Stargate Universe - TV Squad: David Hewlett Interview

TV SQUAD: David Hewlett on 'Stargate Universe' and the Future of the Sci-Fi Franchise
by Mike Moody, posted Apr 4th 2011
Smart, geeky, passionate and verbose -- not only could that description suit 'Stargate Atlantis''s science wiz Rodney McKay, it also fits the actor who played him, nerd-for-hire David Hewlett.
Two years after viewers waved goodbye to McKay and Hewlett in the 'Atlantis' series finale, the fan-friendly genre actor is resurrecting his most famous role tonight with a guest spot on Syfy's 'Stargate Universe' (Mon., April 4, 10PM ET).
We got a chance to chat with Hewlett about bringing McKay back to 'Stargate,' a franchise that's in danger of disappearing from the TV landscape after the recent cancellation of 'SGU.'
Hewlett, who blogs about his work and life for Syfy's Blastr site, offered his thoughts about the future of 'Stargate' and what it was like playing McKay on 'SGU,' a show he said exists in "a different world when compared to the other 'Stargate's." The actor also briefed us on the status of his in-the-works pet TV project, 'Starcrossed,' which he described as 'Galaxy Quest' meets '30 Rock...'
Stargate Atlantis' Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett)
... TV Squad: In your first blog for Blastr, you wrote that you were "Stargate's biggest fan for life." It must have been pretty easy for you to say yes when the 'SGU' producers asked you to bring back McKay for a guest-starring role.
David Hewlett: "Yeah, that's it. I had so much fun [playing McKay]. I always felt sorry for everyone else on the show ['Stargate Atlantis']. I would say, "Well I got the best character!" I think the writers enjoyed writing McKay, and you could tell. And the issue with 'SGU' is that it was such a different world when compared to the other 'Stargates.' I could bounce back and forth between 'SG-1' and 'SGA,' but 'SGU' was a very different world. I was obviously concerned that, you know, you didn't want McKay to show up and not be McKay unless there was a good reason for that. I think, as ['SGU' co-creator] Brad [Wright] said when I got there, was that he was happy that he could sort of bridge those worlds without really breaking the rules of either of them, which I think was an important thing.
It's so difficult, because McKay wouldn't survive in an 'SGU' world, for the most part. I mean, he'd be killed, basically! And I know Brad said he had a hard time trying to figure out how to bring McKay back, but I'm really glad he did, and it's too bad that the show's not going to continue, but I wasn't gonna be turning that down in a hurry..."

Whoop-dee-doo! Surely by now you've heard the buzz over Margo Martindale's scene-stealing magnificence as frumpy backwoods crime priestess Mags Bennett, who with her unruly brood of weed-peddling bad boys is currently tangling with a sleek princess from the coal company that's trying to buy its way into strip-mining the mountains of Mags' beloved holler. This week, in the finest hour yet for this wonderfully entertaining Kentucky-fried drama, Mags brings the community together for a "whoop-dee-doo" at her place, where all manner of dirty business goes down. Martindale's range is astonishing, whether she's singing "High on the Mountain" in a moment of jubilation or staring into the face of her family's darkest deeds. This is as good as it gets.

COLLIDER: Joseph Fiennes, Tamsin Egerton & Exec. Producer Chris Chibnall Interview CAMELOT
by Christina Radish
Posted:April 1st, 2011
The highly anticipated Starz original series Camelot is a dark and compelling new take on the familiar legend. It redefines the classic medieval tale of King Arthur in a 10 episode first season that is set in the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, when chaos is threatening to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) has visions of a dark future, he turns to the young and impetuous Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), King Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan (Eva Green) will fight him for power, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control. In these dark times, with Guinevere (Tamsin Egerton) being his only shining light, Arthur will face profound moral decisions while he attempts to unite a kingdom that is broken by war and steeped in deception.
During a recent interview, co-stars Joseph Fiennes and Tamsin Egerton, along with executive producer/writer/showrunner Chris Chibnall, talked about the contemporary appeal of this classic story, putting their own twist on these dark legends, having an ensemble of this caliber bringing these characters to life, and using Season 1 to really set the foundations for the familiar story and characters and illustrate their passion, both personal and political...
... Question: Joseph and Tamsin, as actors, why did you want to take on this project?
JOSEPH FIENNES: I was tricked. Chris told me that I’d be up for Guinevere. No. It was very exciting to turn the myths upside down and to get to the legend in a visceral, modern way. It’s told in a wonderful, cinematic way. It’s a great team of actors. We know about the Sword in the Stone and the Lady in the Lake, but it’s great to visit those myths in a really exciting way. That’s what drew me in.
TAMSIN EGERTON: I was very aware of the legend, from such an early age. Being a Brit, you are so aware of King Arthur, Camelot, Guinevere and Morgan, the witch. Merlin is this mad magician who’s cloaked in mystery. It has that mystery about it. And, it’s a lead role for a woman that’s strong and has a real journey to take. She has some fantastic storylines and really grows up, in the first season. You can see her journey. It was a gift to have such an interesting and strong female role to play. That’s really why I wanted to do it. I wanted to be a part of this generation’s telling of Camelot, and also get the chance to play a fantastic, complex, interesting, emotionally passionate, young lead role...

DEN OF GEEK: Jason Momoa interview: Game Of Thrones, playing Conan and more
In the run-up to the release of epic fantasy series, Game Of Thrones, we met actor Jason Momoa to talk about his character, and what we can expect from the forthcoming Conan movie...
by Ryan Lambie
April 4, 2011
Game Of Thrones may be a sprawling fantasy drama filled with an entire planet full of characters to try to remember, but one figure stands out above all others, such is his imposing, shadowy aura. We're referring to Jason Momoa's turn as the hulking warrior, Khal Drogo, a barbaric warlord who, despite the fact that he speaks in an unintelligible language, quickly becomes one of the show's most memorable characters.
Momoa's also bringing his elemental presence to the role of Conan the Barbarian, which is set to arrive this summer, and we were excited to be given the opportunity to sit down for a round table interview with the actor to discuss his roles as both Drogo and the similarly macho Conan...
... Were you approached for Game Of Thrones, or did you audition?
JM: "I auditioned. It took, like, seven months. I did an audition, and I thought I did it pretty well, but I didn't hear anything for six or seven months, I think. It went on forever. I think what booked the job, apart from being absolutely fantastic and a great actor (I'm just joking) is that I went in and did the Haka. Do you know what that is? It's a war chant.
I just thought, in the scenes I was doing, you don't get a sense of what this warrior's like. What it would be like if he was commanding his officers, or what he'd be like in battle? I wanted to represent that, and channel a little bit of my ancestry and heritage. I'm half Hawaiian.
I went into HBO and I said, "Don't be scared or anything, but when you're in front of a large man doing the Haka, you're going to feel it. You're going to feel some energy coming at you."
These two little white women were like, "Holy shit." People were coming out of their doors and wondering what was going on. It really sealed the deal. And it got me Conan. It's a great way to start an audition. My heart was racing, and I'm sure theirs were too..."
... How did working on Game Of Thrones compare to Stargate?
JM: "Well, there were no horses and I got to wear clothes, for one thing. [laughs] I loved Stargate. I had such a great time and it was such a great training ground. It set me up to play the lead of a movie, you know, so it's really a phenomenon for four years to be with a family and experiment.
You do a movie, you meet everyone, you go from place to place. It's like joining a circus. Being on a show for four years, you know everyone. You know the grips. You feel safe and comfortable. You can play with your character a lot. It evolves over a long period of time. It was a great training ground that set me up for Drogo and Conan.
And also, being in that sci-fi fantasy genre, there's no limitations to what you can do. If I'm sick or drugged out, I can play it like heroin times ten, or crack times 20. You can go to places that aren't realistic, and that's fun.
It's worked out that I'm in these genres and I don't mind it. It's fun..."

Camelot
(Friday, 10/9c, Starz)
No two versions of the King Arthur myth are exactly alike, and significant liberties have been taken here, including a fresh twist to the sword in the stone (here a waterfall) incident. But rarely has the story been rendered so dreary and insipid.
Starz seems to believe that gratuitous nudity — look, it's a dream vision of Guinevere, naked on the beach! — are enough to provide an "adult" pay-cable edge. Actual flesh and blood characters would be more appreciated.
Instead, we get a pallid Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower, Caius in the Twilight movies) played as a randy, earnest adolescent, an accidental king whose heart is in the right place but who keeps sticking his sword in all the wrong ones. He takes marching orders from a muddled Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) who's all glower and no power. As usual, the villain gets the juiciest moments, and while Eva Green does little more than flash her eyes as Arthur's sorceress half-sister Morgan, she at least seems to be enjoying herself.
You begin to wonder if they decided not to name Arthur's sword Excalibur this time (at least not in the first three episodes) because it might remind us of John Boorman's dazzling 1981 movie — which introduced me as a college undergrad to the delights of Helen Mirren as an alluring Morgana. This Camelot only tends to make me yawn a lot. Doubt that was the intention.

... Castle
10:01 PM, ABC
Castle and Beckett (Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic) investigate the death of a man whose body was found inside a pizza oven. He turns out to be a reporter who did a story about "pizza wars"; did that make someone angry enough to kill him, or did the killer have a more sinister motive? Ruben Santiago-Hudson also stars in the new episode -- wait for it -- "Slice of Death."

... Chaos
(Friday, 8/7c, CBS)
The title of this muddled "comedic drama" (CBS's words) refers to the Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services division of the CIA, where a rogue team known as the Office of Disruptive Services (ODS) operates. Never mind the alphabet soup. The real chaos here is a collision of tones. Chaos looks like The Unit — a solid action drama CBS canceled too soon, in part because it wasn't produced in-house — but it feels more like a Chuck wannabe in its focus on Rick Martinez, a frantic, haplessly naïve newbie (Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodriguez) who's in over his head as he confronts the absurdities within an agency where, quoting a veteran agent, "Inaction has become the battle cry."
I give any CBS show credit that tries to be a bit different, that aims a little higher or more off-kilter than Criminal Minds: Disgusting Behavior. But this one pushes the zany aspects too hard, trivializing the missions while neglecting such elements as grit, wit and heart. The cast is appealing enough, starting with the eternally boyish Rodriguez, whose first meeting with the gruff penny-pinching boss (a typecast Kurtwood Smith) turns him into an unwilling mole forced to spy on his fellow agents: Without a Trace's Eric Close as a cynical drone, James Murray as a cocky Scot and Tim Blake Nelson as a seemingly milquetoast veteran who, when pressed, can unleash "human weapon" qualities. (Is he their Intersect?)
The Chaos pilot is a bit overstuffed with predictable reversals, in which every time Rick tries to see his new team in a positive light — "You're not bad for the sake of being bad; you're bad for the sake of doing good!" — he's obviously headed for a fall. Once they get to know each other, and we get to know them, maybe the show will become as funny as it thinks it is or as exciting as we might like it to be. Right now, it only makes me miss The Unit.

It seems like with so many crime procedurals on TV, they have to keep coming up with more and more bizarre ways to kill people just to keep things fresh. Case in point: tonight's episode of "Castle," in which Castle and Beckett investigate the death of a man found in a pizza oven. Guess he asked for extra-crispy, huh?
