ZAP2IT: 'Supernatural's' Jensen Ackles at PaleyFest: Is Dean's happy ending Butch and Sundance or Thelma and Louise?
By Carina Adly MacKenzie
March 14, 2011
The last time "Supernatural" was honored at the PaleyFest event in Los Angeles, they were finishing up their first season. Five years later, they're about to start filming the Season 6 finale, and the stakes have been raised significantly.
Zap2it caught up with Jensen Ackles behind the scenes to talk about what's to come for the final stretch of Season 6 -- but before we got the dish on future episodes, we wanted to get Ackles' reaction to the much-buzzed about meta episode, "The French Mistake," in which Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) suddenly found themselves living in the real world, in which they're better known as Jared and Jensen...
Stargate Universe's Jamil Walker Smith independent movie, "Make a Movie Like Spike," was featured at the Cinequest Film Festival 21 in San Jose, CA on March 8, 2011.
Cinequest Presents the 2011 Award Winners
The 2011 Cinequest Juries were put to the task of selecting winners from over 150 films from 45 countries. What they discovered were myriad worlds that challenged, excited and surprised. Their job to find the top films was certainly not an easy one, and reaching a unanimous vote was nearly impossible because the films truly affected them in many ways and heated debates were sparked because of the passion each felt for the stories that were revealed.

Two young marines hold onto their dreams even in darkness.
Luis (Stargate Universe’s Jamil Walker Smith) and Ronald (American Gangster’s Malcolm Goodwin) are best friends with dreams that extend far beyond the confines of their small Los Angeles neighborhood. Ronald is a soon-to-be father and Luis is an aspiring filmmaker who’s documenting their last 36 hours at home before they’re both deployed to fight in Afghanistan.
Their story captures both hilarious and heartwarming moments at home, but when the men turn the lens back on themselves in their darkest moment in the Afghan war zone, we find that their dreams and hopes for the future mean something entirely different within the frame of the battlefield. Director and star Jamil Walker Smith’s powerful film begs us not to look just at statistics and numbers of troops deployed and casualties, but to explore the human aspects of war and the effect it can have on the people, friends and loved ones.

... Question: Hoping you might have some thoughts on Supernatural this season. Like a lot of fans, I've been seriously disappointed by the fact my favorite show seems to be floundering without Eric Kripke at the helm. I'm finding season 6 to be an incohesive mess, with little apparent "through line" when it comes to plot and characterization, and disappointing underuse of both Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins. I'd love to know how you see things, and what your thoughts are for the show moving forward to a seventh season? As you know, the Supernatural fandom is very active online, and I'm getting the distinct impression from go-to fan forums that a good proportion of the fandom is underwhelmed by season 6, and have either jumped ship or plan to if things don't look up after the show starts airing again. — Kate
Matt Roush: I gather you weren't part of the crowd at Sunday's PaleyFest lovefest in L.A., huh? These are almost fighting words when you consider how passionate the fan base for Supernatural is. I can't speak for any fan consensus, because I rarely seek out those forums so as to keep my own perspective untainted. But I'm not surprised to hear this season has been a letdown to many — although it doesn't get better than the recent "meta" episode, which I enjoyed greatly, in part as a commentary on doing a "season 6" when the fifth season was for so long regarded as the show's likely endgame. I'm not as engaged in this post-apocalypse season as I have been in past years, and part of that may have something to do with a sense of anti-climax, a feeling that a show like this may have been better off ending on a high. Sam's soul aside, I don't feel the stakes are as high — and I often find myself wishing I were spending time with the civil war taking place in Heaven, as the stuff happening on Earth isn't as thrilling or intriguing as it used to be. (So without getting into the middle of those tiresome "not enough Dean" debates, I guess I would have to agree I'd like more Castiel — and according to reports from Paley, we will get a Castiel-centric episode soon.) But do I think longtime fans will or should bail? In a word: No. In a genre like this, you never know when the next knockout episode will happen — I'm especially looking forward to the upcoming Western-themed hour — and even mediocre Supernatural is a better diversion than most. But if you're missing Fringe for this show on Friday nights, then we have an issue. Fringe is on fire this season, and anyone with an interest in the future of TV fantasy/sci-fi/horror should be watching.

DESERET NEWS: Will 'StarGate Universe' end on a high note?
By Mark Rappleye
March 13, 2011
From its creation, "Stargate Universe" has attempted to take the well-known world of wormhole travel in a distinctly different direction by quickly establishing itself as a much darker, grittier, sexier and more violent show than its predecessors. Whether this new direction is for better or worse will ultimately depend on how the series ends.
The show is the third in the "Stargate" franchise, following the 10-season run of "Stargate SG-1" and five seasons of "Stargate Atlantis." "Universe" is currently in the middle of its second and final season. It resumes on March 15 at 10 p.m. on Syfy...
... Look for improvements in the coming episodes. Viewers will begin to see the softer side of many characters, including the callous Rush. The show also seems to be leaning further and further away from its darker beginnings, making viewers question the morals of the characters less, having fewer sex scenes and even adding some comic relief.
The show will also continue to explore the faith-versus-science debate and even reveal which characters, given the choice between going home and staying on the ship, would choose to remain on Destiny to help Rush see it through to the end of its mission.
The crew also faces temporal displacement and confronts more moral dilemmas concerning the use of other people’s bodies for Earth visits.
Now on its final stretch, will "Stargate Universe" end on a high note or become the black sheep of an otherwise successful franchise? Only Destiny can tell.

Monday at 9pm ET on NBC
After last week's devastating attack in Alaska, President Martinez looks to regain control of the situation with the help of his chief of staff (guest star Roger Bart). Meanwhile, Michael goes to track down Thomas, leaving Leila in the care of a close friend played by "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum Gabrielle Carteris. Be careful, Leila, she might be an alien; how else can you explain her playing a high school student well into her 40s?
Two new developments have Chuck (Zachary Levi) fearing for his future. First, he and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) suspect that Casey (Adam Baldwin) is carrying out private missions, which could split up the team. He's also worried that a seemingly perfect pair of new CIA operatives could render him obsolete. Isaiah Mustafa -- aka the Old Spice hunk -- and Stacy Keibler play the newbies. Robin Givens also guest stars in the new episode "Chuck Versus the A-Team."
