TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Once Upon a Time, Grey's, Fringe, More on Laugh Tracks and More!

... Question: Allow me to get this off my chest. I love sci-fi. I loved Farscape, Star Trek, Stargate, and have watched pretty much everything else. But I am not on the Fringe bandwagon for one simple reason: It is a parallel universe story. I don't like parallel universe stories and never have. I could barely tolerate them when it would serve as one episode on Farscape, Star Trek, Stargate, etc. Everyone has done them. I don't like them. I don't want to watch a whole series when that is the main hook. I am an original sci-fi fan; I grew up in the Golden Age — the John Campbell age — and have kept up as best I can. I know that I don't like parallel universes no matter how well they are done.
And last week's column had some interesting points about pacing. I happen to like the pacing in The Vampire Diaries. I like the way they don't drag out the secrets and for the secrets that do last a little longer — at least I know it won't last that long. Look at Ringer. It is a show I should like but it is playing out so slowly I am ready to give up on it. I have two episodes on my DVR and any time I have some free time... well, I can't bring myself to turn it on. So I get that you don't like the pacing on Vamp Diaries but it works for me. And I can get my soapy fix. — Shelley
Matt Roush: Not sure why you think I don't like the pacing on The Vampire Diaries. I wrote last week that, "I do appreciate its breakneck (often literally) pace and what-next plotting." It's the best thing about the show. Couldn't agree more that it's a lot more fun than the pokey Ringer has turned out to be. You want a show that breaks a ton of outrageous story every week? Try Revenge. Regarding your objection to Fringe and the parallel universe storyline: That's clearly your choice. We all have "deal breakers" when it comes to the kinds of stories we choose to follow, and I'm sure there are many who hate the fact that the new Star Trek movie franchise is proceeding on an "alternate timeline." I try not to set such hard and fast rules, and with Fringe, what I appreciate about the warring worlds is that the parallel universe isn't just a one-off gimmick but leads to a richer exploration of theme and character, especially where Walter and his relationship with Peter is concerned, and Walter's guilt about having caused such a cosmic mess by pursuing his personal agenda...

NCIS - DAILY REPORTER: Pauley Perrette: Proud to be a fan of the Goth go-to gal she plays on crime drama 'NCIS'
by FRAZIER MOORE
December 12, 2011
It figures that Pauley Perrette would excel playing forensic scientist Abby Sciuto, the Goth lab rat on CBS' crime procedural, "NCIS."
On the job in her high-tech lair, Abby is an information magnet and a bloodhound for clues to help crack the latest case with a link to the Navy or Marine Corps. And in the process, she's brainy, beautiful, charmingly quirky and totally gung-ho — which is to say, a lot like Pauley Perrette.
In its ninth season, "NCIS" (which airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST) remains a smash hit, averaging 20 million viewers a week. And even among its crazy-popular ensemble (including Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Sean Murray, David McCallum and Rocky Carroll), Perrette is a standout, having landed at the top of a recent Q Score roster measuring TV stars' fame and likability among viewers...
... Perrette is an unapologetic cheerleader for her show — and her character.
"I'm the biggest Abby Sciuto fan on planet Earth," she announces. "I mean, I didn't invent her. I just have the honor of playing her. She fascinates me."
For a recent interview, Perrette looks a decade younger than her 42 years, dressed in jeans and a green T-shirt that echoes her luminous green eyes. Her raven hair (dyed for the role of Abby from her natural blond) is in pigtails. If she looks short at 5 feet and 10 inches, it's because she isn't wearing Abby's towering platforms, but instead tennis shoes. She flaunts a radiant smile and a flurry of hands when she speaks — say, about the joys of acting...

STARGATE SG-1 - GATEWORLD: For Pete’s Sake - David DeLuise Interview
Sunday - December 11, 2011
by Chad Colvin
It’s now been almost eight long years since the last time GateWorld had the opportunity to catch up with actor David DeLuise. Our first chat, not long after the character he portrayed — “Pete Shanahan” — was introduced, gave us the opportunity to get to know the latest DeLuise family member to grace the Stargate franchise with their time and talent. But in the years since, many things have happened: the story arc for Shanahan followed its logical conclusion, the actor moved on to a lead role in a popular family television series, and the DeLuise family would suffer a tragic blow as they lost their endearing patriarch.
GateWorld caught up to the actor earlier this fall when he was a special guest during the Chicago edition of Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate Convention tour. With a lot of interview ground to cover between our chats, we made the most of it, as you’ll read in the transcript below. In this candid interview, David DeLuise goes on the record about Pete Shanahan’s full story arc, taking orders from his older brother [Peter] on the SG-1 set, playing a father opposite actress/singer Selena Gomez, his thoughts on Stargate Universe and the hibernation of the franchise as a whole, the legacy of his famous father, and much, much more!

... GateWorld: It has been over seven years since the last time that we caught up with you. Season Seven, I think, shortly after you were introduced, long before you knew what the arc for Pete was going to be in Season Eight. So much has happened, with your character on the show, with the franchise itself, with your family. A lot to talk about in a short period of time.
Pete’s arc — his love for, the engagement with and the ending of the relationship with Sam, against where he saw it going — do you think the way that it was portrayed onscreen was pretty honest, overall?
David DeLuise: "I think it was. I think it was good. Even if people didn’t like Pete Shanahan, I think they saw that it was a good thing for Sam to be loved. You know what I mean? If you look at her in some of those scenes, she’s giving it back, too. Isn’t that what we all ultimately want? To love and be loved. So I think those two characters were feeling that. Even if you don’t like Pete, you like Sam, you want her to be loved, right? I think that it was good.
The realistic nature of what was going on was, in my opinion, Sam had to decide whether or not she was going to be the one to move away from their [her and O'Neill's] relationship and be with someone. Because I think everybody knows that if they could have been together, they would have. In one of the futuristic flashbacks, they have everybody together — they’re fishing — and I think that put everybody’s concerns to rest about whether they ended up together or not.
I think my character served its purpose to really put Sam in the position of, “What is it that you want?” I’ve said this so many times before that Amanda [Tapping], working with Amanda, she’s the most professional, the most amazing, sexy..."
