SANCTUARY - GLOBE AND MAIL: The Sanctuary singalong: ‘A scary Exorcist dark rock opera’
by Marsha Lederman
Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011
On the set of the made-in-B.C. series Sanctuary, the cast is doing something out of character. Prop guns and lab equipment set aside – at least temporarily – they’re trying out a new weapon in their fight: music. In a radical departure for the series, song meets science fiction in a musical episode that airs Friday.
“It wasn’t like we wrote an episode as an excuse to do music,” said series creator Damian Kindler on the Burnaby, B.C., set during a break in shooting a key scene earlier this year. “We wrote an episode that if you pulled the music out, it would still be a good episode...”
Vancouver blues icon Jim Byrnes guest stars as Magnus’s father. When he appears in the library and sings an old lullaby to his daughter (a soulful version of Byrnes’s Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid that had [Amanda] Tapping tearing up on-set), she figures out a solution to Abby’s problem.
“That addresses the theme of the deepness of memory and of that part of your brain that music and a certain sound touches,” said Byrnes, after wrapping the scene. “And the thing that it brings back, the memories it evokes, and the way it makes you do work, makes you want to do better...”

DOCTOR WHO - SFX MAGAZINE: Tom Baker Answers Your Questions!
The bits of our interview with Doctor #4 that we couldn’t fit in our new Doctor Who bookazine
November 23 2011
The brand new, 100% original content, 180-page, utterly fantastic SFX bookazine, Doctor Who: The Fanzine, is on sale NOW!
In it, we subject Tom Baker to a Fannish Inquistion, but we couldn’t quite fit the entire interview, so here are the extra, like a bonus feature on a DVD...
... What souvenirs from the programme do you have?
Callum Smith, via email
Tom: "Well, not many left, because so much was begged off me! Charities are so insatiable! But I’ve got one thing left – an engraved glass from Elisabeth Sladen from when she left in 1975 or 1976, engraved “with love from Elisabeth”.
I think in the days when I was not so happy I didn’t save much because I couldn’t see much point. I wasn’t a boy when I got that job, but I never thought I’d be 78 and in rather good health. I think that’s why in those hectic days in Soho in the 1960s and ’70s no-one thought like that, otherwise no-one would have behaved like that! And we didn’t believe in anything except hanging in together and sharing our desperation. We all chose the illusion, that life with in the Colony, that life was in the French and of course we all had very tragic domestic situations. There were broken hearts or abandoned partners or betrayals because that kind of behaviour led to outrageous recklessness. Weird days..."

STAR TREK - SCIENCE CHANNEL VIDEO: 'Trek Nation' Sneak Peek Airs Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 8/7C
Science celebrates the 45th anniversary of one of the greatest television franchises of all time, Star Trek, with the world premiere two-hour event, Trek Nation. This tribute follows Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod, as he explores the deep impact of his father's singular vision for the future. Through interviews with fans, including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane, and many notable Star Trek alums, Trek Nation chronicles a son's journey to discover his father's work that helped defined science fiction.
Trek Nation draws on hours of exclusive footage, including never-before-seen home movies from the Roddenberry family collection and the first-ever Star Trek convention. This film demonstrates that Roddenberry's work has not only inspired legions of fans across the globe, but generated a cultural movement. Star Trek is a phenomenon that goes beyond entertainment; it has influenced politics, space travel, social morality and much more. Star Trek was a catalyst which has fostered an enhanced understanding of the human condition, capturing man's constant search for a better world.
"Gene Roddenberry is the original thought-provocateur; the rebel-genius who was not afraid to push the boundaries of what science can accomplish," said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vice president of Science. "Star Trek used science fiction to hold a mirror to society, leveraging its storylines as a platform for social commentary touching on topics such as racism, sexism, the economy, war, peace and religion. Working with Rod, and showing footage never shared on television is what makes Trek Nation truly inspiring."
"I am so glad Trek Nation found its home at Science," says Rod Roddenberry, Executive producer of Trek Nation and son of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. "They understood that, as personal as the film was for me, Trek Nation is really a universal story of a son coming to understand his father. The experience allowed me to learn more about the man behind this incredible science fiction phenomenon as well as the man I knew as 'Dad.' I think it's something that Star Trek fans and those less familiar with the franchise will enjoy."
Star Trek was a revolution that would define an era. When it first premiered on NBC in 1966, it often was described as a western set in space. However, the series provided a much deeper commentary that created a devoted and loyal fan base which continues to grow, even today. With a then-virtually-unknown cast, each week Roddenberry told tales of humans and aliens who lived side by side and served the Starfleet, the peacekeeping armada of the universe.

SANCTUARY - SCIFI DINER CLASSIC: Ep. 8 – Our Interview with Christopher Heyerdahl (Sanctuary, Stargate, Supernatural, Smallville, Twilight, and Caprica)
In our eighth episode of the SciFi Diner Classic, we interview Christopher Heyerdahl from Sanctuary, Stargate, Supernatural, Smallville, Twilight, and Caprica. Since we do a news and interview show, it goes without saying that the news portion of our episodes often date themselves fast. And while the interviews with the people that make Science Fiction happen remain relevant and in our opinion important, most listeners will not listen back 100 episodes and wade through old news just to get to the interview. So what the SciFi Diner Classic aims to do is to share these interviews with you. If you have been with us from the beginning, then bear with us as we introduce some of our newer listeners to voices from the past. We’re bringing you just the interview and nothing else.
