SCIFI AND TV TALK: Tom Hopper, Rupert Young, Eoin Macken & Adetomiwa Edun - Q & A with Merlin's Knights of the Round Table

01/31/2012
by Steven Eramo

In Arthurian legend, the Knights of the Round Table were among King Arthur’s most trusted and noblest of soldiers. Courageous, loyal and of good humor, they fought beside their king whenever duty called and did not hesitate to undertake the most dangerous of missions with him in the name of Camelot.

The same is true in the BBC’s hit fantasy series Merlin. At the end of the show’s third season, the-then Prince Arthur had not only his personal servant – and unbeknownst to him, sorcerer – Merlin fighting by his side against the dark forces controlled by Morgana, but also the newly formed Knights of the Round Table...

... Last week, after finishing a London TV interview and before leaving for an awards ceremony, actors Rupert Young (Sir Leon), Tom Hopper (Sir Percival), Eoin Macken (Sir Gwaine) and Adetomiwa Edun (Sir Elyan) spoke on the phone with me as well as other journalists about working on Merlin. The following is an edited version of our Q & A...

... Q: And for each of you, what was your favorite scene to do?

Eoin Macken: "My favorite scene personally is one between me and Rupert. We have a really great scene coming up in, I think, episode seven or eight. It’s an episode that mainly focuses on the knights, so I'm sure the fans will look out for that one because we're pretty brilliant in it. The scene was quite interesting because there’s a lot more conflict among the knights in terms of creating a different dynamic to our relationship. So I enjoyed that scene with Rupert in the forest which got quite heated."

Adetomiwa Edun: "Tom and I did a little bit in the season opener where we’re rescuing the children from the Dorocha, which was quite fun. And then following on from what Eoin said, I think that, if I may call it the knights' episode, has some really nice interplay between us all four of us, which was a lot of fun to do."

Tom Hopper: "Certainly my favorite has to be saving the kids with Adetomiwa in this season’s opener. That was a lot of fun. And saying again, I think the knights' episode, which is, I believe, episode eight, was a lot of fun for the four of us to do, and we also got a peek at or hint of something to come."

Rupert Young: "Mine is the same as everyone else’s, the knights’ episode. I think our characters developed a bit more in that one with the conflicts, as Eoin, said, and it was the most fun to shoot..."

NERDZILLA: Mark Sheppard is not such a badass

02/02/2012
by Joel Rheinberger

Mark Sheppard has been described as the ultimate sci-fi badass, though he doesn't necessarily agree with that.

He thinks that though his characters may be tough, they're not evil. And if you look at the world from their point of view, you'll find they're actually not bad people at all.

Excuses excuses!

Mark is in Australia to host the MSO's Dr Who Symphonic Spectacular, but he took half an hour to sit down with Nerdzilla and look over his career.

The joy of it was that he's the biggest nerd you're ever likely to meet - you mention a bit of Star Trek, and he can name the exact episode you're talking about.

A shorter edit of this interview appeared on the Nerdzilla podcast. Here's the full rambling version. Enjoy!

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: 'NCIS' reaches 200 episodes

Wednesday, 01 February 2012
Written by Rob Owen

CBS’s “NCIS” remains the No. 1 scripted drama this season and next week it hits the 200-episode mark, quite an achievement for a series that didn’t become an indisputable hit until about five years into its current nine-season run.

Generally TV shows are either successful out of the gate or grow into hits over the course of a season or two. Five years to become a hit? That’s not the norm.

At a CBS press conference last month, “NCIS” star Mark Harmon attributed the show’s ratings improvement so late in life to multiple factors.

From the very beginning, we were a show that wasn't good enough to get all that noticed and wasn't bad enough to get canceled,” he said. “And we had a lot of time just to get to know each other and just to do this show and just to work on the foundation of what this show started as. And we've had changes along the way that have, in my opinion, greatly influenced us...

NCIS cast includes Brian Dietzen, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo, Rocky Carroll, Mark Harmon, David McCallum, Pauley Perrette and Michael Weatherly

... The series’ 200th episode (8 p.m. Tuesday, CBS) will also seek to treat long-time fans with past guest stars returning as Gibbs (Harmon) sees his life flash before his eyes when a gunman shows up at a diner while Gibbs has his morning coffee.

There's a certain element to the season that's been about decisions that our characters have faced and decisions moving forward and decisions looking back,” said “NCIS” executive producer Gary Glasberg. “As far back as last summer, I sort of had a sense of what I wanted the episode to be. And it starts with a pivotal moment for Gibbs that he faces. … It literally looks back at key moments throughout nine years of ‘NCIS’ where decisions have had to be made and, had people gone one direction instead of another, how the world would have ended up. And it brings back familiar faces, old faces, faces fans don't think that they'd see again...

NEW YORK POST: 'Lost Girl' star Anna Silk on being Bo: a Q&A

January 31, 2012
by MAXINE SHEN

If you've had it up to HERE with vampires, werewolves and zombies on TV, allow us to recommend "Lost Girl," Syfy's recently premiered series about fairies - as in the fair folk, fey/fae, the seelie/unseelie, sidhe etc. Specifically, we're talking about a succubus named Bo (Anna Silk), who feeds off sexual energy and runs a sort of fae private eye service. There's fighting, wise cracks, beasties of all fantastical manner, a love triangle involving wolf shapeshifter Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) and human doctor Lauren (Zoie Palmer) and it's all topped off with some pretty racy bedroom romps. (Seriously, Syfy's put just about every warning in existence on the show.)

We grabbed a few minutes on the phone with series star Anna Silk right before she wrapped photography on Season 2 - a third one has already been ordered - in Toronto, to chat about her personal succubus experience, being in her birthday suit, "Lost Girl" drinking games, those fun fight sequences and who Bo should end up with, the human or the wolf...

Anna Silk Wallpaper

...The Post: So, how much of this fae folklore did you know before getting cast?

Anna Silk: "I knew what a succubus was. The reason I knew is because - this sounds like I’m making this story up, but it actually is true - I used to have this recurring nightmare all through high school…It was like this feeling of something sitting on my chest in the night. It paralyzed me, it was scary because it was a nightmare that happens in real time - you’re dreaming that you’re lying in bed, which is exactly what you’re doing. My mom was on an airplane, reading a magazine and in it there was an article called “The Incubus/Succubus Phenomenon” about nightmares and she ripped out the article and brought it home to me. I was like, “Oh my God! That’s what happening to me!” The nightmares have gone away, thankfully.

As far as the rest of the folklore, I had a book, as a kid, called “Fairies.” It was a beautifully illustrated book and it was really kind of dark and sinister, so I remember from a young age being exposed to those kinds of images about fairies…I didn’t really know the history behind it and that’s something that I’ve really learned from the show...

ACCESS HOLLYWOOD: Countdown To ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 2: Q&A Liam Cunningham Talks Davos Seaworth

February 1, 2012
by Jolie Lash

It’s a brisk Friday evening in Dublin, Ireland and the temperature is threatening to dip into the 30s, but “Game of Thrones” newcomer Liam Cunningham is running hot...

... In just two months from today – on April 1 — HBO’s triumphantly successful series, “Game of Thrones,” based on the books by George R. R. Martin, finally returns to the small screen. And, although he made a stamp on the 2011 stateside cable scene as a desperate father (Starz’s “Camelot”), a terrorist (“Strike Back” on Cinemax) and a new-planet-colonizing president (BBC America’s “Outcasts”), 2012 brings a new era for the Irishman as Liam enters the fight for the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros as Davos Seaworth, right hand man to
Robert Baratheon’s brother, the much-talked about, and soon to be unveiled, Stannis...

Photobucket

... AccessHollywood.com: At Comic-Con, show bosses D.B. Weiss and David Benioff told me that despite looking not a whole heck of a lot like Davos as he’s been written, they felt you’d be ‘incredible’ in this role. What do you think won them over in the audition?

Liam Cunningham: "Well, we have a tiny bit of history because I met them for the original series, but things didn’t work out with timing and various bits and pieces, and they said, ‘Look just please, please, please come back next year… So this character came up. He’s warm, and he’s got a humanity and a loyalty about him. Because I came to acting quite late, I kind of think one of the few attributes that I do have is that I try to be honest with the character, with the writing. I’m not a tricks-y actor, I’m not exactly a scenery chewing kind of actor. I try to bring an honesty to the portrayals that I’m doing and Davos Seaworth — he’s famed for his honesty, and famed for his loyalty and he has a decency about him. Maybe I fell into that category..."

VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL: Navigating Random Acts of Romance

Wednesday February 1st 2012

Writing for Film & Television grads Kevin McComiskie and Jillian Mannion will soon have what every hardworking screenwriter wants – a first feature film credit.

After years of collaborating from their native UK with Vancouver-based director Katrin Bowen, their screenplay for Random Acts of Romance is finally seeing the green lights of production. Shooting began yesterday not far from VFS.

It’s not the first time Bowen has worked with Writing grads on a feature; her 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) debut, Amazon Falls, was penned by VFS grad Curry Hitchborn. She and Kevin also collaborated on the award-winning Port Short called I, Stalker during his year at VFS.

With their first film featuring award-winning actors Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary), Zak Santiago (Shooter), and Sonja Bennett (Elegy), Kevin and Jillian are excited to see their work hit the big screen soon – especially considering the epic journey they underwent to get to this point...

... Q: Could you tell us what is the film is all about?

Jillian: "Random Acts of Romance is a comedy/drama about the transience of relationships and how couples get together then fall apart. It takes quite a cynical view of love and infatuation, but also looks at the comic absurdity in some relationships. Each couple, and each character, has their own set of problems which damages their love lives."

Kevin: "There’s also a lot of humour added to the mix as not to make the film come across all Blue Valentine. (Great film, just not the laugh-a-minute I wanted it to be!) The story itself deals with two couples and three singletons whose lives all intersect as they live up to the realization that love and happiness is not an easy road. The film is a cynical take on relationships but it is also very truthful about the realities of love. We tried hard to move away from the black and white conventions of the romantic comedy genre and instead spent time addressing the intriguing “grey area” where the lines are blurred on what is acceptable and what is normal when it comes to the pursuit of the opposite sex..."
