a large detached house, now the residence of reclusive scientist, Professor Gryffen (Robert Moloney).

Inside the dilapidated mansion, they see Gryffen absorbed in an experiment with a strange piece of alien technology, a Space Time Manipulator. Darius (Daniel Webber) an artful dodger who, among his many occupations, runs errands for Gryffen, confronts the pair, but at that moment a portal opens and through the hole torn in the fabric of space/time burst two reptilian warrior Jixen. The Jixen try to attack Starkey but the teenager is saved by a small dog-like robot, K9 Mark I.

In the ensuing battle, the only way K9 can defeat the Jixen is to blow himself and them to pieces. One surviving Jixen limps out of the mansion. Before expiring, K9 is able to give instructions that allow Starkey to initiate a regeneration program. A new, more sophisticated and futuristically designed K9 is regenerated.

He traveled to the far-flung Delta Quadrant onboard a Federation starship in Star Trek: Voyager, helped maintain law and order in the city of Vancouver as a police chief in Da Vinci’s Inquest as well as Da Vinci’s City Hall, and even did a brief tour of duty in the U.S. Marine corps in NCIS. You never know where the talented and congenial actor Brian Markinson might turn up next, but what audiences can always count on is that he will deliver a convincing and compelling performance. When the casting call went out for the character of Vancouver City Police Inspector Dillon in the popular Sci-Fi TV series Continuum, the actor’s interest was piqued.

“I knew of [series creator/executive producer] Simon Barry because we have several mutual friends, and I'd also been hearing about this time traveling series that was going to be made,” says Markinson. “Most of the cast had already read for a myriad of roles and I then literally came in at the 11th hour. I met with [executive producers] Jeff King and Pat Williams, who I knew from [the TV series] Shattered, along with Simon Barry and Jon Cassar, who directed our first two episodes. I read a couple of scenes for them, we talked for a bit, then I left, and the next day I got a call with an offer for the part.

“So it was a very simple process for me, not unlike auditioning for a guest-star role, and I really enjoyed what I’d read. I thought the script for Continuum was incredibly intelligent and that its success would all come down to its execution, but obviously the person who thought it up had a big brain. Again, I was impressed with the writing, mainly because of the geo-political sort of resonance it had with today’s world. It was a different type of Science Fiction. We had a great deal of work to do in the first two episodes and we were fortunate to have Jon Cassar, who comes from the world of 24 and other really big shows, onboard with us. So I just had a lot of optimism in terms of what the future could hold for this project if we got it right...”

At the age of 10, Erik Knudsen played on a children’s hockey team that was chosen to appear in a Visa TV commercial. Little did the actor realize the impact that this event would later have on his life. “I loved it and I always wanted to act after that,” he says. “My parents, of course, were always telling me to have a back-up plan just in case things didn’t work out.

“When I was younger I wanted to be a policeman. I thought that that would be an awesome job and still do, but unfortunately I don’t think I have quite what it takes. I’m 5’ 8” and 125 pounds, so it would probably be kind of difficult. I always wanted to be an actor, though, and felt that if I had a back-up, it would allow me to give up too easily on my dream. So I don’t have a back-up right now. I’m just concentrating on my acting and would love to do that for the rest of my life, and maybe direct down the road.”

In Knudsen’s case, hard work and perseverance have certainly paid off in the form of several feature film and TV credits. Currently, the affable and talented actor is playing Alec Sadler in the hit Canadian TV Sci-Fi/Police Drama Continuum. When Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a Vancouver CPS (City Protective Services) officer in the year 2077, is unexpectedly sent back in time to Vancouver 2012 along with a group of convicted terrorists, the technology in the future suit she is wearing manages to connect with a frequency used by Alec...

... SATURDAY NIGHT SYFY: Don't get too attached to the new fantasy imports debuting on Syfy this weekend. Neither was renewed in their respective countries past the first season. (As with Merlin, which at least got a five-season run before the producers decided to end the story, don't blame Syfy when the shows disappear. Not the network's call. It's just the buyer.)

... So are the CGI dinosaurs invading Canada in Primeval: New World (Saturday, 10/9c), an otherwise drab reboot of the British series that earned acclaim during its intermittent run on BBC America. Niall Matter, an enjoyable scene-stealer as bad boy Zane on the much-missed Eureka, seems neutered as dull Evan Cross, a scientist with his own company who spends his time and resources seeking out temporal anomalies from which prehistoric creatures regularly emerge. Andrew-Lee Potts, the gung-ho Connor from the original Primeval, appears in the pilot to warn Cross to leave well enough alone. But does he listen? Wouldn't be a show if he did...


Primeval: New World cast includes Eureka's Niall Matter, Sara Canning, Danny Rahim, Crystal Lowe, Miranda Frigon and Geoff Gustafson.

The not-half-bad British Sinbad (Saturday, 9/8c) is good family fun, a visually appealing romp filmed in Malta, starring Elliot Knight as the roguish Middle Eastern scamp who hits the high seas for adventure to escape the wrath of a vengeful royal (Lost's Naveen Andrews). A watery sea creature that wreaks havoc during a perilous storm is a step up from the monsters we tend to associate with Syfy's Saturday night cheesefest movies...
