... Q) How did you come up with the concept of Ghost Shark?

Griff Furst: "Before we actually settled on the story that you have seen, there were three very, very different ideas for it. So, we knew what we wanted the villain to be when we first came up with the idea, but we weren’t too sure about the story. So, we worked together with Syfy for probably about six months just on the treatment phase and came up with three different stories. And finally the third one, the guys at Syfy thought we nailed it, and we proceeded with the screenplay from there. So, it was a bit of a lengthy process, but it was definitely for the best because the stories were very, very different before we actually nailed the right one. So, it was just a little bit of trial and error, and they were all good stories, but finding the one that was perfect took a little doing."


Q) And what was the snake story that you or Richard mentioned earlier?

Griff Furst: "Oh, that was just the actual shooting conditions."

Richard Moll: "That or a small alligator. I don’t think it was a bad as we like to paint it. We like to get melodramatic about things, but there were a few swampy areas and you wanted to be careful where you’re planting you feet, but when you’ re going at a dead run through the swamp, it’s hard to make those choices sometimes at midnight. But anyway, it was fun. In the film, when you hear a character say, “Watch out for snakes,” that was kind of our inside joke because the place was filled with snakes. So, we shot about two weeks after Hurricane Isaac came through and it brought a lot of water inland and made our beaches a little more swampy than we had hoped, and the water moccasins were quite fond of our set. So, we had people in boots with rakes and shovels trying to scare snakes away as best they can, but yes, we were dealing with a lot of snakes on the set..."

Jennifer Ferrin, who plays Louise Ellison on AMC’s Hell on Wheels, talks about her character’s connection to Amelia Earhart and the challenges of riding a horse while wearing a corset...




... Q: Did you get any tips from cast members on how best to deal with “roughing it” on the set?

Jennifer Ferrin: "Anson’s [Mount] first email to me was: “Be prepared for anything,” meaning weather-wise. It could literally be 80 degrees in the morning and 40 at night and it could snow or rain at any point… But shooting exterior is amazing in so many ways. I mean, you have this natural, beautiful landscape that you get to work with that’s so dynamic. The challenge becomes that it’s a time when electricity didn’t exist, so you’re dealing with candlelight, sunlight, and moonlight, but we have the most incredible Director of Photography, Marvin Rush, that I’ve ever worked with. He’s the most incredible DP on this planet."


Q: What’s it been like wearing the big, heavy period costumes?

Jennifer Ferrin: "That was definitely an adjustment. I haven’t worn a corset since drama school, and I definitely had never worn a corset while riding a horse. The layers upon and layers were great when it was cold, and a little less comfortable now that it’s gotten warm..."

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES' SHOW TRACKER: Review: In Syfy's 'Ghost Shark,' it's hard to fault ... the shark

As the first shark-themed SyFy TV movie since “Sharknado,” which swallowed social media (and consequently the “actual” media) whole last month, “Ghost Shark,” which premieres Thursday, is automatic big news. There is nothing I can do about it.

I am, I confess, one of the more than 300 million Americans who somehow managed to miss “Sharknado” over its multiple airings and am therefore unable to compare the two, except to say that the reported “scientific” ridiculousness of “Sharknado” sounds more fun than the standard supernatural ridiculousness of “Ghost Shark,” which I have experienced for myself.

Our premise: A couple of uncouth yahoos you will not miss are out late at night, trying to win a fishing contest off the shore of a Southern harbor town called, almost unavoidably, Smallport. When a big shark makes a meal of their potentially prize-winning catch, they shoot it with a pistol and then with a crossbow, pour hot sauce into its mouth and lob in a grenade as a kind of after-dinner mint.

Somehow the shark manages to last long enough to swim into a magical cave, where it dies and immediately transforms into an indiscriminately vengeful ghost shark (blue, glowing, translucent) that can materialize wherever water is present: a puddle, a pool, a water cooler. Mayhem ensues. Also bikinis...

Abrams and calls her character Valerie "the most challenging role I've ever played." It sounds like the pilot episode has been pretty well-received by the fans who have had the chance to see it. It was definitely one of my favorite fall pilots!

This was the first time for many of the actors to visit Buffalo. Hundreds of fans lined up to get autographs among the festivities.

Early in the first season of Saturday Night Live, the very same year that Jaws had spooked moviegoers all summer, Chevy Chase got lots of laughs by dressing up as a “land shark” and preying on victims by ringing their apartment doorbells and gaining access under false pretenses (“Candygram!”). Now Syfy, continuing its run of intentionally absurd creature-feature telemovies, presents Ghost Shark, about a killer shark that’s not only dead, but able to surface wherever there’s water. (The best reason ever for keeping the toilet seat lid down.) Recommended only as a so-bad-it's-still-bad type of entertainment.

The 7-year-old daughter of a Syfy exec reportedly inspired the idea for the network's latest proudly awful homage, and it only seems like she also wrote the script and directed the actors. A translucent shark rises from the dead and takes vengeance on a coastal community with a dark colonial history. Since the great white ghost can appear in any pocket of water — pool, toilet, rain — the only fun is seeing just how far the premise can be stretched. Richard Moll (Night Court) plays the batty lighthouse keeper who knows the town's secret, and a bunch of teens try to solve the Scooby-Doo-like mystery. It's dreadful. Be sure to tweet about it.
