Sherlock 2

MASTERPIECE MYSTERY - PBS VIDEO: SHERLOCK 'THE BLIND BANKER' EPISODE TRAILER - ENCORE AIRS SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2012 AT 10/9C

Turns out that living with a genius isn't so easy — just ask Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman, The Office UK). Watson is scrambling to do the errands and find a job while Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, The Last Enemy) sits around, apparently in deep contemplation. Sherlock seems oblivious, and in no hurry to take a case. When there's been a break-in at a bank, Sherlock inexplicably springs into action. Nothing has been stolen, only indecipherable graffiti painted on a wall. A bank employee is soon found dead in his apartment, the windows and doors locked from the inside, and Sherlock is at full, frenetic attention. An exhausted and hungry Watson (Sherlock doesn't eat while on a case — it just slows him down) watches from the sidelines of a case of which he'll soon inexplicably find himself at the center.

Guest stars include Una Stubbs, Zoe Telford, Loo Brealey, Gemma Chan, Al Weaver, Bertie Carvel, Daniel Percival, Paul Chequer and Howard Coggins.Lukis

NPR: 'Justified' Producer Shares Crime Writing Secrets

January 19, 2012
by John Donovan

Elmore Leonard has had the kind of writing career many aspiring writers dream of. Over the course of six decades, he's written scores of successful crime novels, short stories and scripts for screens big and small.

Justified, the acclaimed TV series on FX, is based on one of Leonard's short stories, "Fire in the Hole." The show has garnered awards for its gritty yet likeable characters.

Leonard, 86, is the show's executive producer. He talks with NPR's John Donvan about how he crafts his characters for the page and screen and his 2012 novel, Raylan.

Justified airs Tuesday at 10/9C on FX.

TV GUIDE: Matt's TV Week in Review

Jan 20, 2012
by Matt Roush

On that rare occasion when someone tells you there's nothing good on TV — but honestly, why would you be talking to people like that? — gently point them toward Tuesday nights at 10/9c, a time period that became ridiculously overstuffed this week thanks to some of cable's best and most entertaining dramas. (And let's pause to give thanks to cable replays, for those with limited DVR capability.)...

... Let's start with FX's Justified, fresh as ever in its third season. Still recovering from last season's wounds, wry U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) may not be up to snuff just yet — as his boss taunts, "You can't run and you can't shoot, what good are you?" — but the show is so assured in its blend of barbed humor and deadly menace that you can always expect at least once per episode to be found laughing on the edge of your seat. Mags Bennett may be gone, and there's no replacing the great Margo Martindale, but icy-eyed Neal McDonough is giving it a robust go as a fixer from Detroit who's laying waste to local members of the Dixie Mafia. And with Boyd Crowder (the sly and sinister Walton Goggins) scheming to take control of crime in Harlan County, we anticipate a major showdown.

Bonus points for this week's guest villain: Dexter's Desmond Harrington as a stone-cold killer nicknamed "Ice Pick," who should know better than to initiate a standoff with Raylan on opposite sides of a table. (Nice tablecloth trick, Raylan.) When Ice Pick goaded Raylan in an elevator earlier on by complimenting his Stetson, then jibing, "Not much call for cowboys these days," we knew he was a goner. Great start to what's shaping up to be another lethally entertaining season...

Justified season three airs Tuesday at 10/9C on FX.

Vampire Diaries

COLLIDER: Kevin Williamson THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Interview

by Christina Radish
January 20th, 2012

Executive producer Kevin Williamson clearly gets as excited and passionate about his CW drama series The Vampire Diaries as the fans of the show do. Currently in its third season, the show is exciting and dangerous, in a way that most shows strive for but never quite live up to, leaving characters in serious peril, on a weekly basis.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Williamson talked about why it was finally the right time to have that Damon-Elena kiss that many have been anxiously waiting for, how Stefan is now a true tragic hero, knowing the right time to kill off a character, embracing the melodrama in a way that makes it epic, and what he’s excited about for the remainder of the season. He also talked about his latest pilot, which he’s been looking to make for 15 years, about a serial killer who escapes from prison and has a cult of killers helping him, while an FBI agent is working to bring them down...

... Q: Is there anything coming up with any of the other characters on The Vampire Diaries that you’re excited about for fans?

Kevin Williamson: "I’m really excited about what’s shaking down between Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Stefan and Damon, and that triangle, and how that climaxes at the end of the scene, with the hybrid of it all. And, there’s going to be more exposure to the Original family. And, Alaric (Matthew Davis) is going to be a lot of fun, in the second half of the season. He’s been sidelined with his grief for Jenna (Sara Canning), and we’ve been dealing with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and his dead ghost ex-girlfriends. Now, Alaric is ready to take a front-and-center role again and really get involved. He’s got a good storyline coming up, so I’m excited about that..."

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday at 8/7C on The CW.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - PBS VIDEO: 'GERONIMO' EPISODE TRAILER - AIRS TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2012 AT 9/8C

in February of 1909, the indomitable Chiricahua Apache medicine man Geronimo lay on his deathbed. He summoned his nephew to his side, whispering, “I should never have surrendered. I should have fought until I was the last man alive.” It was an admission of regret from a man whose insistent pursuit of military resistance in the face of overwhelming odds confounded not only his Mexican and American enemies, but many of his fellow Apaches as well.

Born around 1820, Geronimo grew into a leading warrior and healer. But after his tribe was relocated to an Arizona reservation in 1872, he became a focus of the fury of terrified white settlers, and of the growing tensions that divided Apaches struggling to survive under almost unendurable pressures. To angry whites, Geronimo became the archfiend, perpetrator of unspeakable savage cruelties. To his supporters, he remained the embodiment of proud resistance, the upholder of the old Chiricahua ways. To other Apaches, especially those who had come to see the white man’s path as the only viable road, Geronimo was a stubborn troublemaker, unbalanced by his unquenchable thirst for vengeance, whose actions needlessly brought the enemy’s wrath down on his own people. At a time when surrender to the reservation and acceptance of the white man’s civilization seemed to be the Indians’ only realistic options, Geronimo and his tiny band of Chiricahuas fought on. The final holdouts, they became the last Native American fighting force to capitulate formally to the government of the United States.
