EARTH'S FINAL HOURS - VIDEO: MOVIE TRAILER - Premieres Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9/8C on Syfy

When a super-dense fragment of an interstellar mass punches through the Earth’s core, the impact slows down the globe’s rotation threatening the world with total destruction. Tech wiz, Jenna Simms, sees an unmistakable pattern correlating to fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field that will inevitably culminate in the Earth suddenly standing still.

The effects of which will not only divide the planet into searing heat and extreme cold but will also wipe out the land masses as the still moving atmosphere will sweep away anything not anchored to bedrock. Will this be Earth’s final hours?

Cast includes Stargate Universe's Julia Benson, Hamza Adam, Cameron Bright, Roark Critchlow, Bruce Davison, Hiro Kanagawa, Robert Knepper, Michael Kopsa, Julia Maxwell, Gardiner Millar, David Richmond-Peck and Alex Zahara.

SANCTUARY - SCIFI AND TV TALK: Sanctuary Writers' Room - Gillian Horvath

12/06/2011
by Steve Eramo

As a little girl, Gillian Horvath loved reading The Hardy Boys mysteries. She later became enamored of Sci-Fi/Fantasy stories by such authors as (the late) Anne McCaffery and Patricia McKillip. As these tales continued to unfold in front of her, Horvath dreamt of one day becoming a writer and, much to her delight, that dream became a reality.

When I was in high school I was a poet and actually won some local poetry awards. So I thought I’d grow up to be a professional poet, and my mother worried about my future,” recalls Horvath with a chuckle. “I then started noticing the writing credits on my favorite episodes of my favorite television series, and if, say, Michael Gleason wrote a story I knew I was going to enjoy it. That’s when I also realized that there were television writers and that that was a job that people had.

My Mom, bless her heart, when I told her I changed my mind and wanted to write for television for a living, she said, ‘That’s great. You can buy me a beach house.’ She immediately assumed that I would succeed at that, and unlike poetry there was a potential for buying beach houses in that line of work. Now fair to say I haven’t yet bough my mom a beach house, but I think she’s proud of me anyway...

Untouchable 2

... Sanctuary’s fourth season debuted back in October with a duel storyline involving Magnus trapped back in Victorian England and Will in charge of the present day Sanctuary network and trying to avert an all-out war between the world’s governments and thousands of Abnormals who have come to the surface from Hollow Earth. Horvath penned Untouchable, the episode to follow the two-part season opener and, like her previous two scripts, it had its creative hurdles that had to be overcome.

Untouchable was not the type of story that I’m automatically drawn to,” says the writer. “I mean, Awakening was this big two-handed that was all about feelings. Not Untouchable. In some ways it’s the first episode of season four because the first two are the wrap up of last year’s cliffhanger. This episode puts into motion the story that will play throughout this season, all the way to the season finale.

That’s a big responsibility, and Untouchable is far more intellectual. Damian [Kindler] actually told me, ‘Channel The West Wing and [the show’s creator] Aaron Sorkin.’ I told him, ‘I love Aaron Sorkin, but I’m not him.’ So getting used to a mode of writing and writing dialogue that is not my typical style was quite daunting, but, honestly, I can be even prouder of it than an episode that would have been easy to write. I had to really dig deep and couldn’t look into my usual bag of tricks, so I’m very pleased with what I did..."

TV GUIDE: The Guide to Tuesday TV: Sons of Anarchy and Covert Affairs Finales!

Dec 6, 2011
by Matt Roush

... "You ask for a simple white Christmas ..." and everything goes to cartoon hell on Eureka, already the most animated of Syfy's quirky series, and a natural to be brought back for a one-night-only Christmas special, a gift for fantasy fans, packaged with similarly themed episodes of Warehouse 13 and Haven...

... Even Haven (10/9c) is a cut above average, but maybe that's because the population keeps shrinking at an alarming rate, meaning less face time for some of the more annoying or colorless townspeople. Audrey (Emily Rose), who's not much of a holiday fan to begin with, can't understand why Haven is suddenly celebrating Christmas in the middle of July or why she keeps hearing "Silent Night" just as people disappear without a trace. The answer to this puzzle manifests itself in a visual image stolen from one of Stephen King's more memorable recent opuses, just as Haven itself was inspired by one of King's lesser creations...

... Warehouse 13 (9/8c) borrows from a much more familiar source, the short story on which the venerable It's a Wonderful Life was based, for its enjoyable Christmas misadventure, in which Pete Lattimer's (Eddie McClintock) brush with a magical brush results in his existence being wiped from everyone's memory. Needless to say, no one — Artie, Mika, Claudia, the warehouse itself — is better off for Pete not being around. Watching him win his way back into the exasperated affections of partner Mika (Joanne Kelly), who resists him at first sight (some things never change), is great fun. And so is the return of a favorite enemy, who's running the warehouse in the spirit of Mr. Potter...

... "You ask for a simple white Christmas ..." and everything goes to cartoon hell on Eureka, already the most animated of Syfy's quirky series, and a natural to be brought back for a one-night-only Christmas special, a gift for fantasy fans, packaged with similarly themed episodes of Warehouse 13 and Haven.

The Eureka special (8/7c) is especially inventive, as the isolated mountain town's overtaxed Super Photon Generator interacts with a child's hologram-generating storybook, and abracadabra, everyone becomes a cartoon character (including Sheriff Carter's much-abused Jeep, cleverly and petulantly voiced by The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons).

One Eurekan is saddled with a pull string, another becomes a bobble-head, another becomes a most unlikely Disney-style princess surrounded by chirping birds. And in the episode's best stroke of whimsy, the animation style keeps changing, from CGI to slapsticky old-school Looney Tunes to anime — which may come in handy to help save the town from a rampaging giant snow ninja...
