TV GUIDE: The Guide to Monday TV: The Closer, The Grinch, Terra Nova and More!

Nov 28, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Fox's Terra Nova (8/7c) finally revealed some juicy intel in last week's above-par episode, if we can believe Commander Taylor's story about his estranged son Lucas developing a two-way portal that would allow the Earth of 2149 to denude Terra Nova of its natural bounty. Hoping the momentum continues this week, as Taylor and Mira (the Amazonian Sixers leader) have a confrontation in the jungle that is interrupted by a dangerous prehistoric creature, while Jim continues to pursue the mole while Terra Nova goes on lockdown. Of course, there's always the "awww" factor to gum up the works, as precious little Zoe is forced to make a tough decision about her stewardship of the fast-growing baby Ankylosaur she's been raising. (In Terra Nova, being cute enough to eat might just backfire. We can hope.)

by Matt Roush

Taking advantage of the networks' post-sweeps lull, TNT roars back in a big way this week, with tonight's winter return (for five episodes) of its two biggest hits, The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles...

The Closer (8/7c) and Rizzoli (9/8c) each have similar starting points for this week's cases — the violent murder of an inner-city leader — but how they go about handling the story is an object lesson on why one show remains such potent entertainment midway through its final season and why the other is such a cartoonish bad joke.

On an unsettlingly topical episode of The Closer, the fatal shooting of a high-school principal leads Brenda and her Major Crimes team to investigate the school's long-time coach (ER's Michael Beach), whose career is in jeopardy after it's discovered he has taken an unusually personal interest in the lives of some of his more disadvantaged players. Is he a predatory monster or a selfless humanitarian? Either way, he hasn't followed the rules. And as he tells Brenda (the canny Kyra Sedgwick) in an interrogation, "Do you know what it's like to have someone staring over your shoulder day and night, looking for that one thing that could get you fired?" As a matter of fact, Brenda does. This entire case unfolds with Capt. Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) watching everyone on the team like a hawk, keeping strict records and taking a rigid by-the-book approach while the federal lawsuit against Brenda & Co. is pending. Brenda isn't happy, and Sharon is just as displeased to be playing "hall monitor," but they have one goal in common: flushing out the leak in the department.

NEVERLAND - TEEN TELEVISION: "Neverland's" New Peter Pan

By Lynn Barker
November 28, 201

TeenTV is talking with cute Brit Charlie Rowe, 15, (The Golden Compass and Pirate Radio) who plays Peter Pan in “Neverland”, the SyFy Channel’s two-part movie airing on Sunday, Dec. 4 and Monday, Dec.5. The story is sort of a prequel to the famous J.M. Barrie novel and movies you might have seen.

Story goes: Peter (Charlie Rowe) is a down on his luck pickpocket whose gang leader is Jimmy Hook. The gang steals a magical orb which transports them to the beautiful world of Neverland where a ruling colony of tree spirits is headed by Tinker Bell (the voice of Kiera Knightley). Also there, among others snatched from their own times, is tough pirate chick Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) who is searching, like Jack Sparrow in the last “Pirates” movie, for eternal youth. The gang struggles to save Neverland. Do they leave or stay forever?

Photobucket

... TeenTV: We know Peter Pan “flies”. Can you talk about the stunts you did for that?

Charlie: "Well, I don’t think it was hard. I was just in complete heaven. I was jumping around with swords, sword fighting with Rhys [who plays Hook] and Anna Friel and it was strange and obviously the flying was absolutely amazing being hauled up and down in this cold warehouse. It was spectacular although it does hurt [being hoisted up in a harness]. I really do not recommend it.

We often spent a long time trying to perfect just the movement of the flying. Just the fact that getting the right pose when you jump off and getting the right posture while you’re flying and not trying to look like you’re in serious pain which you were 24/7...

Neverland Dec 4

MANIA: TV Wasteland: Before the Boys Were Lost

By Rob Vaux
November 28, 2011

Syfy does rather well for itself when it re-tasks or reinterprets popular favorites. They scored big ratings for Tin Man and Alice, and despite a few rocky elements, those efforts succeeded in finding new wrinkles to their timeworn stories. Syfy is attempting it again with Neverland – set to premiere this Sunday – and it may be on stronger dramatic ground than ever before.

The basic idea holds great potential, charting how Peter Pan first came to Neverland and the origins of his conflict with Captain Hook. He begins life as a London street urchin before finding himself in Neverland: a place where he can never age and which will provide him the childhood his mortal life presumably denied him. We learn more about peripheral figures like Tiger Lilly and the Lost Boys in the process, as well as meeting Hook’s paramour Elizabeth Bonny (a relation to Anne?), who turns him into a bloodthirsty buccaneer.

The cast gives further cause for hope. Keira Knightley plays Tinkerbell and future Spidey villain Rhys Ifans portrays Hook. Perhaps most promising, Bob Hoskins returns as Smee: a role he originated with Steven Spielberg’s Hook and which he used to absolutely steal the show on that otherwise misbegotten production. None of them can guarantee quality, of course – and this is Syfy we’re talking about, so there’s always the chance of a massive screw-up – but the names are much more high-profile than we could have imagined, and with some good screenwriting, Neverland could easily become a grade-A winner. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and tune in Sunday, December 4 at 9:00 PM EST, when it premieres on Syfy. The conclusion runs Monday the 5th...
