NATURE - PBS VIDEO: 'COLD WARRIORS: WOLVES AND BUFFALO' SNEAK PEEK - WOLVES HUNTING BUFFALO - AIRS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2013 AT 8/7C

Breathtaking footage of a wolf pack going after a herd of bison in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park. "Cold Warriors: Wolves and Buffalo" premieres Wednesday, February 13 at 8/7 (check local listings) and is part of the 31st season of Nature.

For thousands of years, wolves have hunted buffalo across the vast North American plains. Although westward settlement of the continent saw the virtual extinction of these vast herds and their eternal predators, this ancient relationship was not lost altogether.

On the northern edge of the continent's central plains, in a place named Wood Buffalo National Park [Canada], buffalo and wolves still engage in epic life and death dramas. By following one pack of wolves, wildlife filmmaker Jeff Turner captures how these two animal species live together in what seems like a forgotten corner of the world.

"Cold Warriors: Wolves and Buffalo" premieres Wednesday, February 13 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 31st season of Nature.

PIONEERS OF TELEVISION - PBS VIDEO: 'MINISERIES' - ROOTS - SNEAK PEEK # 3 - AMERICA CAPTIVATED BY ROOTS - AIRS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2013 AT 8/7C

"Roots" aired in 1977 and America stopped, captivated by the tale -- attracting more viewers than any television drama in history. Not only was it popular but also transformed the nations' conversation about slavery. Watch the stars discuss how "Roots" came to life in PIONEERS OF TELEVISION "Miniseries" on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. ET on PBS.

Beginning in the mid-1970s, miniseries based on novels captivated television audiences like never before. Networks poured money into the productions and reached huge numbers of viewers around the world. The key to these miniseries’ success are beloved characters that survive twists and turns that unfold over decades, including struggles to be accepted, whether in a loving relationship or within society.

Roots,” based on Alex Haley’s novel, was shown over eight consecutive nights in 1977 and attracted more viewers than any other television drama before. “Roots” was a cultural landmark that had a profound effect, shifting opinions and revealing the truth about the African-American experience of slavery.

Roots cast included pre-Star Trek: The Next Generation's LeVar Burton, Olivia Cole, Ben Vereen, John Amos, Leslie Uggams, Carolyn Jones, Louis Gossett, Vic Morrow, Chuck Connors, Ji-Tu Cumbuka, Edward Asner, Ralph Waite, Robert Reed, Lynda Day George, Madge Sinclair, Scatman Crothers, George Hamilton, Richard Roundtree, Lloyd Bridges, Georg Stanford Brown, Lynne Moody, Sandy Duncan, Moses Gunn, Thalmus Rasulala, Hari Rhodes, Lorne Greene, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Maya Angelou, Doug McClure and Cicely Tyson.

In “Rich Man, Poor Man” (1976), two starkly different brothers seek acceptance from their rough-edged immigrant father as they also build their lives in America, from post-World War II through the 1960s.

Rich Man, Poor Man cast included Peter Strauss, Nick Nolte, Susan Blakely, Dorothy McGuire, Tim McIntire, Ray Milland, Robert Reed, Bill Bixby, Norman Fell, Lawrence Pressman, Kim Darby, Murray Hamilton, Herbert Jefferson Jr., Van Johnson, William Smith, Edward Asner and Dick Sargent.

Set in Australia between 1915 and 1969, “The Thorn Birds” (1983) saga centers on a handsome priest’s devotion to both God and love of a woman.

The Thorn Birds cast included Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, Barry Corbin, Star Trek: The Next Generation's John de Lancie, Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Simmons, Piper Laurie, Earl Holliman, Ken Howard, Richard Kiley and Mare Winningham.

... Question: I love Bones, and I love most of the way the show is going except for one thing: Pelant. Every time his name comes up, I want to shut the TV off or throw something at it. How much longer before Pelant finally meets his end? (Which, odds are, would have to be death because in prison this guy would still be too dangerous — and too tempting for the writers to bring back.) — LT

Matt Roush: Can't tell you (and wouldn't if I knew) how long their nemesis will continue bedeviling them, but I'm betting the producers like the fact that this creep gets under fans' skin this deeply. Many procedurals like to create larger-than-life adversaries — a Moriarty, if you will — to keep the heroes on their toes, showing them to be less than perfect, and that not every bad guy gets put away within an hour of TV. Just roll with it...

NOVA - PBS VIDEO: 'BUILDING PHARAOH'S CHARIOT' SNEAK PEEK # 2 - EGYPTIAN ARMOR - AIRS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2013 AT 9/8C

Protective armor was a necessity in Egyptian chariot warfare. Military historian Mike Loades explains what made it so strong.

Around 3,600 years ago, reliefs in Egyptian tombs and temples depict pharaohs and warriors proudly riding into battle on horse-drawn chariots. Some historians claim that the chariot launched a technological and strategic revolution, and was the secret weapon behind Egypt's greatest era of conquest known as the New Kingdom. But was the Egyptian chariot really a revolutionary design? How decisive a role did it play in the bloody battles of the ancient world?

In "Building Pharaoh's Chariot," a team of archaeologists, engineers, woodworkers, and horse trainers join forces to build and test two highly accurate replicas of Egyptian royal chariots. They discover astonishingly advanced features, including spoked wheels, springs, shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, and even a convex-shaped rear mirror, leading one of them to compare the level of design to the engineering standards of 1930's-era Buicks! By driving our pair of replicas to their limits in the desert outside Cairo, NOVA's experts test the claim that the chariot marks a crucial turning point in ancient military history.
