SCIFI AND TV TALK: Sci-Fi Blast From The Past - Peter DeLuise
by Steve Eramo
05/16/2011
In today's Sci-Fi Blast From The Past, actor/writer/director/producer and all-around nice guy Peter DeLuise talks about his early days on Stargate SG-1.
Peter DeLuise directing Stargate Universe's "Darkness"
Back in the mid-eighties actor Peter DeLuise was making young girls’ hearts flutter with his performance as the hip and hunky Officer Doug Penhall on the popular television series 21 Jump Street. In between busting drug dealers, extortionists and arsonists, DeLuise also had the opportunity to direct three episodes of the program.
His work in front of and behind the cameras impressed director/producer Jonathan Glassner and producer N. John Smith, both of whom eventually ended up producing the MGM/Showtime cable science fiction series Stargate SG-1. They remembered DeLuise and hired him to direct the second season episode Serpent’s Song. Not surprisingly, they were so pleased with the end result that they asked him back to do Show and Tell and, since then, DeLuise has become one of their most prolific and respected directors. For him, it is a match made in heaven.
“I’ve always been a huge science fiction fan,” says DeLuise. “As a young child I read a lot of Robert Heinlen. I’ve seen every single episode of Star Trek, classic and contemporary, and I even played a genetically reengineered combat soldier called Dagwood on seaQuest DSV, which was tons of fun. So, naturally, when Stargate came along I was ecstatic. It’s very challenging and stimulating and, because I have a compulsive/obsessive work process, I tend to completely immerse myself in this reality. I must be doing all right because they keep giving me more work. Either that or no one else is available,” he jokes.

... Question: With the end of the Stargate franchise this week, you have to go back a couple of decades before finding a season without a serious space-themed television series. During the times of the Treks and the Gates, we also had Farscape, Babylon 5, and although I was never a fan of the Galactica reboot, I will acknowledge its existence. Anything over the horizon for us wannabe space travelers? — Deon
Matt Roush: The one I'm most excited about is Syfy's Battlestar Galactica prequel, Blood and Chrome, which goes back to the action of the first Cylon war. If you didn't embrace Galactica, though, I'm afraid it looks like pretty slim pickings, because most of the fantasy/sci-fi projects I'm aware of are relatively earthbound.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Stargate Universe's Louis Ferreira - Forever Young
By Steve Eramo
05/14/2011
This is one of a handful of unpublished interviews I still have left from my Stargate Universe set visit last July. Hope you enjoy it!
Decisions, decisions, decisions – if you happen to be lucky (or in some cases unlucky) enough to be in a leadership position, then you are faced with making decisions on a daily basis. Stargate Universe’s Colonel Everett Young knows that only too well. As commander of a group of military men and women as well as scientists and civilians, all of whom are marooned onboard the Ancients starship Destiny, he constantly makes decisions that affect his life as well as theirs.
In the Universe second season episode Deliverance, the colonel is juggling several balls, including one where the outcome will determine the future of one of his crewmates. For actor Louis Ferreira, who plays Young, this sort of personal angst is what makes working on the series and playing his character so much fun for him.
“The episode that we’re currently filming [early July 2010] is one big space battle,” reveals Ferreira, who has stepped away from the set for a chat in Universe’s publicity office on the Bridge Studios lot in Burnaby, British Columbia. “And the challenge with it, really, because I think this show is, in fact, a character drama, is bringing the history of these people to the battle. So instead of just having an episode about things blowing up, it’s one where you have all this character development running parallel to all the action, if that makes any sense,” says the actor with a smile. “That to me is what makes a good drama, where the characters get under your skin and you come to understand where they’re coming from and even what it must be like for them to confront their demons.
“And I can tell you that this season, my character hits rock bottom. It gets worse and worse for Young until he sinks right to the bottom and is challenged in such a way where he has to make some tough decisions...”

... Castle
(Monday, 10/9c, ABC)
This week is a smorgasbord of season (and in some cases, possibly series) finales, and Monday is overstuffed with them, including CBS's comedies, a Chuck wedding on NBC, a 90210 graduation on the CW, and a showdown with the legendary villain Wo Fat capping the first season of Hawaii Five-0. But the nicest surprise of this spring has been the resurgence of ABC's comedic crime procedural Castle, which wraps its season by returning to the ongoing mystery surrounding the murder of Kate Beckett's mother. When hitman Hal Lockwood (Max Martini) escapes from custody, Castle and Beckett unearth a wider conspiracy involving law enforcement. And as often happens in this type of climax, someone may die.

WORTH PLAYING: 'Red Faction: Origins' - Brian J. Smith Interview
by Adam Pavlacka on May 13, 2011
Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the brutal Earth Defense Force, harmony on Mars is again threatened but this time by a lethal force shrouded in mystery.
Produced by the SyFy channel in conjunction with THQ, "Red Faction: Origins" is a made-for-TV movie designed to bridge the narrative gap between the events of 2009's Red Faction: Guerrilla and the upcoming Red Faction: Armageddon. Set halfway between the two games, the film focuses on the character of Jake Mason (Brian J. Smith, "Stargate Universe"), a Red Faction soldier and son of Alec Mason (Robert Patrick, "Terminator 2," "X-Files"), the player character in Red Faction: Guerrilla. We spoke with Smith earlier this week, chatting about the production of "Red Faction: Origins" as well as his involvement in "Stargate Universe."
... WP: With "Red Faction: Origins," did you have a larger budget to play around with more effects, weapons and toys on the set? Or is the movie more character-focused?
BJS: Well, the movie is definitely character-focused. Really, it has to be. If you're going to take something based on a video game and turn it into two hours of television drama, it has to be about the story. It has to be about the characters.
One of the things that the video game does so well is that it literally puts you in the character's shoes and you're controlling it, taking your own risks, making your own decisions sometimes, and failing or succeeding based on your own skill level. You're much more involved. That's the fun of gaming. I'm a big gamer. I spend way too much time on my Xbox. (laughs) It's kind of embarrassing. I always play games like Elder Scrolls and Battlefield: Bad Company and Call of Duty, things like that. I'm much more of a shooter or straight fantasy kind of guy. I'd never played the Red Faction game before, so the world is a little bit new.
That being said, we live in the age of CGI right now, and you can create a whole world for not a lot of money in front of a green screen. You see shows like "Sanctuary," which is on SyFy, and that's pretty much shot in front of a green screen, and we did a lot of that for "SGU" as well. These guys are getting so good at it that you can create a whole set, a whole world for a fraction of the cost of going out on location...

During the riveting season finale, Beckett's (Stana Katic) investigation into the conspiracy linked to her mother's murder reaches a critical turning point that will expose key secrets and spill much blood. More invested in the romance between Nathan Fillion's author-sleuth and Katic's intrepid detective? Then prep for a breathtaking development — and a classic cliff-hanger. The episode teases a Derrick Storm graphic novel. Can it be for real? We need some way to kill time as we impatiently wait for season 4.
