LOS ANGELES TIMES' HERO COMPLEX: Nathan Fillion, a pop culture king beyond ‘Castle’

Nov. 08, 2011
by Geoff Boucher

If you settle for 20th century definitions, Nathan Fillion is a prime-time television star – after all, his Monday night series “Castle” is cruising through its fourth sly season on ABC with more than 13 million viewers a week. But in this pop-culture era of digital tribes it’s really not fair to limit his celebrity with that sort of remote-control thinking.

These are the days of compartmentalized fame and there are few better examples than Fillion, who is able to able to anchor a popular network series even as he puts together a dynamic resume of cult-audience projects, be they beautiful misfires (Joss Whedon’sFirefly”), bold misfits (James Gunn’sSuper”), experimental farce (Whedon’sDr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog”) or cosmic cartoons (he returns to the role of Green Lantern in the upcoming animated movie “Justice League: Doom”)...

... “When I go to a sci-fi convention, oh God, it’s the closest thing to being a rock star I will ever know in this life,” Fillion said over a coffee with an expression of rapturous deadpan. “I want to be a rock star, don’t you? It’s a good thing to be, a rock star...

Fringe season 4

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: 'Fringe' star Joshua Jackson on his big return and the timeline reboot: 'There's a huge, huge risk.'

by Jeff Jensen
Nov 4 2011

During the first three episodes of Fringe’s current season, Joshua Jackson’s Peter Bishop was a passing blip, a fleeting reflection, and a brief sound effect, sometimes all in the same episode. This is what happens when your character gets dislodged from the space-time continuum after activating a machine designed to save two parallel universes by rebooting their histories but also somehow negates your own existence...

... Jackson tells EW that he had no problem sitting on the sidelines to start the season. “It gave me an extra month and half off,” he jokes. “But I thought it was necessary. You need to give space to explore the effect Peter’s choice had. Otherwise, you make last season cliffhanger finale – which I thought was big, ballsy thing to do – not all that important...

Photobucket

... EW: There’s a curious line in tonight’s episode that presents the idea that Peter’s existence in the previous timeline was a “paradox” that never should have happened. The implication is that during the first three seasons, Fringe was presenting us with a version of history that was “wrong” and that season four gives us the “correct” version of history. It’s a provocative twist for anyone who is really invested in those first three years of the show and wants to see that timeline restored.

Joshua Jackson: "Yeah, I had never heard it phrased like that before, either, and it’s become a big topic of discussion creatively. It’s also the big theme of these Fringe comic books I’ve been writing lately, as well. Peter exemplifies the idea: “One of these things doesn’t belong.” Through no fault of his own, an original sin was committed on his behalf, and the only way to redress that original sin was to sacrifice himself so everyone else can move forward. He was the thing that had to go. So now Peter is as confused as everyone else as to A. Why he’s here? B. What this new ‘here’ is? C. What it means to be ‘here’? Because he senses that his presence is dangerous to the people around him, because he’s the thing that doesn’t belong..."

COLLIDER: Colm Meaney Talks HELL ON WHEELS, Working With Robert Pattinson in BEL AMI, and His Work on STAR TREK

by Christina Radish
November 6th, 2011

On the new AMC Western series Hell on Wheels, actor Colm Meaney plays Thomas “Doc” Durant. Based on a real life character, Durant is a rich entrepreneur taking full advantage of the changing times, as he becomes more and more concerned about his place in history.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, Colm Meaney talked about how he thought the pilot for Hell on Wheels was one of the best things he’s ever read, how good writing is very easy to learn and perform, that Durant is a man on a quest, and how show creators Joe and Tony Gayton have been a tremendous help in the research for the time period. He also talked about another historical story he’s a part of, with the drama feature Bel Ami (starring Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci), what it’s like to have been a part of Star Trek (with The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine), and why he loves returning to the theater...

... Collider: Your character has that great line in the pilot where he says, “What is drama without a villain?” Do you see Durant as a villain, or do you see him as someone who’s just greedy?

MEANEY: "I don’t see him as a villain, at all. He’s certainly not a straightforward villain. I don’t even think it’s necessarily about greed with him. Greed is there, of course, and I think he probably was a greedy businessman to begin with, but this goal is something he’s driven to do. It’s the equivalent of going to the moon in the 1860′s. He’s on a quest. It’s become more important to him than the money. You become aware of that, as time goes on. That’s the way it felt to me, even in the pilot. He realizes that he has to make money and bribe people, and there has to be all sorts of chicanery going on, in financial terms, but ultimately, it’s to achieve this goal he has, and to be the first one to do it..."

WETPAINT: Exclusive! Susan Sullivan Talks Castle Season 4 and the "Adorable" Nathan Fillion

by Ian Spiegelman
November 7, 2011

In Part 2 of our Wetpaint Entertainment interview, Susan [Sullivan] — who plays Castle’s mom Martha Rodgers on the ABC hit — tells us what the mischievous Nathan Fillion’s been up to on the set and where her character is heading this season. Plus, we do our best to convince her to get a Twitter account already!

Photobucket

... What attracts you the most about this show? Does your theater experience help or hinder you in the role of Martha?

Susan Sullivan: "I just love who this woman is. I was just in New York recently and saw Follies, which is about these older actresses going back to when they started out. And I’d like to sort of connect that part of Martha back into the show. You know, her wanting to be out there on the stage with people. I think that the blend that this show has, it has a good — as has been said ad nauseum — it has a good heart to it and I like the comedy that ripples through. I also love the fact that you can collaborate. On this “Cops & Robbers” episode, I had several lines that I pitched to the writers on the set and they put them in. Whether they’ll remain in, I don’t know.

I was on a show called The Nine, which was about [a group of former] bank hostages, and I threw into the show when I’m sitting with the hostages, and I say, “You know, I once played the part in a television show as bank hostage. That didn’t turn out well.” You’ll see if it’s there or not.

I like that about the show. It’s kind of easy. People are comfortable with themselves and each other, so it’s a very nurturing place to be as an artist...
