‘The Cape’: James Frain behaving badly after ‘True Blood’ and ‘Tron: Legacy’

Jan. 03, 2011
by Nate Jackson

With the new NBC series “The Cape,” actor James Frain is starting off the new year in villainy — but that’s a familiar mode for the 42-year-old British actor after his leering bloodsucker work on “True Blood” and digital henchman duty in “Tron: Legacy.”

Frain was a scene-stealer on “True Blood” as the depraved, unhinged vampire Franklin Mott and he brought a sinister, sycophantic vibe to the “Tron” sequel as Jarvis, the evil underling who tries to curry favor with the film’s bad guy, CLU, even as he plots his own path to power. Now, with the Sunday night premiere of “The Cape,” the actor takes on a full-blown super-villain as Chess — a billionaire by day, psychotic killer by night.

“It’s a sophisticated idea of someone who doesn’t have superpowers but has a very focused strategy,” Frain said of Chess, who is a master strategist and manipulator and, like a grandmaster, is continually searching for his next great opponent...

Series premiere January 9th 2011 on NBC. For more visit http://www.nbc.com/the-cape/ Cast includes David Lyons, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Summer Glau and Keith David.

Tim Kang Exclusive Interview THE MENTALIST

by Christina Radish
Posted: January 2nd, 2011

The hit CBS drama series The Mentalist follows Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a track record for solving serious crimes by using his unconventional skills of observation. His role in cracking tough, high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents, which include Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), Kimball Cho (Tim Kang), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), who all think Jane is a loose cannon, but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases.

Actor Tim Kang plays Kimball Cho, the straight-arrow, by-the-book agent who has a respect for Patrick Jane, but doesn’t quite understand his approach. Before joining the CBI, Cho was in juvenile hall as a kid and then in the military, giving him a different insight into the individuals they are investigating and the crimes they are working to solve. In this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Tim Kang talked about his unusual path to acting, how much fun he has working with the ensemble on The Mentalist, his enjoyment of the acting process and that viewers will get to learn a bit more about the supporting characters throughout the remainder of the season...

... How do you see Kimball Cho’s relationship with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker)?

KANG: Because of the necessary things that we needed to do, I haven’t been able to work with Simon, almost at all, in the first half of this season. Last season, me and Simon would have some cool scenes together in each episode, which I thought was great. There is that idea that Jane and Cho are perfectly matched, in terms of the way they each go about getting the job done. Jane uses his antics and wild shenanigans and thinks outside the box, in his approach to solving these crimes. Cho is very well within that box, but is not afraid to go outside the box, in order to get the job done.

I think there is a mutual respect between the two. There’s a lot of eye rolling going on, in Cho’s mind, but he’s going to give Jane the benefit of the doubt because he recognizes that Jane has a gift that Cho doesn’t quite understand yet. Basically, Cho just wants to be a better cop and improve his skills, and he’s going to do anything that gets him closer to that goal. If Jane’s craziness gets him closer to that goal, he’s not going to discount it, at all. The one or two times that Cho has smiled, it’s because of a joke that Jane said or a point of view that he expressed and, in his own way, Cho agreed with that point of view with a little smirk. But, we parcel out the smiles for Cho...

Colin Morgan and Bradley James Interview MERLIN

by Christina Radish
Posted: January 3rd, 2011

An update of the story of the infamous sorcerer of Arthurian legend, Season 3 of the fantasy drama series Merlin returns to SyFy on January 7th. In the mythical city of Camelot, in a time before history began, and in a fantastical realm of legendary beasts and mysterious peoples, there is a dangerous world in which magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant, Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head). When Merlin (Colin Morgan), a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers, first arrived in the kingdom, he quickly makes enemies, including the heir to Uther’s crown, Prince Arthur (Bradley James). But, their friendship soon started to develop and now, three seasons in, both Arthur and Merlin know that there are greater things at stake and they must trust each other as equals, if they are to prevail.

During a recent interview to promote the show’s upcoming third season, co-stars Colin Morgan and Bradley James talked about the development of the friendship between Arthur and Merlin, the introduction of certain characters who are important to the Arthurian legend, the return of Morgana (Katie McGrath) and her impact as a villain, and how this season will really ramp things up for Season 4...

... How will the relationship between Merlin and Arthur evolve this season?

JAMES: I think they’ll get to a point where Arthur will no longer see Merlin as a servant, and they will be equals. I don’t think that will happen too soon, but I think that’s where the progression of that relationship goes. That relationship has to be quite steady in its progression and it can’t make any major jumps because it’s quite important to the show. If you suddenly made too much of an adjustment to it, I think the audience would find it a little bit weird. I’d say that there’s that progression to them becoming equals, and the high levels of trust, in these seemingly endlessly lethal situations they keep finding themselves in.

MORGAN: You’ll see Arthur change a lot, but while his father’s still around, there’s an incidence there. In any kid’s relationship with their parents, there’s always an influence there. You always want to do them proud. With magic being such a big thing for Uther, it would be hard for Arthur to change that. Certainly while Uther’s still around, it would be very difficult for Merlin to justify coming out in something so huge.

Anna (Morena Baccarin) continues the trend of showing people — hers and ours — that she is not a woman/alien to be trifled with. In tonight's Season 2 premiere, she delivers a violent address to subordinates who have doubts about her ability to lead, and, on a tip from Marcus, she puts a human scientist in her crosshairs. And if you thought the red skies were ominous, just wait until you see the rain.
