'DOOMSDAY PROPHECY' - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: JEWEL STAITE AND AJ BUCKLEY

by: Jamie Steinberg

... Q) How did you both get involved in the project?

A.J. Buckley: "I just got a call randomly from my agent and they'd mentioned there was some interest. And I said two things. I said you know, "I love disaster movies," and then they said it was going to be shot in Vancouver which is my hometown. And it was on my hiatus from CSI. And going home to film is kind of like a paid vacation because I rarely get to see my family and working as well down there, it's kind of like a double bonus. So I read the script and spoke with the director and I was excited. And with CSI I'm so confined to this character that lives in a lab. So I just knew that there were so many times in the script where you just read things were exploding or falling apart or racing in a car, and I was like, "Oh this would be actually really fun to go and do," you know, get out of what I've been doing for so long. So I was real excited to go and do it."

Jewel Staite: "It was kind of the same thing for me. I'm from Vancouver as well, and I'd been living in LA for the last few years. And any time I get to work in Vancouver I totally jump at the chance. But I'd done a sci-fi movie before called Mothman, everybody knows it, award winning. And I had so much fun on that shoot. I had a blast. So I knew that I was going to have a good time. And then they mentioned that A.J. had been cast as the lead. And I'd always heard about A.J., because we're both from Vancouver and we kind of know all the same people. And I was like, "Oh cool. I finally get to work with this guy."

A.J. Buckley: "I actually knew your husband first from back in the day in Vancouver, and we were kind of indirectly friends through a really good friend of mine. And yes, it was fun. We did have an incredible time filming. It was an absolute blast."

Jewel Staite: "Yes, these sci-fi movies are a lot of fun to do. They're a riot..."

The merriment has indeed begun – Thursday, August 11/11 marked the first day of shooting “Silent Night” – a stand-alone episode of HAVEN that will air in different time slots throughout that week (we’ll let you know when they’ve been announced)...

HAVEN - GIVE ME MY REMOTE TV: HAVEN Co-Creator Sam Ernst Talks About the Audrey-Duke-Nathan Triangle

August 12, 2011
by Marisa Roffman

I talked with HAVEN co-creator Sam Ernst about the complexities of the Duke-Audrey-Nathan relationship, the Duke-Nathan friendship and why there are some words Duke won’t use...

Photobucket

... Q: There’s triangle of sorts between Audrey, Duke and Nathan. Sometimes it seems like it’s romantically tinged and other times it feels more like they’re a family unit. Are you going to delve more into romance between any of these characters?

Sam Ernst: The short, incomplete answer is yes. What we’re trying to do is ... when you put a man and a woman together — partners or friends — the first question you want to know is are they going to sleep together. I don’t know why that is but it just is. [Laughs] And I know that with Nathan and Audrey, there were mash-up videos about the two of them four episodes in on season one. And we had not even explored that at all. In episode eight when the big reveal was that Nathan could feel Audrey’s touch — when she gave him a chaste, friendly kiss — we knew that changes the dynamic between them because you have a man who cannot feel anybody and the only woman, the only person he can feel or even get physically intimate with is his partner, his friend. That’s pretty powerful stuff.

We also like the idea of exploring their friendship as well. The fact that you do have people who are facing huge crises every week and there’s a friendship — a relationship — that’s intimate on many other levels as well. So, we really want to flesh that relationship out in ways out unlike other shows who linger in the “will they or won’t they” arena. And while we definitely are interested in that, because we’re people, we’re interested in all of the other aspects of their relationship as well. And why again, in this case, this isn’t solely a love triangle, this is a triangle that could go many, many, many different ways. And that becomes more and more clear especially by the time we get later on into the season. That has a major twist...

WAREHOUSE 13 - PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Finding his way to 'Warehouse 13'

A Haddonfield grad was a lowly Syfy aide - then one day had a story idea. Now he's a screenwriter.

By Tirdad Derakhshani
Sat, Aug. 13, 2011

Haddonfield gave birth to Syfy's hit TV thriller-omedy Warehouse 13 - or at least its next episode.

Quite literally.

The episode, "Don't Hate the Player," to be telecast at 9 p.m. Monday, was conceived and written by Haddonfield High School alumnus Ian Stokes, one of the newest additions to Warehouse 13's stable of screenwriters.

"Television writing really is a team effort," says Stokes, 28, to dispel the illusion he wrote the thing while locked away in a garret. (Do they even have garrets in Hollywood?)

"There are 10 staff writers on the show . . . and showrunner [executive producer] Jack Kenny oversees it all..."

'DOOMSDAY PROPHECY' - NEWSARAMA: Firefly Alum Fights DOOMSDAY PROPHECY in Syfy Movie

By Jenna Busch
12 August 2011

In the brand new Syfy original movie Doomsday Prophecy, Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate: Atlantis...but you knew that) plays an archeologist who teams up with A.J. Buckley (Supernatural), a book editor, to hunt down the mysterious author of novels predicting the future; it turns out the author has a device enabling him to see the future...and the end of the world. We were lucky enough to participate in a conference call with Staite and Buckley who told us all about their characters, working on one of those famous Syfy originals, sci-fi fans and their own feelings on doomsday prophecies. Staite even weighs in on Firefly and how big a fan her co-star Nathan Fillion really is...

... Nrama: What is going to make people tune in to see Doomsday Prophecy?

Staite: "Because it's a disaster movie. Who doesn't love disaster movies? I know I do."

Buckley: "My beard...looks awesome in the movie. No, I think you know..."

Staite: "It does. It's a very thick beard."

Buckley: "I got to see a screener of it. If you're into 2012's coming and any sort of conspiracy and it definitely touches - there's some stuff on there that I responded in the script like, "Oh, I've heard of this before." So they did a nice way of tying in some really good conspiracy. But it's a fun little film. I think people would really enjoy watching it. It's action packed and a lot goes on and yes, it's fun...'

HAVEN - ASSIGNMENT X: Exclusive Interview: Eric Balfour finds safety in Syfy’s HAVEN

The actor talks about playing the supernatural town's resident con man in Season Two

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN
August 12th, 2011

Based very loosely on Stephen King’s novella THE COLORADO KID, Syfy’s series HAVEN is now airing its second season Friday nights at 10 PM. The title enclave is a small town in coastal Maine where most of the residents are a bit more than human. FBI Special Agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) came to Haven in the first episode to investigate a murder, but has stayed on to look into various strange events, including the town’s ties to her own past. One of the few people Audrey meets who doesn’t seem to have some sort of supernatural ability is Eric [Balfour's] character Duke Crocker.

Los Angeles native Balfour has done a few other science-fiction/horror projects – the remake of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, VERITAS: THE QUEST, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, SKYLINE and playing Jesus in SAVING GRACE – but his credits cover a whole range of genres, including work in 24, CONVICTION and WHAT WOMEN WANT. He also recently made his directorial debut with the “Duccio’s Madonna” segment of the indie anthology DO NOT DISTURB and is now in development with that film’s producer Mali Elfman on an adaptation of JESUS HATES ZOMBIES.

Speaking by phone from HAVEN’s Nova Scotia location, Balfour tells us about Duke...

Photobucket

... AX: It seems that everybody in HAVEN – both the series and the town – has some sort of supernatural endowment, but do we know what Duke’s is yet?

BALFOUR: "Actually, he is human. Some of the characters in the world of HAVEN have supernatural afflictions. Until recently, it was a safe zone for people with supernatural curses or afflictions or what have you. People for generations have come here in hopes of relinquishing whatever that thing was that inhabited them. Some of those curses may not necessarily be bad things – they may be things that they can’t control – but when the series started, for whatever reason, the veil of protection lifted off this town and it became, as it were, a Molotov cocktail of the supernatural.

My character grew up in the town and left for a long time. He’s sort of a modern-day pirate. He’s a smuggler and a con man and he came back to this town because it was very good at keeping its secrets. It’s a good place for him to operate out of. As the show has gone on, we’re going to see in Season Two, his motivations changed. He had an occurrence in the first season where he basically found out how he was going to die, because of one of the characters from last season’s psychic abilities to show people how they will die, and now that he knows and has this information, like any good con man, he’s trying to con his way out of his own death. So a big part of my character’s storyline this season is trying to figure out how to cheat death. Duke at this point – we don’t know of any affliction that he has, but given the rules of the world, people’s afflictions are brought on and manifest in different times in different ways. Usually, they’re brought on by some form of traumatic experience or trauma or pain and that’s what triggers it to manifest. That hasn’t happened yet to Duke, and it appears as if he doesn’t have one, but you never know in HAVEN...
