VANCOUVER SUN: Josh Dallas casts a spell on Once Upon a Time
By Alex Strachan
October 31, 2012
“They probably wouldn’t believe it was really me, if I went to Halloween as Prince Charming, so I think I may do exactly that,” Josh Dallas says, taking a moment to find shelter from the morning rain on the Steveston, B.C., set of Once Upon a Time. “I can see it now: ‘That’s a really good costume. You really look like that guy!’”
“That guy” is Prince James — also known as Prince Charming — in Once Upon a Time lore. He’s a poor shepherd whose twin brother was given as an heir to King George, part of a deadly deal with the ever-scheming Rumpelstiltskin. Sadly, the real Prince James is killed in battle after agreeing to slay a dragon for king and country, and it falls on Prince Charming to take his brother’s place.
Dallas is not really Prince Charming, he insists. He just plays said prince on TV.
Still, the dashing actor comes by his TV swordplay and Hamlet-inspired inner turmoil (“That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain”) honestly: Though born in Kentucky and raised in Indiana, he studied the performing arts at the Mountview Conservatoire for the Performing Arts in London, England, after being awarded the Sarah Exley scholarship, given every three years to a promising acting student from the U.S. At the callow age of 20, Dallas landed his first professional gig — with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The London stage beckoned and, after that, The Young Vic, New Shakespeare Company and the English National Opera...
Once Upon a Time airs Sundays on CTV at 7 ET/MT/PT and on ABC at 8 ET/PT.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Primeval: New World's Niall Matter - Cross Purposes
by Steve Eramo
10/30/2012
You would think after all his years of playing Zane Donovan in Eureka that actor Niall Matter would have pretty much seen it all when it comes to the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres. Well, not necessarily. In the new SPACE Channel series Primeval: New World – a spin-off of the hit UK show Primeval - his character of micro-tech genius Evan Cross heads up a team that investigates “Anomalies” or rifts in time that allow animals and people from the past as well as future access to present-day Vancouver, British Columbia.
At the same time he is dealing with this threat to humanity, Cross is also struggling with his own inner demons, including the death of his wife, as Matter explains.
“Evan Cross is, first of all, an inventor and visionary,” says the actor, who has very kindly come into the New World studios on a very rare day off to talk about his work on the show. “He’s also the leader of this team of dinosaur hunters, if you will, or should I say dinosaur wranglers who are trying to get these creatures back into the Anomalies. They’re not really looking to kill them, but, in fact, return them to their proper points in time.
“My character is very loyal and determined as well as stubborn at times and headstrong. As the [first] season of the show progresses, though, that stubbornness begins to diminish and he starts realizing that people around him are being affected by his overzealous decision to chase after these Anomalies. He chose to kind of ignore personal relationships, which we see throughout the season, and I think his eyes are beginning to open up to the fact that there’s more to life than this obsession of his..."
Primeval: New World premieres on Syfy in 2013, and premiered in Canada on the Space Channel, on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 10PM.

... FRANKENSTEIN
TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET
On Halloween night, another prime-time classic: Turner Classic Movies presents the original Frankenstein film, made in 1931 – only four years after The Jazz Singer ushered in the cinematic sound era. Maybe that’s why Boris Karloff, as Frankenstein’s monster, had so few lines of dialogue. I suspect other reasons -- and I also expect that tonight's entire TCM lineup, for Halloween fans, will be a monster hit. Also on the schedule: 1939's Son of Frankenstein at 9:30 p.m. ET, 1941's The Wolf Man at 11:15 p.m. ET, 1932's The Mummy at 12:30 a.m. ET, 1940's The Mummy's Hand at 2 a.m. ET, 1933's Island of Lost Souls at 3:15 a.m. ET and 1933's The Invisible Man at 4:30 a.m. ET.

VANCOUVER SUN: Once Upon a Time stars caught up in the magic of B.C.
Kind of like the weather, ‘it’s all around us,’ Goodwin says
By Alex Strachan
October 30, 2012
In this world and the next, weather is the great equalizer. Once Upon a Time may be a fairy tale about magic kingdoms, star-crossed damsels, charming princes, spells of enchantment and the power of imagination, but real life has a way of intruding on reel life, often at the most inopportune moments.
On this cold, dark late October morning, a lean, hard wind and sheets of driving rain knife across the Steveston, B.C., flats just as the heroes and heroines of TV’s most magic hour spill on to Moncton St. — Main Street in the present-day town of Once Upon a Time’s imaginings...
... On the first take, Ginnifer Goodwin, playing Mary Margaret — she also plays Snow White in Once Upon a Time’s fairy-tale world — is ebullient, laughing easily as she links arms with her fellow actors Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas and Jared Gilmore. On the second take, the smiles and laughter are still believable but this time, when [first-assistant director Morgan] Beggs calls, “Cut!” the group huddles together for that one moment of extra warmth before the third take. By the end of the third take, Goodwin and Morrison’s teeth are chattering as Dallas — Prince Charming in Once Upon a Time’s fairy-tale kingdom — and a pair of crew members offer blankets and heavy coats.
The episode, the ninth in Once Upon a Time’s second season as one of Sunday night’s most beloved, avidly followed and most watched primetime entertainment programs, is called Queen of Hearts, and is tentatively slated to air on Nov. 25...

10-11 PM CBS
Though the procedural jumped the shark hundreds of grisly murders ago, the ongoing traumas of the Las Vegas police department's forensics division plow forward unabated, despite the fact that Ted Danson still doesn't seem to have un-stoned himself from his Bored to Death stint. This nonspooky Halloween episode spends most of its time following Nick's (George Eads) quest to solve the murder of a canine-division member, with the fallen cop's four-legged friend as the prime suspect. There's also talk of bath salts and a steady parade of hookers, just to remind you that central Nevada is a huge bummer. Despite its by-the-numbersness, the hour scores redemption points by letting you fill in the "Dog That Understands Only French" box on your procedural bingo card.
