SANCTUARY - CINEMASPY: Sanctuary Season 4 Begins Build Up to a ‘Huge’ Finale

By Michael Simpson
October 7, 2011

Sanctuary returns to Syfy in the US and SPACE in Canada in a few hours with its season four premiere ‘Tempus.’ It promises to be a drammatic opener with Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) trapped in the past and the rest of the sanctuary team trying to control abnormals in their own backyard and streaming out of Hollow Earth.

Flash forward thirteen episodes and Sanctuary fans will be anticipating what looks like being an equally epic season finale. CinemaSpy was at the shoot for that episode, ‘Sanctuary for None,’ at Vancouver’s Terminal City location (where parts of the Stargate Universe episode ‘Blockade’ were filmed) during the final days of shooting. We managed to snap a few shots of that rarest of rare sights: Sanctuary on location and at night. You can check out the little that we could give away below...

Helen and Will Season 4

Recently, yours truly also had the chance to chat with stars Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne about what it was like filming on streets close to Vancouver’s infamous East Hastings location as the sun went down.

Night shoots are always crazy, super fun, and there’s a different sensibility on set,” Tapping said in a conference call. “Because, it’s three-o’clock in the morning and you’re still filming, it messes with your time clock, but there’s also a weird sense of adventure when you shoot nights. And we were shooting, again, away from home. We weren’t in the studio, we were on location in the downtown East side, which is an interesting place to shoot. We were shooting in this really beautiful space, like this old ironworks foundry, and there’s a sense of adventure to it, a sense of adventure when you shoot nights.

VANCOUVER OBSERVER: Sanctuary: interview with Director Damian Kindler

by Hayden Case
Oct 6th, 2011

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Damian Kindler is the writer, creator, director and producer of Sanctuary. His previous credits have included Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis.

I caught up with Damien between production set-ups on the latest series of Sanctuary. The interview takes place surrounded by props, costumes, and with extras wandering past intermittently. With the misty late night air, spotlights dancing about above, and with the hum of generators in the background, there is a funky sense of surrealism to the proceedings. Damian talks quickly, his mind works fast, information rolls over and over...

Photobucket

... Q: What's it like being the boss? What are your methods?

Damian Kindler: "As a director I find it is best to let everyone get on with their jobs. I write the story arc and elements of the script – it's a map, a starting point. Once you have that in place you can move from there. You have to be flexible, that's what I've learned. It's a collaborative effort and you have to trust the crew to do their jobs and let them work on it. It's also important to trust your instinct. Your first instinct is usually the right one and there's no time to over think it. Using Gil Bellows in series four of the show is an example of that. Amanda [Tapping] suggested him to me and I thought 'yeah, why not? This could be good' And it has been. He's been great to have on board. Obviously it takes time to write and plan the series and each show, but overall the whole thing has a run and gun, guerrilla feel to it. Great energy!"

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Time travel may help viewers find Sanctuary

By ALEX STRACHAN
October 7, 2011

Sanctuary (Space, 10 p.m.) [Syfy 10/9C], the imaginative homegrown sci-fi series about extratemporal goings-on and supernatural wanderings, is back for a fourth season with an eye-filling, surprisingly heartfelt episode that will satisfy fans and also appeal to the first-time viewer.

It's a time-travel episode, one of those tales that asks a big "what if ?" and leaves the viewer wondering afterward: What if, indeed? If you could travel back in time and change the world, would you?

It's an old sci-fi trope, but there's something gentle and undeniably compelling about Sanctuary's take.

The story finds the show's hero, Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), whisked back to 1898 London, where she's determined to stop a heartbroken father from saving his young daughter, who's stricken with a rare blood disease.

The story, written by series creator Damian Kindler, poses a difficult question: Is it right, or even moral, to stand by and do nothing while an innocent dies, in order to preserve the future?

Sanctuary may be imperfect, but it's a safe haven for viewers looking for a little heart and soul with their scifi flights of fancy...

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Stephen Lang loves playing man of action in sci-fi thrillers like 'Terra Nova,' 'Avatar'

BY Ethan Sacks
Friday, October 7th 2011

"Terra Nova" star Stephen Lang may look like he was torn out of a military recruiting manual, but there are days on the Fox sci-fi show's set that he feels like a little boy again.

Filming a recent scene in which he got to launch flaming arrows into the night sky inside the woods of Australia's Gold Coast - where the show films - took him back to his childhood coming of age in the movie palaces of New York City.

"I always wanted to be an actor ever since I can remember," Lang says. "My memories are of seeing Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and ['50s TV show] 'Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.' All these wonderful adventures in movies and on television, people living in these worlds of adventures, riding horses and shooting flaming arrows. And I thought, 'Wow, that's good, I want to do that.'

"I think I had a pretty rich imagination - and here I am doing that..."

... "Sanctuary" season-opener, 10 p.m., Syfy. Time-travel is a lot more fun if you follow the view of "Back to the Future" (the past can safely be altered) or "Terra Nova" (alternate time streams). "Sanctuary" insists that nothing can be altered. That limits the possibilities, as Helen chases Adam Worth to 1898; the result is fairly drab.
