TV GUIDE: Fringe Oral History: How the Series Changed Forever with One Sacrificial Act

Jan 16, 2013
by Natalie Abrams

In the third part of our farewell to Fringe, producers and cast discuss the most polarizing story line of the series: The Season 3 cliff-hanger featured a scene in which Peter Bishop, who we had come to know and love over three seasons, mysteriously vanished into thin air. The Observers then explained that he had, in fact, never existed. (Come again?) This controversial creative move ended a season that included Fringe's foreboding move to the Friday "death slot." Still, the show soldiered on for another two seasons, much to the credit of its passionate fan base...

Fringe Oral History Part 1: Building the world of "science fact"- Part One

Fringe Oral History Part 2: Dual universes open up a new world of possibility - Part Two

TVGuide.com talked to stars John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop), Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop), Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham), Jasika Nicole (Astrid Farnsworth), Lance Reddick (Phillip Broyles), Blair Brown (Nina Sharp), Seth Gabel (Lincoln Lee), series co-creator J.J. Abrams, executive producers J.H Wyman, Jeff Pinkner and Bryan Burk, Warner Bros. President Peter Roth and Fox's Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly about the bumpy road to the series finale. This is the third in a four-part oral history...

... TV Guide: The credit, most will say, goes to the fans for keeping the show alive.

Burk: "The show obviously stayed on the air 100 percent because of the fans who watched the show and who were passionate about the show and loved the show."

Noble: "This is not just me saying this, I don't think there's ever been a fan base like there is for Fringe. I mean, I thought it was pretty impressive with Lord of the Rings, but there's nothing quite like the fan base of Fringe. Certainly it's only because the fans we're still here."

Gabel: "It's incredible to know how passionate the fans of this show are and how powerful they are. They've been able to keep it on the air even though statistically it doesn't really have a right to be on the air. The show has become this incredible anomaly in the history of television that is a testament to the power that our fans have and the kind of storytelling that we receive."

Reddick: "For somebody who never really paid much attention to the fans, the fans have come to mean everything to me."

Roth: "The outpouring of support that I would see every year both online, at Comic-Con, and most especially at the time of pickup was so extraordinary and so heartening and so satisfying that it was galvanizing for all of us. This fan base kept this show going."

Jackson: "Without the passionate support from the fans of the show, we would have faded to black long ago. It has also meant some of the most jaw-dropping experiences I've ever had as an actor. I will never forget the Comic-Con experiences."

J.H. Wyman: "I really, really feel like the reason why our fans are our fans is because they're like-minded people that are concerned with the same things that I'm concerned with. How do we make life bearable in the darkest of times? That's why you get moments like at Comic-Con with the [fans holding up the] White Tulips [at the show's final panel] and all these incredible things they've done for our program. Yeah, they're passionate."

Reilly: "Though the fact that I got 12,000 cases of Red Vines was more of an inconvenience than an influence." [Laughs]

Noble: "I think the reason is that Fringe is essentially a family story. I guess the folks really identify with all of the characters. I get the sense that people have really become attached to us as this family. You take that away and what you're left with is a very clever science show. But that's the thing that meant the most to me anyway..."

Fringe Friday

SFX MAGAZINE: Fringe: Showrunner Looks Back Over The 5 Years Of The Show

January 17 2013

This weekend witnesses the end of an era. The final ever episode of Fringe airs in the US and around the world (on Sky here in the UK). Who’d have though five years ago that a show that launched looking like X-Files-lite would end up being one of the greatest telefantasy events in history?

To celebrate the moment here’s an interview with current Fringe showrunner JH Wyman which originally appeared exclusively in the SFX A-Z Of Sci-Fi TV (which is still on sale, but only for another couple of weeks). Wyman looks back at each year on the show and his contributions to each of them...

fringe_finale_poster1

... SEASON ONE

Wyman was asked to join Fringe around episode 1.14 (“Ability”) “JJ Abrams had asked if I’d come in and help because they hadn’t found the show yet. It was sort of stuck between this really awesome pilot, and, ‘Where do we go from here?’ It had procedural elements so was it an X-Files clone? What was it about? Basically, I said to them, ‘I love science fiction but I haven’t written a lot of it’. I adore it, of course, but JJ said it was really about a family and not to worry because I’d love it. Ultimately, I realised the better the science fiction, the more about humanity it was. Once I realised that, I was like, ‘Okay, I can do a million of these. I love this!’

I think we started to find the show at the end of the first season. Everybody started to think in different directions, but ultimately it came down to executive producer Bryan Burk – a little known fact! We were sitting around and I was coming up with the concept that there’s more than one of everything and the idea of a coin. There would be two coins: one for Over Here and one for Over There. Bryan blurted out in the writer’s room, ‘We have to show the hatch!’ It was brilliant because it was true. We were covering the ball so much and nobody was compelled. The audience didn’t know what was going on, or where the show was going. So once we let the cat out of the bag – that Peter is from another place and Walter is hiding a terrible secret – the show began to take purchase. It was a defining moment...

BLASTR: Haven stars promise 'cruel' S3 finale is going to blow your mind

By Kathie Huddleston
Jan 17, 2013

The final two episodes of Syfy's Haven will premiere tonight, but whatever you think you know about the season so far, think again, said actors Emily Rose, Eric Balfour and Adam Copeland. The "comedic sort of episode," "Reunion," will air at 8 p.m. ET, immediately followed by the "mind-blowing" finale, "Thanks for the Memories," at 9 p.m.

"I think the thing that was crazy for me about this [first] episode tonight was I was a little perplexed, to be honest with you, that it was a more comedic sort of episode," said Rose, who plays Audrey Parker. "We're coming into this big, huge, massive cliffhanger and we're going to laugh? And I just remember being very pleasantly surprised and going okay, 'it's kind of like the calm before the storm,' you know? It's good to have some humor before it all hits the fan."

"It was also nice to see you and Nathan dance a little bit too," said Balfour, who plays Duke. "That was kind of cool."

"Oh, and we danced to the most amazing song. I was laughing my butt off. It's hilarious. I was like, 'Really? We're playing this right now? This is so high school reunion.' This is amazing," said Rose...

RUSH LIMBAUGH: Actor Nick Searcy of "Justified"

January 17, 2013

... RUSH: "Let me tell you, you guys are all great. I mentioned earlier that as I get older I have a greater appreciation for a lot of work that people do that, in younger days, I used to think was easy. Now, I'm just a fan. I don't know how to rate what you do professionally. All I am is a consumer. But I have to tell you that everybody that I know loves this show. You all look like you're having a ball doing it. You all look like you're really totally immersed in it, that nobody's phones it in.

I think the audience doesn't feel cheated watching this thing, and it's unique. You know, it's the kind of thing that everybody wishes they could be part of, Nick, to tell you the truth. It's that good. It's that kind of show and the guest stars you bring on, they add to it, too. So congratulations. It's a great show and it looks like you're just having a blast with it.
"

SEARCY: "Oh, we are. You know, it's been such a joy to go to work every day with these people, and Tim Olyphant is just a terrific star, and he's one of these guys that's so engaged in the material. His enthusiasm for it is infectious, and it pulls everybody in. The writers have done a wonderful, wonderful thing in allowing the actors to really massage the scenes, and the writers are always there on the set with us. So that if somebody has an idea or a change they want to make or an ad-lib they want to throw in, everybody is in on it so nobody gets mad..."

BULLET TO THE HEAD - JASON MOMOA AUDIO INTERVIEW

Richard Crouse talks to Bullet to the Head star Jason Mamoa.

A quick look at Jason Momoa's IMDB page reveals that he is best known for playing roles described as a "vengeful barbarian warrior" or a "powerful warlord." The 6' 4" actor is best known for roles in Conan the Barbarian and Game of Thrones often plays tough guys.

Next up he plays a muscle-bound mercenary Bullet to the Head, an action flick the Hollywood Reporter called "beefy, brainless fun."

Typecast, perhaps, but it did give him the chance to star with one of the master of the genre, Sylvester Stallone.

"You can't say enough good things about Stallone," says the Hawaiian-born hunk. "Truly, he is an icon. A legend, and so good at what he does."

BEING HUMAN - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: SAM WITWER AND ANNA FRICKE INTERVIEW

Q) I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about your initial reaction when you found out that basically everything about the show is being upended in the first two episodes; that the whole concept of the show- everybody sort of does become human in a way. And also if you had any concern that this might be too much of a superman-dive type of gimmick that might irritate dedicated fans?

Sam Witwer: "I really like it. I suppose the question is for me, considering Anna invented these shake-ups. I was thrilled. I thought it was really fantastic; in fact, the entire cast was really blown away with the move because you want to feel like the things that happen leave an indelible mark on the characters and on the situations, so you want the show to evolve. Sagers, you bring up the superman example, the example I would bring up would be Battlestar Galactica - that I think the best thing they did was that big shakeup going into Season 3. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it...But I think Anna and her writers did a fantastic job in creating a season that allowed us to get really deep with our characters this year. This is definitely the character season where we really get to know the characters even better than we did before in a big way."

Anna Fricke: "If I could just add to that, I think part of what we've always loved about the concept of the show is that with great pain lies great humor and it's a very human process that they're going through. And the whole concept of Being Human is that it's never going to work out for these people. So, even if we do something like shake it up as we did in the first season, something is going to go wrong there and it's never really going to work out. So I guess that’s why I always feel safe and the writers feel safe in playing within those parameters because it's not going to work out. And if it ever does work out, that's the end of the show. So, we have some room to play with..."

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... The Vampire Diaries

8-9 PM THE CW

If you were worried that The Vampire Diaries had lost its bite, rest assured: Tonight's winter premiere promises to leave a mark. Picking up with a memorial service for Tyler's (Michael Trevino) mother, the episode features the return of two Originals (sorry, Elijah isn't one of them) and finds Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan (Paul Wesley), and Caroline (Candice Accola) being held hostage at Mystic Falls High. While there are plenty of great twists (including one wholly unexpected but totally exciting new alliance) and snark (particularly between Joseph Morgan's Klaus and Ian Somerhalder's Damon), it's the big, emotional truth bombs detonated among Elena, Stefan, and Damon that will leave you reeling.

TV GUIDE: Fringe Oral History: Dual Universes Open Up a New World Of Possibility - Part Two

CLICK HERE TO READ PART ONE - Fringe Oral History Part 1: Building the world of "science fact"

In the second part of our farewell to Fringe, producers and cast discuss the introduction of the parallel universe, which opened up the world of Fox's sci-fi drama to new and exciting possibilities, including a new set of characters with names like Walternate and Bolivia that fans would — gasp! — actually come to love in the end.

TVGuide.com talked to stars John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop, Walternate), Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop), Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham, Bolivia), Jasika Nicole (Astrid Farnsworth, Kick-Astrid), Lance Reddick (Phillip Broyles, Alt-Broyles), Blair Brown (Nina Sharp, Meana), Seth Gabel (Lincoln Lee, Linc), series co-creator J.J. Abrams, executive producers J.H Wyman, Jeff Pinkner and Bryan Burk and Fox's Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly about the bumpy road to the series finale. This is the second in a four-part oral history...

... TV Guide: Most of the cast now had to portray two different versions of their character.

Pinkner: "We got to do what you never get to do in television, which was introduce new versions of our main characters. It provided fantastic acting opportunities/challenges for many of our actors. It was a great playground just for imagination."

Abrams: "We didn't quite anticipate, at the beginning, how much time we'd be spending over there. That was a really fun thing to see them pull off."

Jackson: "When we first introduced the idea, it was a germ of an idea, and I think it developed into something else going into Season 3, which is where we really started to make those jumps across. The idea was, 'Why don't we, instead of just teasing it and toying with the idea that it's there, let's just do it. Let's just go over there!'"

Torv: "That was thrilling when that whole thing happened, and when we really made the decision to go over there for a bit. It was a different show. I remember especially in Season 3 when we would go over and we'd do alternate episodes in the alternate universe and then in our world, you'd walk in and it was new sets, I love working with Seth and Kirk [Acevedo] and that whole little trio. It was like a totally different show and also a really fun energy and a fun dynamic. I would be interested to see what that show would have been like and how that would have progressed."

Noble: "We've had the opportunity to step out and literally play another character, albeit with the same subjects and the same backgrounds. I think it was an enormous gift. I think probably more striking was the difference that Anna attempted to bring to Bolivia [the writers' nickname for the alternate-universe Olivia] from Olivia. I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, that's amazing!'"

Torv: "I just loved her."

Noble: "I loved playing Walternate, and one of my favorite scenes still is when the two men were together and just talking to each other. I have a very soft spot for those scenes."

Lance Reddick: "That was exciting for me, partly because Broyles was so much more in the field of action. One of the reasons why actors are drawn to the theater is because you get to do so many different kinds of characters. One of the traps in doing film and television is playing the same thing over and over again, so the opportunity to get to play basically five or six different characters, even if it's the same person, in a series is really great."

Jasika Nicole: "I think that alt-Astrid was perceived as being so very cold because she wasn't as emotionally available as this Astrid was, but it turns out that she just has a different way of communicating how she feels. I always knew that she was a good person. She was very dedicated to her work, and she didn't have time for socializing. Whereas the Astrid over here, I think the purpose of her is to be a caring individual, somebody that the other characters could open up to at various points in the different seasons."

Brown: "Yeah. I never asked if Meana [the alternate-universe Nina, who was very mean] was good or bad. I never asked because I didn't want to know. I wanted the mystery myself, because I thought it was much easier to play. It was interesting when I played Nina when Meana was pretending to be Nina, I had to be so careful that I wasn't going to give it away, because I wanted to leave clues. And it was like, no, the point is: No one should know! So sometimes ignorance is really helpful. If you just don't know, you can't ruin it."

Pinkner: "Ultimately Josh got to play different sides of himself too, though not in the same vein as our other actors did."

Jackson: "I am my doppelgänger..." [Laughs]
