Once Upon A Time - Los Angeles Times: Lana Parrilla Interview

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Lana Parrilla: An evil queen and a Brooklyn hippie
By Jevon Phillips
January 3, 2013
Lana Parrilla, who plays Regina Mills/the Evil Queen on ABC's "Once Upon a Time," doesn't look very menacing as she reaches over to help with the French press coffee carafe on a recent trip to a Hollywood cafe. There's definitely a softer side to the sometimes vengeful monarch, and to the Puerto Rican/Sicilian actress who inhabits the fairy tale role.
“I grew up in Brooklyn and was tough — kind of loaded with attitude — and then I came here. I'm sure people found me kind of intimidating,” Parrilla says. “I didn't fit in on any level when I moved from Brooklyn to Burbank — on any level. And then I met a bunch of hippies and I became a little hippie myself. A Brooklyn hippie.”
It's that dichotomy that has seemed to fuel not only Parrilla but also the show itself in its second season. As “Once Upon a Time” returns to ABC on Sunday, the characters now know who they are (fairy tale denizens transplanted to a Maine town called Storybrooke years ago by a curse) and have to cope with this knowledge and the return of magic to what was once a magic-less world. Parrilla's Mills, who also is the city's mayor, fights to gain the acceptance/love of her adopted son Henry while resisting the urge to use magic — and sticking it to Snow White's daughter Emma Swan any time she can.
Mills was one of the few characters who actually knew who she was as a fairy tale being, and she, as well as the show's producers, kept the secret safe for most of the first season...
... “I wanted to confuse the audience, so I would do different takes. One where she had the knowledge that she was the Evil Queen, and some where she didn't at all. I would let producers and editors tell which story they wanted to tell,” Parrilla says. “In the beginning it was a creative choice to keep them really different. Then down the road, it's been a blending of the two characters. Now the contrast happens more in the writing, where, in the second season, she's on this road to redemption, but in fairy tale land, it's back to the moments leading up to the curse, so she's the craziest she's ever been. I love the contrast...”

TV GUIDE CANADA: Is Bo the villain of ‘Lost Girl’ Season 3?
Anna Silk says Bo has the potential to go to the dark side.
by Emily Gagne
January 4, 2013
[Syfy's] Lost Girl is about to get a little more lost. Like Willow in Season 6 of Buffy lost. Series star Anna Silk tells TV Guide Canada that her succubus heroine, Bo, has the “potential” to be the Big Bad of the upcoming third season.
“[Season 3] is about [Bo] having to come to terms with who she is, and that being fae doesn’t just mean having to choose between light and dark,” Silk reveals in a recent one-on-one interview.
“For Bo in particular, it means something else. And it could mean something dangerous and dark.”
Silk says Season 3 features multiple antagonists and that, “if things go in a certain direction,” Bo could definitely be one of them.
“Bo is more powerful than she knows,” Silk teases. “She’s more powerful than everyone knows! Except for maybe Trick. He seems to know everything!”

NCIS - Belfast Telegraph: Mark Harmon Interview

BELFAST TELEGRAH: Harmon: NCIS - lucky to be average
9 January 2013
NCIS star Mark Harmon has said NCIS has managed to go on such a long time because it started out as "middle of the range".
The 61-year-old actor has starred as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for 10 years, and is proud to have made ten seasons of the CBS crime show, which he said never got too hyped up, but has managed to survive being cancelled.
Mark said: "We had time to nurture the show, we had time to grow. We weren't good enough to get attention, we weren't bad enough to get cancelled. We just were kind of in this mid range where we just got to do the show..."
... The show, which has spawned several spin-offs including NCIS: Los Angeles, is filmed out on location in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles, and Mark believes that doesn't just have financial advantages.
He said: "No one wanted to drive out there, except the cast. The network left us alone, we were just out there doing the show, and I think there was great advantage in that over time..."

BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT: Answer Man: Explaining Curtis' role on 'NCIS'
By ROGER SCHLUETER
January 12, 2013
Q. During "NCIS" last season, Jamie Lee Curtis was almost a regular. What happened to her and her character? She has not appeared this season, and there has been no mention of her, either.
-- Jane, of Germantown
A. Fortunately for Special Agent Gibbs, Dr. Samantha Ryan is not playing hard to get. For her own safety, she's now simply trying not to be found.
As you know, Jamie Lee Curtis entered the "NCIS" universe last year as the head of the Department of Defense's Psychological Operations Division. In what was supposed to be a brief two-episode stint, the lovely Dr. Ryan was called on to investigate the alleged suicide of Navy reservist and psychiatrist Dr. Robert Banks.
But Curtis' appearance set ratings ablaze, so they wrote her into three more episodes and let the romantic sparks fly between her and the once-widowed and apparently thrice-divorced Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), who heads the NCIS' Major Case Response Team.
... But no arrangements were made to write Ryan into season 10, so her and Gibbs' budding romance came to a tragic end -- at least, temporarily -- during that explosive final episode of season nine last spring.
At the time, Ryan was probing the mind of Harper Dearing, a wealthy venture capitalist-turned-terrorist who blamed the NCIS for the death of his son aboard a ship that proved to have a faulty hull.
Like most terrorists, Dearing didn't appreciate the attention, so he began playing dirty. First, he contacted Ryan and implied that he knew her son was living nearby and that he would abduct him if she didn't back off his case.
As an additional threat, Dearing managed to have a judge release her ex-husband, a well-known felon, on a technicality. Fearing for their safety, Ryan grabbed her son and ran and has not been seen since.
... For now, though, you'll have to be satisfied following the show's ins and outs at the NCIS Database at ncis.wikia.com and www.cbs.com.

Continuum - Hollywood Soapbox: Rachel Nichols & Victor Webster Interview
Source: Hollywood Soapbox [follow link for complete interview]
HOLLYWOOD SOAPBOX: INTERVIEW: ‘Continuum’ stars, creator talk about the future
January 10, 2013
By John Soltes
The highly anticipated Canadian sci-fi series, Continuum, is set to premiere Stateside on Syfy on Monday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. The time-travel tale, featuring Rachel Nichols and Victor Webster, may largely take place in the present day, but it’s no typical police procedural.
Nichols plays Kiera Cameron, a law-enforcement agent who mistakenly gets catapulted from 2077 to the present day. She’s on the hunt for a murderous gang of terrorists known as Liber8. In the future, these “freedom fighters” battle against the corporatized world and lack of democracy. Because they disturb the status quo, they’re deemed a threat to the state. After a deadly explosion kills thousands, the group is sentenced to a collective capital punishment. But just as they’re about to check out of this futuristic world, they’re real plans come to fruition. The terrorists use a device to transport themselves back more than 50 years, and Cameron, who tried to stop the time jump, gets stuck in the whirlwind.
Now it’s up to this solo officer, with the help of a present-day detective (Webster), to save the future by changing the past.
Continuum’s inaugural season will air on Syfy, but the Canadian hit show has already been picked up for a second season...
Continuum cast: Lexa Doig (Sonya Valentine), Roger R. Cross (Travis Berta), Victor Webster (Carlos Fonnegra), Rachel Nichols (Kiera Cameron), Erik Knudsen (Alec Sadler) and Stephen Lobo (Matthew Kellog).
... Hollywood Soapbox: The genre has a lot of fans, and there’s some really great work out there. Are there some inspirations … or sci-fi you’ve enjoyed before signing up for Continuum?
Victor Webster: "I’m a huge sci-fi fan. I love all the Star Wars movies. I’ve watched TV shows since I was a kid, like Manimal, dating back to when I was in my early teens. I’m a big kid now and my imagination is very vivid. So I love shows that let me explore that and let me go out and see all that. So anything that deals with sci-fi, space, technological gadgets, super powers, I’m in."
Hollywood Soapbox: This vision of the future in 2077, it’s pretty dystopian, a little bleak with the corporations and such. Kind of Orwellian almost. Do you think that’s where we’re headed? I know it’s just one artist’s, one creator’s vision, but do you think that might be where we’re headed?
Rachel Nichols: "I think that’s one of the really interesting things about the show, and the fact that the sci-fi genre allows you to go to these places and have this idea of the future. And people accept it, and then they do ask that question: Is this where we are headed?
I hope not, because I happen to really enjoy food and running water and live animals. The future looks pretty bleak, as far as I’m concerned. But you know there’s a lot to be said for some of the different events and issues that we take on in the first 10 episodes of the show. And I’m sure in season two, we’ll dive into even more. But yeah there definitely is that recurring question of, is this really where we’re headed? And what can we possibly do to prevent that from happening?"
Continuum cast includes Erik Knudsen, Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster, Stephen Lobo, Stargate Universe's Jennifer Spence; Stargate SG-1's Tony Amendola and Lexa Doig; Richard Harmon, Omari Newton, Brian Markinson and Roger R. Cross.

Cross.
Continuum premieres in the US on Syfy on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 8/7C. CLICK HERE FOR A VIDEO SNEAK PEEK OF THEIR PREMIERE EPISODE, 'A STITCH IN TIME.'

LOST GIRL - TORONTO STAR: ANN SILK INTERVIEW
by Rob Salem
January 05, 2013
... Another successful Canadian series returning for a new season [Monday] night is the fantasy thriller Lost Girl, starring Anna Silk as a supernatural succubus named Bo.
Lost Girl, too, has its secrets of the season and Silk is not about to spill them.
“Well, umm, I can tell you what the third season is about in sort of general terms,” she hedges. “For Bo, the sort of theme for the season is all about discovery. She really learns, very quickly, that being ‘fae’ is a lot more complicated than just choosing a light or dark side, and just having her powers. There’s a lot more responsibility to it than that.
“In Season 3 she also faces probably the biggest challenge that she’s ever faced, and that forces her to really come to grips with who she is and what she is . . . it’s always so hard for me to be specific...”
Lost Girl season three premieres in the US on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10/9C on Syfy. In Canada, Lost Girl premiered on Sunday, January 6, 2013 on Showcase.
Lost Girl season three cast includes Anna Silk, Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo, Zoie Palmer, Rick Howland, K.C. Collins and new cast member, Rachel Skarsten, in a recurring role as “Tamsin.”

HUFFINGTON POST: 'Lost Girl' Anna Silk On Season 3's 'Bad' Bo And Guest Star Linda Hamilton
01/04/2013
by Annette Bourdeau
Get ready to see "Lost Girl" Bo as you've never seen her before. As the end of season 2 hinted at, the sexy succubus (Anna Silk) is going to be channeling much more of her dark side throughout the new season. That means everything will be shaken up, including her core relationships with Kenzi, Lauren and Dyson.
The show has attracted a legion of loyal followers since it debuted in 2010, and it's easy to see why. It really does have something for everyone: a little fantasy, a lot of action and plenty of raw, true-to-life relationships. In fact, Bo's complex love affair with Lauren (Zoie Palmer) has earned accolades for its realistic depiction of a same-sex relationship.
HuffPost TV Canada caught up with Silk to find out everything we could about season 3. While Silk was understandably tight-lipped (nobody likes spoilers, after all), we did manage to get her to spill about what it's like playing 'bad' Bo, touching moments she's had with fans and the show's most perfect guest star ever, Linda Hamilton...
... Q: So what's going on with Dyson [Kris Holden-Ried] this season?
Anna Silk: "Dyson's definitely more present in Bo's life. From the very moment Bo met Dyson, there was this element of deep trust she had, but also this really strong element of danger that he has. Kris as Dyson is pretty dangerous. Kris is pretty goofy in real life, he's not so dangerous! [Laughs] But he brings this weight and danger to Dyson. That's always there, and that's the thing that still appeals to Bo on a lot of different levels..."

Next Friday, it will all be over for fans of Fox's super-freaky but deeply heartfelt sci-fi extravaganza Fringe. And quite a ride it's been, through parallel universes and surreal head trips and baffling time leaps, landing its heroes into a climactic war for humanity's survival against the invading Observers, oppressive Mean Baldies from the future who favor intellect over pesky emotion.
Tender moments abound amid the manhunt tension in Friday's penultimate episode (9/8c), which explores several pertinent and profound father-son bonds as Walter (the great John Noble) immerses himself, Altered States-style, in the sensory-deprivation tank in hopes of forging a psychic connection with the mysterious "Donald," who was revealed last week to be the sympathetic Observer known as September (Michael Cerveris, and what a shock it is to see him with a shock of hair). The delightful explanation of how "Donald" got his name is just one of many reveals in this hour, including the significance of silent and solemn Observer child "Michael" — the episode is titled "The Boy Must Live," a throwback to past events and future peril — and finally we get details of the much-discussed "plan" that could vanquish the Observers. (One of the weakest and silliest elements of this final season was the endless quest to retrieve bits and pieces of Walter's plan on scattered VHS tapes — why not just record it on 8-tracks? — frozen in amber.)
In the future, whether on tape or disc or computer stream or whatever cloud our TV archives will exist within, Fringe will shine as a rare example of unfettered imagination given free rein to do its own thing, tell its wild story in its own fashion, reinventing itself season to season (some more successfully than others) while always taking us to unexpected places. Though never a pop-culture sensation on the level of The X-Files, Fox kept it going longer than most of us could have hoped, and for those loyal few who still care, we can't wait for the payoff...
