MEDIA BLVD: Xander Berkeley Talks About His Time on 'Being Human'
Monday, 08 April 2013
By Kenn Gold
With more than 200 entries in his IMDB profile, Xander Berkely is a well recognized actor. With entries ranging from Sid and Nancy, to Terminator 2, and with considerable voice over work for animation, Xander has had a long and checkered career. This year he took on the role of Liam, a genetic pure bred werewolf looking for his lost children, and ultimately seeking revenge on the main characters of SyFy’s hit series Being Human. Xander joined MediaBlvd for an exclusive talk about his career and how he took on the character of Liam. The season finale airs tonight, Monday, April 8 on SyFy...
(Xander Berkely and Kristen Hager)
... MediaBlvd> For a show like Being Human, how do you prepare for something that you haven’t seen much or at all, and you’re coming in playing a werewolf?
Xander Berkely: It’s an interesting challenge because the guy isn’t a werewolf one day of the month and then a human the other 29 or 30 days a month like some of the other characters in the show. He’s somebody who is more wolf 99% of the time, like 29 days out of the month he’s wolf. But he still fits into the human world but not that much because he lives off in this isolated place and doesn’t have much contact with people. So the opportunity to bring a little bit more wolf nature and behavior into it was the challenge to me without being hokey about it or being too wolfy. Part of the whole thing of the show is that they say you could lift the supernatural out and all the story lines would remain intact. And that’s obvious. You get that about this show right off the bat, that it’s just regular people who happen to be these other things. But I thought that what made it a little more interesting for me is that this guy is a bit supernatural, he is an alpha, pure bred wolf that is seeking revenge. He gets to tap into some of these archetypal things while not having been alive for thousands of years like the vampires, he still has a kind of family aristocracy feeling. It’s almost kind of a weird culty evangelical vibe like a priest from another time, who believes what he believes with a little hell fire and brimstone thrown in there. So that was the mix I was sort of throwing into the test tubes or caldron when I was working on it so that it wouldn’t be just going in and getting a paycheck and checking out Montreal. It was an acting challenge and exercise for me because of that. I have to say that I haven’t seen any of it that I’ve been on, so I have no idea how it worked. I haven’t a clue if I was part of the ensemble or if I was oddly out of synch with the rest because I’m supposed to be..."

DIGITAL SPY: 'Being Human USA' Sam Witwer Q&A: "It diverges from the BBC original"
Monday, Apr 8 2013
By Morgan Jeffery
If you're still feeling grief pangs from the loss of BBC Three's Being Human, then now's the perfect time to check out the show's US "companion piece" - Syfy's very own take on Being Human gets its UK premiere later this week courtesy of Watch.
Digital Spy spoke to Sam Witwer - who plays the vampire Aidan - about why fans of the BBC series should tune in to the American version, his thoughts on the original show and what the future holds for Being Human USA...
... Digital Spy: The UK version of Being Human recently came to an end - what would you say to fans of that show thinking about checking out the US series for the first time?
Sam Witwer: "It's funny - I've gotten more flack from the remake nature of our Being Human from American audiences than I have from British fans. Every fan of the BBC original that I've bumped into seemed very excited and interested in seeing what we did with it - at least to my face!
"Whereas the Americans that I bumped into when we first started… they were the most harsh. I don't what that is - I don't know if Americans aren't happy with being Americans these days? The political thing is wearing on us or something…
"So I'm approaching this cautiously and with a great deal of curiosity about how people are going to react, especially as our first season follows the blueprint of the BBC's first series - but we do it in 13 episodes, they did it in six, so we go to a lot of places that they didn't.
"The thing that I would urge people to remember is that this was always approached very respectfully. It was always intended to be a companion piece and the longer that the series goes, the more that it diverges from the BBC original. In our second and third season, we're doing totally different stories.
"For the first season, we definitely have an awareness of the fact that we're telling the same story so we do throw in some twists and certain things go in the opposite direction to the BBC series, just to keep it fresh and interesting for people who have already seen the original.
"The characters are also very different - they were never intended to be the same people. They make different choices than their BBC counterparts, so it goes off in a different direction..."
Being Human USA launches on Thursday, April 11 at 9pm on Watch.
NEW episodes of Being Human season three conclude on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 9/8C on Syfy (US), with the season finale, 'Ruh-Roh.' CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE EPISODE TRAILER.

SFX MAGAZINE: Being Human USA: Meaghan Rath On Playing Ghost Sally
April 6 2013
by Tara Bennett
After three seasons charting its own supernatural course in America and abroad, Being Human USA finally arrives in the UK next week (Thursday 11 April, 9pm on Watch) with a wee bit of trepidation from some involved. “It is a strange that it’s now airing in the UK. It’s a little uncomfortable,” actress Meaghan Rath laughs to SFX.
Rath plays ghostly Sally, a character initially very similar to Annie (Lenora Crichlow) from Toby Whithouse’s UK series. Actually fans of the UK show will feel some premise déjà vu at first view with the ghost, a vampire and a werewolf as flatmates foundation exactly the same. However, Rath asks Brits to give them a try as their show veers into original territory quickly as the series rolls along...
... SFX Magazine: For fans of the UK series, what’s your pitch to give your show a try?
Meaghan Rath: “I think that because we made a choice very early on not to watch the British series before we completed our first season we were able to establish our characters as people that were personal and not influenced by the original characters. We laid down a unique foundation and the writers were able cater to our personalities and write for us which evolved into something totally different. I would say that has really changed the outcome of the show and where it is now in its third season. But at the core it’s about the same thing; these people who are desperate to blend into society. Our characters are desperate to blend into society and it’s what we as humans take for granted every day...”

GRIMM - BVTV: REGGIE LEE INTERVIEW
April 5, 2013
by Brittany Frederick
Grimm star Reggie Lee turned down Harvard to become an actor, and his decision has paid off: he’s booked roles in The Fast and the Furious, Prison Break, two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and now NBC’s fantasy-procedural series, where he plays Sergeant Wu. BFTV recently caught up with Reggie to talk about what brought him to Grimm and how playing Wu has given him a chance to do something a little different.
“When you’re a kid, you think ‘Oh, it’s so great. I’m going to go to Hollywood. I’m going to go to Broadway.’ For a long time it was such a novelty,” Reggie said of his career choice. “I always had a pretty good work ethic, and even now when I’m not working, I’ll go to class. It brings you back down to earth and makes you realize what matters is the enjoyment of it. It’s a tough business, it’s really hard – and I’m so happy. I cannot see myself sitting at a desk from nine to five!”
He’s most definitely not sitting at a desk on Grimm, where Wu helps hero Nick Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli) and his partner Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby) with their unique caseload. As season two of Grimm progresses, things could get rather, erm, grim for the sergeant. “He is definitely in danger,” teased Reggie. “Some things happen that cause a lot of peril. Because Wu is what I would call the wild card of the show – you could take him any direction...”

... Question: If NCIS: Red is half as bad as it looked during its two-part introduction, then I think it has a chance to be the worst spin-off since Joey. The premise is preposterous, and what's worse, the characters seem clichéd and lifeless. I think back to how JAG introduced NCIS and compare it with this dreck and can't help but think "Oh how the mighty have fallen." Some spinoffs have been great successes: NCIS, Frasier, The Jeffersons, The Facts of Life, Stargate: Atlantis come to mind. This isn't even on a level with CSI: Miami or Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. Please let this show die a quick death so that the actors involved can go on and find better projects to work on. — Chip
Matt Roush: I'm not a particular fan of the spinoff assembly-line mindset, especially when we get into the third iteration or so, revealing such a lack of originality on the part of the programmer that I'm happy to let the super-fans nip this one in the bud. (Because so far I have yet to receive any mail encouraging CBS to take Red to series...)

DEFIANCE - FRESNO BEE: STEPHANIE LEONIDAS EMBRACES ALIEN LOOK
April 4, 2013
by Rick Bentley
Actors in sci-fi projects have to deal with elements that performers in other genres never face including special effects make-up. Think about it. For years, LeVar Burton had to stare through what was little more than a modified car air filter to play Commander Geordi La Forge on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Stephanie Leonidas, who portrays Irathient alien Irisa on the new Syfy Channel series “Defiance,” doesn’t have to look through a car part to do her job but she does have to deal with a prosthetic pieces across the bridge of her nose. Looking at her, the make-up just looks like a cool way to create the kind of otherworld look needed for the character. She has to look out through the make-up and while the prosthetic piece is small, it’s affected how she acts.
“At first, I didn’t think I would be able to move my face,” Leonidas says during a party to promote the new sci-fi series. “Actually, quite quickly it became a part of Irisa. Even the way I would move my face differently became part of her...”
It’s hard to tell if the British actress is just happy to be on such a big cable channel project or she’s being honest about wearing the alien make-up but she tells me “it’s amazing how quickly you get use to it.”
“Defiance” starts April 15 on the Syfy.

“Defiance” starts April 15 on the Syfy.

... Question: A couple of months ago, the great and not-so-wise Syfy network stopped airing Merlin Season 5 in favor of "Rock em Sock em Robots" and delayed the last five episodes until May. I just learned the show will be out on DVD on April 9. Have you ever heard of anything similar happening before, where a show will be available to fans on DVD a month before the network is supposed to finish airing it? I know Downton Abbey fans can get the sets long before PBS even shows the new season, but an arbitrary delay when there's only five episodes left and you can get the whole season before the network is done with it? That's a new one to me. What does this carelessness say to you about where Syfy is as a company that once upon a time graced fans with Stargate, Farscape, BSG, etc? — Scott
Matt Roush: This sort of thing happens when a network acquires a show, often from another country (in this case, England and the BBC) and has no control over its distribution on other platforms, including DVD. Syfy often breaks seasons of its various series into halves, but why it interrupted Merlin this close to the end, after the show had already aired overseas and was heading toward a DVD release, is a mystery. I'd read the situation that Merlin, not being one of Syfy's own original properties, may not have been a very high priority. And at least these final episodes are being shown for the benefit of those who don't want to shell out for the DVDs...
The final FIVE NEW episodes of Merlin season five return to Syfy on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 10/9C.

... Question: Have the people behind NCIS ever publicly thanked the people at USA Network for their success? I seem to remember not remotely being aware of NCIS before I started watching reruns on USA Network several years ago, then all of a sudden boom!, it was the highest rated show on TV. By the way, just my opinion, but there is just too much damn TV to watch these days. Between BBC America, FX, AMC, Bravo, TNT, ABC, CBS, USA, Lifetime, someone could make a full-time job out of watching all the shows ... oh, wait, now I realize what you do. (LOL) — Bill
Matt Roush: Do you see me complaining? TV can be an embarrassment of riches, and while even us full-timers can't keep up with everything as much as we'd like to, it's an exciting time to be a fan and critic. (Our own Michael Schneider recently filed a terrific story on this topic.) Regarding NCIS and its cable exposure: USA could just as easily return the compliment, given how well these repeats perform for the network. For the record, NCIS was a hit long before it began airing off-network repeats on cable, but as happened before with shows like Law & Order and many others, a show's cultural footprint only tends to grow with this kind of repeated exposure. It's hardly unique to NCIS, but it does help explain how this show's ratings continue to grow from season to season, defying the conventional-wisdom odds...
