TV GUIDE: Weekend TV in Review: Game of Thrones, The Killing, Great Expectations and More
Mar 30, 2012
by Matt Roush
... No fooling, this April Fool's TV weekend has something for just about everyone.
Starting with the long-awaited (though not nearly as long as Mad Men made us wait) second season of HBO's masterful epic fantasy Game of Thrones (Sunday, 9/8c). As the world of Westeros expands in year two, the animated credits begin to look like the world's largest board game of Risk, introducing far-flung new kingdoms and characters jockeying for power and plotting war on land and sea, from arid desert to icy forest.
It's a Herculean task keeping all of these divided dynasties, treacheries and vendettas straight, playing out on a canvas so large no single episode can contain all the storylines. (Not unlike George R.R. Martin's equally daunting source material, which managed to leave out a number of key characters in its fourth volume.) But once you get back in the rhythm of this enthrallingly sprawling, lusty and brutal saga, flaunting enough sex and violence to make a Hobbit faint, it's impossible not to succumb to Thrones' visceral, dark magic. As the powerful priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten) from Dragonstone chants, "The night is dark and full of terror." And wonder.
Our favorite characters are in rare form: Tyrion the imp (Emmy-winning Peter Dinklage) throwing his diminutive weight around at King's Landing with sly, hilarious cunning; little Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) on the run, a scrappy fugitive disguised as a boy; Stark bastard Jon Snow (Kit Harington) battling for his soul in the wintry wasteland beyond the Wall; exiled princess Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), in the most slow-burning story in the first four episodes, nurturing her dragons along with ambitions to build an army. And with all the giant direwolves and supernatural forces afoot, the greatest monster of all is a sadistic boy king: Joffrey Lannister (Jack Gleeson), born of incest, who nearly everyone is desperate to depose from the Iron Throne.
Game of Thrones is fantasy for adults, a corrosive Camelot where blood runs thick as ambition and honor is as rare as the wings of a dragon...

BROADWAY WORLD: Syfy's ALPHAS Season 2 Begins Production
Friday, March 30, 2012
Production begins this week in Toronto on the second season of Syfy's super-powered original drama series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell. Joining the cast this season is Erin Way (Detroit 187, Private Practice) as "Kat" the newest addition to the team of quirky superhuman investigators. Alphas is produced by Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television. The season will consist of 13 episodes and is slated to premiere on Syfy in July 2012.
Alphas follows a clandestine group of ordinary people whose unique neurological condition equips them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn) this unlikely team takes on cases the CIA, FBI and Pentagon are unwilling or unable to solve and go head-to-head with many of the criminal Alphas released from the Binghamton facility in last season's finale episode. When the series debuted last summer, it became Syfy's most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years. Overall the show averaged 3.3 million total viewers during its first season.
Erin Way joins the ensemble as "Kat," a mysterious, free-spirited young loner whose Alpha ability allows her to pick up any skill at a glance. The downside to her condition, which has plagued her for her entire life, is that her memories are short-lived and her experiences fade away after a short amount of time. Becoming a member of the team provides a purpose and direction for Kat and working with Dr. Rosen may help her reclaim her lost past...

Largely sitting on the edge of events in Game Of Thrones Season 1, Alfie Allen’s Theon Greyjoy – ward of Ned Stark (Sean Bean) and loyal friend/brother to Robb Stark (Richard Madden) – begins to play a greater role in events, dispatched to rouse his estranged family on the Iron Islands to enter the war alongside the Starks.
“I really enjoyed getting to meet the cast who’re my family in it,” said Allen to SciFiNow about Season 2, “getting to know them and just sort of who they were going to cast – it was interesting.
“The girl who plays my sister [Gemma Whelan plays Yara Greyjoy] is amazing, she’s really, really good and a really cool girl. In terms of playing him as character, it was good to find similarities – and don’t ask what they are, please! – between you and the character, and it was a journey playing it...”

SCIFI NOW MAGAZINE: Game Of Thrones’ Harry Lloyd gets into the mind of Viserys Targaryen
Game Of Thrones’ Harry Lloyd gives the Viserys Targaryen masterclass in villainy, if you haven’t seen Season One beware of extreme spoilers!
March 14, 2012
by James Hoare
We warned you about spoilers… Harry Lloyd’s precocious would-be monarch Viserys Targaryen pipped Ned Stark (Sean Bean) to the, er, crown for Season One’s most shocking death, having boiling liquid gold poured onto his head by Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). Unlike Ned Stark’s beheading, many viewers were glad to see the end of Viserys’ increasingly vile and erratic behaviour in Game Of Thrones.
Actor Harry Lloyd, though, doesn’t worry too much about the audience perception of his character.
“I don’t really think about it to be honest, I love him, or I did before he met his sticky end,” said Lloyd exclusively to SciFiNow. “I think it’s a job whoever you’re playing, goodie or a baddie - these are outside words that aren’t very helpful. You do these things, and you’ve got to try and find reasons to make it work.
“If you can find a way to do these things that are so extreme and horrible that people can come round to his twisted way of thinking, you’ve probably done your job well because no-one’s good, bad, everyone’s doing something for a reason – that’s how you’ve got to approach it, I guess...”

SCIFI NOW MAGAZINE: Game Of Thrones Season 2: Samwell Tarly is “going to change”
Game Of Thrones’ John Bradley-West on his Season 2 character arc, being rubbish at sword fights, and borderline bromance with Jon Snow’s Kit Harington
March 13, 2012
by James Hoare
First appearing in episode of four of Game Of Thrones Season 1, there was little evidence on screen that Samwell Tarly, played by The Borgias‘ John Bradley-West, was going to stick around, let alone become the best friend of Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, or mature as a character – and the latter is exactly what Season 2 has in store for the hapless Night’s Watchman.
“In this season he starts to experience emotions,” explained Bradley-West, exclusively to SciFiNow, “and certain feelings deep down inside him that you never thought he was capable of feeling. It’s really exciting, he kinda matures from a boy into a… half-man, I suppose!
“I think even though Sam crumbles under pressure quite a lot, I think the pressure is good for him and he’s going to change quite a lot. In the life that he leads, you’ve got to get used to pressure quite quickly, so it’s nice to have him experience everything – as bad as it possibly gets, as soon as it possibly can.”
As part of the cast filming in Iceland for Season 2 – alongside Rose Leslie – John Bradley-West and Kit Harington built a rapport that mirrors that of their characters – young men of the Night’s Watch, venturing North of The Wall for the first time to confront Wildlings, White Walkers, and their own insecurities.
“Luckily we had a lot of time together, on set as well as off, to really get to know each other really well,” enthuses Bradley-West, “so a trust developed, and I feel as safe with Kit as an actor, as Sam feels with Jon as a person. It’s great, he’s really nice, and I think when Jon and Sam are together, there’s a warmth. It’s a double act, and there’s a level of warmth that’s in very few other places in the series...”

Game Of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on Jamie Lannister’s role in Season 2, being Prince Charming, and working with David Benioff and Dan Weiss

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays the somewhat sinister Jamie Lannister is notoriously tight-lipped on the subject of Game Of Thrones Season 2, but he did let loose one telling snippet – his favourite episode is Episode 7, and when pushed for details on the basis that everyone’s read the books, he countered, “I don’t think it’s in the books! I can’t really say any more.”
Speaking exclusively to SciFiNow, Coster-Waldau revealed that he’s given some input into the role of the literal golden boy, but not much.
“I don’t kid myself,” said the actor frankly. “David Benioff and Dan Weiss, they’re so brilliant that it would be absurd to try and suggest changes. I talk about it, but I don’t come with little handwritten dialogues that I suggest.
Talking more about the character, he continued, “He’s not evil, I don’t see him as evil. He does some acts that are quite horrible, but there’s a good reason behind his actions.."

Another incoming character, Downton Abbey‘s Rose Leslie plays Ygritte, who encounters Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and the Night’s Watch as they head North of the Wall in Game Of Thrones Season 2, to find out what became of Snow’s uncle, Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle).
“She’s a Wildling and she comes from north of The Wall,” explained Leslie to SciFiNow, “so she’s from the True North where it’s incredibly cold. She’s lots of fun, she’s level-headed and strong – very, very strong – and she has a lot of fun teasing Jon Snow.
“She gets a lot of entertainment out if him, she can’t understand him and she can’t work him out and she goes through a whole process of trying to work out who this boy is.”
As part of Jon Snow’s storyline, she was whisked to Iceland where the production was reduced to shooting in a narrow window of four hours daylight, thanks to the country’s polar winter...

SCIFI NOW MAGAZINE: Game Of Thrones Season 2: Jeyne Westerling is different from the book
Game Of Thrones’ Oona Chaplin talks exclusively to SciFiNow about Jeyne Westerling’s bigger role and Season 2′s departure from George RR Martin’s books
March 6, 2012
by James Hoare
Another new cast member for Game Of Thrones Season 2, Oona Chaplin takes on the role of Jeyne Westerling – a character almost impossible to discuss without spoilers – although her increased role in the show is one of the first major departures from George RR Martin’s source material, and a sign that Game Of Thrones is going to increasingly follow the trajectory of The Walking Dead and True Blood and keep even fans of the written material on the edge of their seats.
“Well, there has been much speculation on the Jeyne that I’m playing all I’ll say is you guys are in for a big surprise,” teased Chaplin at at the launch party for Game Of Thrones: The Complete First Series on DVD and Blu-ray. ”There may be some canoodling involved, we can definitely say there is a kiss with a certain lovely gentleman who we’ve seen in the trailer.
“Even though the series is based on the books,” she continued, “there’s so much going on on screen and there’s so much that’s missed out from the books, so it’s like they’re two different things...”

SCIFI NOW MAGAZINE: Game Of Thrones Season 2 has “masses of action and sword fights”
Game Of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie exclusively talks to SciFiNow about Season 2, sword fighting, canoeing and the “inspirational” Brienne of Tarth
March 5, 2012
by James Hoare
As one of the newcomers to Season 2 of Game Of Thrones, Gwendoline Christie, who plays one of the knights in Renly Baratheon’s retinue, is stepping right into the fire, as Westeros hurtles further and further into outright warfare.
“[There's] masses of action scenes,” confirmed Christie at the launch party for Game Of Thrones: The Complete First Series on DVD and Blu-ray. ”There’s lots of sword fighting, lots of fighting… there’s some canoeing.”
Christie plays Brienne of Tarth, a remarkable role even on a show like Game Of Thrones which has no shortage of strong female characters. In George RR Martin’s second book, A Clash Of Kings, Brienne is a loyal knight and fearless warrior, who holds fast to an idealised vision of knighthood almost at odds with the cynicism of the world around her, constantly forced to stand her ground against the bitter jibes of her male rivals...

SEATTLE SUPERSTORM - SYFY VIDEO FEATURETTE: GO BEHIND THE SCENES - PREMIERES SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2012 AT 9/8C
Go behind the scenes of Syfy's original movie Seattle Superstorm!
When an unidentified object is shot down over the waters of the Pacific Northwest, an excavation team is sent in to retrieve it. Moments later, a dark cloud spreads through the water and empty wetsuits rise up, floating ominously on the surface—leaving no trace of the people behind. As Seattle officials inspect the debris, the sky grows turbulent, seemingly instigated by the smoke coming off the wreckage. Major Emma Peterson (Ona Grauer: V, Stargate Universe) is handed the task of identifying the threat and securing the city, while her fiancé, scientist Tom Reynolds (Esai Morales: Caprica, 24), keeps an eye on their two teenage children. However, the scientist in him is unable to ignore the strange occurrences taking place around him and he sends the teens home, unaware that he is putting them directly into the path of danger. Now the family must find each other in the midst of the chaos and work together to put a stop to the storm before it spreads beyond their control and annihilates the planet!
Cast includes Caprica's Esai Morales, Stargate Universe's Ona Grauer, Jared Abrahamson, MacKenzie Porter, Martin Cummins, Michelle Harrison, Matty Finochio, Dominika Juillet and Jesse Moss.
