AV CLUB: Why Syfy’s superhero series Alphas is TV’s best show about mental illness

by Todd VanDerWerff
October 22, 2012

TV has always had trouble tackling mental illness as a topic. The idea of doing a series about depressed, manic-depressive, or schizophrenic characters is daunting: Where is there room for the semi-standard weekly moments of uplift? HBO’s In Treatment took viewers through several weeks of intensive psychotherapy with a variety of patients, but it never delved too deeply into actual mental illness; instead, it focused more on people with debilitating problems in their past that could be overcome with diligent talk therapy and lots of focus. (To its credit, the show never suggested these people could be “cured” in a matter of weeks, but it did speed along the process leading to their breakthroughs.) The Sopranos and Homeland revolve around protagonists with mental-health issues, but this is a color around the edges of the show, an element that informs the other stories going on at any given time.

TV’s best current show at tackling the topic of mental illness (and many other issues as well) is a science-fiction series that seems, at first, to have nothing to do with the subject. Syfy’s Alphas, ending its second season on Monday, October 22, appears to be the most successful superhero show in many years, though it never calls its characters superheroes, or involves them in typical comic-book stories. For the most part, it’s a superhero procedural, in which the central “team” of Alphas use their powers—everything from super-senses to the ability to read the electronic waves floating all around us—to track down villains who are using their own abilities to evil ends. The show’s second season ties this all together into an overarching narrative about the team’s battle with the seemingly immortal Stanton Parish, who wishes to wipe non-Alphas from the Earth. Which may sound a little like an X-Men plot, because it is.

Yet Alphas contains a surprising emotional resonance for a series that seemingly aims to be just another Syfy case-of-the-week show. Alphas is good at bread-and-butter sorts of things, with teammate banter and action sequences that are a cut above other Syfy shows. Yet the show is capable of moments of superb feeling and beauty, and it’s always striving to do much more than simply tell superhero tales in a modern setting. After just a superficial look at the show, it becomes clear what it’s really about: a group of mental patients coming together to work through their issues in a group-therapy setting. (It’s no coincidence that the show’s ostensible protagonist and team leader, played by David Strathairn, is a psychologist...)

... Alphas hasn’t yet figured out how to escape the dilemma of all series whose leads have mental illnesses—namely the idea that such illnesses make the characters such super-bad-ass crime solvers that their powers become enviable. (For an execrable example of this, check out TNT’s Perception from earlier this year, about a crime-solving professor with schizophrenia.) This is, perhaps, the sort of thing the series will never escape, given that superpowers will always seem cool on their surface. Yet the series has committed so successfully to portraying how these powers line up with real-world mental illnesses that it mostly sidesteps this question. Yes, there are cool moments, and yes, there are moments when the guy who seems least likely to save the day does so, but there are also the dark hours of the soul, when all seems lost and nobody knows what to do. At its core, Alphas is a series about healing, but it also realizes that all healing is only temporary. These people can—and will—always be wounded again...

SFX MAGAZINE: FRINGE Anna Torv Interview

Fringe‘s leading lady on the radical changes in season five, playing multiple Olivias and the end

by Richard Edwards
October 22 2012

Every new season of Fringe has messed with the show’s status quo, but never have we seen a gamechanger of the scale of season five’s opening. Returning to the Observer-ruled 2036 established in one-off season four episode “Letters Of Transit”, the new season sees the Fringe team awakened after two decades in amber to take the fight to their trilby-wearing oppressors. Last thing we knew, Olivia Dunham was missing in action, but we don’t think it’s giving too much away to say she doesn’t stay missing for long – otherwise this interview with leading lady Anna Torv might have been rather brief...

season_5-cast1

... Q: The Olivia from this universe started off very buttoned down. When you got the opportunity to play the more outgoing alt-Olivia, did you see it as a chance to let your hair down?

Anna Torv: "I just love the alt Olivia. The days when I was playing the alt-Olivia were just easier, she was just so quick to laugh, and quick to smile. She made me happy, you know. Not that I don’t love our Olivia, but our Olivia just carries so much on her shoulders. Alt-Olivia had a different function in the show as well, there was this freedom in being second-in-charge, she didn’t have to carry the weight of the cases, because that was Lincoln’s job in the alternate universe. Even that was freeing, she could be the sidekick a little bit more, whereas our Olivia is constantly responsible for saving the world..."

Fringe season five comes to Sky1 on Wednesday 24 October at 10pm.

In the US, a NEW episode of Fringe season five, 'The Bullet That Saved the World,' airs Friday, October 26, 2012 at 9/8C on FOX. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE EPISODE TRAILER.

COLLIDER: ALPHAS Guest Star Summer Glau and Showrunner Bruce Miller Talk Ramping Up the Action, Challenges of the Finale and Glau Becoming a Regular in Season 3

by Christina Radish
October 22nd, 2012

On the Season 2 finale of the Syfy drama series Alphas, Dr. Rosen (David Strathairn) and his team of alphas will have their final confrontation with season-long antagonist Stanton Parish (John Pyper-Ferguson). This unlikely group of ordinary people with superhuman physical and mental abilities are willing to risk their lives to help save the world, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to get there in time. The show also stars Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright, Laura Mennell and Erin Way.

During this recent interview to promote the last episode of the season, executive producer/writer/showrunner Bruce Miller and guest star Summer Glau, who plays tech-savvy alpha Skylar Adams, talked about ramping up the action this season, what role Stanton Parish plays in the show’s mythology, the biggest challenges of the finale, and the possibility of making Skylar a regular character in Season 3. Glau also talked about Help for the Holidays, her Christmas movie for the Hallmark Channel, how much she’d love to do a guest role on Game of Thrones, the possibility of an animated Firefly series, and voicing Supergirl for Superman: Apocalypse...

... Question: Summer, you’ve played so many great characters on so many great shows. What was it specifically about Skylar that was so fascinating and that attracted to you to the role?

SUMMER GLAU: "The first thing that attracted me to Skylar was the fact that she was a mother. That was really exciting for me. I hadn’t played a mother before. One of the most challenging things about Skylar is that she is a mother, but it doesn’t come naturally to her. In my mind, the backstory that I’ve created is that she’s been on her own for a long time and is used to just fending for herself. And then, when it comes to her child, she’s very conflicted because she has all of these new feelings that she’s probably never experienced before, in regard to loving something so much more than she loves herself, and caring for something and protecting someone else, and making unselfish decisions. For me, as an actor, that was just a very, very fertile storyline, creatively."

BRUCE MILLER: "In regard to Summer, I inherited the character from last year, and the reason we wanted to bring her back was just because there’s that conflict between someone who’s very self-sufficient, but not selfish. She has to battle those two parts of her personality, in being a mother, which is really, really interesting. It’s so hard to be a parent and be a person, in the world, who can take care of themselves, but also have to take care of somebody else..."

... Question: I hate to be one of those people that compares Castle and Bones, because there are some pretty heated Internet debates on the topic, but I can't help but feel that Castle is doing everything right with finally getting Castle and Beckett together, where Bones did many things wrong. It's been excellent to watch the immediate aftermath of their first night together, Ryan (and eventually others, I'm sure) finding out about them as a couple, and passionate romantic moments between them, all of which are things that Bones fans were denied once Booth and Bones got together. Additionally, it was awesome to hear Castle refer to them as "Caskett", a nice nod to the fans. Are the Castle producers just that much more aware of what the fans want, and do you think that they learned a bit from what Bones did (or rather, didn't do)? ... — Alex

Matt Roush: I doubt Castle's producers care as much as the fans seem to about what's going on over at Bones. My take, since you asked: While there is a comedic element to both of these character-driven procedurals, they're not that similar in tone, so I tend to ignore those who use one show to beat up on the other. The characters on Bones are much more extreme and eccentric — including the "squints," and while both of the shows invite comparisons by putting such emphasis on the romance between the two leads, I tend to regard Bones as more of a true ensemble (because of the well-developed "squints"), while Castle has from the get-go always played the traditional rom-com game more adeptly. This season, they're giving fans the very enjoyable payoff they've waited so long for, and it is great fun. Bones went about this quite differently, and "shipper" fans will clearly never get over being denied some of those same romantic beats, but to me, it always made sense, especially given the emotionally challenged nature of Bones herself. That said, for me, Castle is the current model for how to play this kind of story. And I agree with Camille, who wrote in to remark in praise of Castle: "Those two have such great chemistry, and with the smart and witty writing, I think they've proved that the 'Moonlighting Curse' is a bunch of malarkey." Always was, Camille...

Fringe Friday

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Nashville, Fringe, Castle, Suburgatory and More

Oct 22, 2012
by Matt Roush

Send your questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow on Twitter!

... Question: I'm a big fan of your column, but have never felt compelled to write you until now. I am a loyal viewer of Fringe, and was excited when it was given a fifth and final season. Unfortunately, this season has been really disappointing. I'm frankly shocked by just how different the show feels now. It's like watching a completely different story. All the themes and connective story threads are gone, and the Observers even seem different than they did the first few seasons of the show. And on top of that, it's kind of boring. I even fell asleep during the last episode. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I'm curious if others are reacting the same way? Are there different people writing it now? I really want to like the show, and I'll probably keep watching in hopes of a payoff, but the whole thing strikes me as really strange. Would love to know your thoughts. — Nick

Matt Roush: I've seen some backlash this season (especially on Twitter, where haters flourish), and some of that is understandable, but it has dogged Fringe in previous seasons as well, in part because of the show's tendency to more or less reinvent itself every season. This is certainly the most radical shift yet, with the time jump and the evolution (devolution?) of the Observers to "Invaders," as they were called in the most recent episode. I enjoyed the season opener, but would agree the following two episodes felt awfully ponderous, even predictable: Ella and Olivia arguing over the treatment of the captured "loyalist," and then the parable of heroism involving the "recordist" who decided it was time to stop mapping history and start making it, even if it required sacrifice. But the buzz is strong about this Friday's episode (which features the return of Broyles), and after all we've gone through to get to this point, I'm not about to give up on Fringe now. There's still quite a bit of story to tell this season, and it's bound to get more dramatic soon. But in a shortened final season, every episode is supposed to count, so I understand the disappointment when one or more falls flat.
