TV GUIDE: Matt's TV Week in Review

Feb 10, 2012
by Matt Roush

... DOWN MEMORY LANE: As "what if" episodes go, NCIS' 200th episode affirmation of Jethro Gibbs' life and labors — with Muse Watson's Mike Franks acting as his guardian angel as a diner is overrun by acquaintances past and present — was a big improvement over last week's Grey's Anatomy stunt. Any excuse to peel back layers from Gibbs' aloof, gruff façade is welcome, and as we revisit some of his and the show's turning points — the assassination of Kate by Ari (if he'd saved her, would she really have married Tony and started a family?), his execution of Hernandez as payback for his wife and daughter's murder — we're reminded of his sacrifices, but also of all the lives he's saved along the way as the leader of the NCIS team. "I wanted both," he tells his beloved Shannon, rather heartbreakingly. But ultimately, no regrets as he seizes the moment back in the present and disarms the troubled son of the man he just jailed. Back at work with a sling the next day, he joins the team on a new case: "My choice. I wouldn't have it any other way." Neither would his millions of fans...

NCIS airs Tuesday at 8/7C on CBS.

TV GUIDE: Weekend TV Review: Return of the Dead, Friday Means Fringe, and More

Feb 10, 2012
by Matt Roush

... It's hard to keep up with all the cult fantasy airing on Fridays these days, so I was glad to get an advance screener of NBC's Grimm (9/8c) to reacquaint myself with this diverting creep show. This week's fiend, played by genre fave Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse), is something of a lethal spider woman — though when threatened has as aspect of a spider monkey as well. Her story is enjoyably icky, but the better parts of this episode involve Nick (David Giuntoli) dealing with his unwanted notoriety among the local creature population. "You're the monster under the bed," Monroe (the always enjoyable Silas Weir Mitchell) tells him, reminding him of the power of the Grimm legend. "You're not real. You're a scary story we tell our kids." Grimm is something of a bedtime story for kids of all ages: not too scary, not too silly. Just about right for Friday nights...

COLLIDER: Executive Producer Julie Plec Talks THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, Season 3 Finale, and More

by Christina Radish
February 10th, 2012

On the last episode of The CW drama series The Vampire Diaries, called “Dangerous Liaisons,” viewers learned that the mother of the Original vampires is not quite as loving of her children as she appears. With her nefarious plan set in motion, thanks in part to Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and the blood of the doppleganger, things are sure to get more intense, leading up to the Season 3 finale.

During a recent interview to hint at what’s to come, executive producer/writer Julie Plec talked about the Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) love triangle that Elena is stuck in, exploring Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) humanity, whether or not any of the Originals will survive what’s been set in motion, where the Klaus and Caroline (Candice Accola) relationship could be headed and where that leaves Tyler (Michael Trevino), the unique position that Matt (Zach Roerig) is in as one of the only humans left in Mystic Falls, what’s in store for Bonnie (Kat Graham) and her mother, how Alaric’s (Matthew Davis) ring failing is going to be causing some problems, that Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) will return before the end of the season, and that viewers cannot be certain about the fate of anyone...

... Q: Where is the Klaus and Caroline relationship heading?

Julie Plec: "I can’t really say where it’s heading or if it’s heading. For us, it’s fun to explore that side of Klaus, seeing a romantic vulnerability there because it is giving us a window into him, a little bit. We also love watching Caroline who, at the beginning of the series, before she was a vampire, she was just desperate to be chosen by anyone. Now, the king of all evil vampires has plucked her from obscurity, in his mind, and said, “I bestow upon you my affection, my gifts and my flirtation,” and our girl, who has come so far, is like, “Talk to the hand, buddy.” So, to see her take that stance against him and in defense of Tyler, is a really big deal for her. We find Klaus to be irresistible, on a lot of levels, and presumably some of the audience does, too. It will be interesting to see how that moves forward..."

The Vampire Diaries airs Thurday at 8/7C on The CW.

TV GUIDE: Weekend TV Review: Return of the Dead, Friday Means Fringe, and More

Feb 10, 2012
by Matt Roush

... MORE FROM THE CULT CORNER: One aspect of Fox's fabulous if frighteningly low-rated Fringe that I most enjoy is that it rarely feels like the same show from week to week. This Friday's exciting sci-fi thriller (9/8c), "Welcome to Westfield," might have come from the archives of The Twilight Zone or The X-Files — or Supernatural in the way it takes our heroes far off the beaten path (even Walter, getting out of the lab for a change) to investigate a horrific anomaly. But the underlying causes are rooted firmly in Fringe mythology. TV's favorite mad scientist accompanies Olivia and Peter to a small Vermont burg under the throes of an electromagnetic disturbance that ends up trapping them within the city limits while most of the populace begins going mad. "How can an entire town turn schizophrenic overnight?" wonders Olivia as the locals begin exhibiting behaviors from someone else's lives.

Could the answer lie in the colliding universes, one reality bleeding into another with the usual cataclysmic effect? Even Olivia, who's been dreaming lately of Peter-from-another-timeline, begins to wonder if "there's somebody else in my head." Walter has a simpler answer for this no-exit dilemma: "I've seen this once before: Brigadoon." Well, it's true that watching Fringe is almost like being in love (to quote a song from that score)...

NBC, 9 p.m. ET

It’s an evening in which, by coincidence, some of the Friday night genre shows earn special mention for one reason or another. On this show, it’s because the guest star is Amy Acker, playing a woman who dons various disguises to go out on the prowl in search for male victims. (Where do I sign?) And her appearance here is a reunion of sorts: She co-starred on Angel, a series co-created by David Greenwalt, one of the executive producers of Grimm.

... Fringe

9-10 PM FOX

A small Vermont town turns into a place Olivia, Peter, and Walter cannot leave, in a tale complete with knowing references to Brigadoon and The Wizard of Oz. The citizens of Westfield are replicating inside themselves (growing two rows of teeth, multiple eyes — ick). It's a classic Fringe setup: a bizarre case ("an entire town turned schizophrenic," as Olivia says) that steadily connects with the series' overarching mythology. Yes, as Peter continues to try to get back to his timeline, Vermont becomes a site for further hostile experiments by one of the series' best villains. And the ending is a deliriously romantic, startling one. All this, plus Walter's latest, almost yummy invention: "breakfast cocktails"!
