FILM.COM: WHAT 2 WATCH: Your Time’s Up, Chuck

by Charlie Toft
January 23, 2012

The silver lining to NBC’s struggles of recent seasons is that the network has seen fit to allow several excellent but low-rated series to stay on the air, for lack of anything better to try instead (look at it this way: there were shows NBC was considering a year ago at this time that were even worse than The Playboy Club). We got five full seasons of Friday Night Lights, and for much of that time it was probably the best show on any of the four major networks. Neither Community nor Parks and Recreation would have made it past one season anywhere else, and despite the Emmy love, the same might even go for 30 Rock.

And then there’s Chuck, which ends its five-season run this week (Friday, 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.) despite being one of the most endangered shows on the air for its entire lifespan. To be honest, I don’t think Chuck has ever regained the heights of its first two seasons, but it’s usually been a breezy hour at the very least. The final hours offer up a new opportunity for Sarah and Captain Awesome, while Chuck is forced to enlist a motley crew to ensure his future. Hopefully his retirement will be filled with lots of sandwiches and discount electronics...

... "Castle'

This very popular crime drama is doing just fine in its fourth season, mostly due to the great chemistry between mystery novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and New York detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). (Look for a 1940s-themed episode next month. Wow, these guys look great in period duds!). Tonight's episode involves the death of a famous dog trainer and a suspect reality-TV star. Suspect? Say it isn't so. 10 p.m. Monday on ABC...

... Question: Two questions for you regarding Once Upon A Time: Where did Henry get the fairy-tale book and the idea that everyone in Storybrooke is a fairy-tale character trapped there by his "mother," the evil queen? I don't remember this ever being addressed, yet Henry's knowledge of and belief in the curse, and the book that has become a sort of guide to the characters, was never explained ... was it? Also, if time stands still in this town, why hasn't anyone noticed? Clock hands don't move and nobody gets any older, but this too hasn't been properly explained. I know, I know ... nitpicking a show about suspending one's belief and fairytales. But these two things have just bugged me all season. — K

Matt Roush: I think the reason I didn't much enjoy Once Upon a Time until I got to the third episode (with the first major Snow White-Prince Charming back story) was that I couldn't stop nit-picking at some of these same things, feeling that the concept was swallowing the show. Since then, I've relaxed and learned to just roll with it, and it's become appointment Sunday viewing — although I much prefer the fairy-tale twists to the goings-on in Storybrooke. But to your specifics, didn't the clock start moving again once Emma came to town? That was little Henry's first win. And part of the overall premise is that the curse, which keeps them trapped in this town, also keeps them from noticing that they're not aging among other things. As for the book, if its origin has been fully explained, I missed it. But it's still early days, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Henry-centric episode laying some of that out.

It's taken all spring and summer, but the salmon finally return to Admiralty Island to spawn.

Alaska's Admiralty Island is home to an estimated 1800 brown bears, the largest concentration of bears in the world. Nearly 100 miles long and 20 miles wide, it is half the size of Yellowstone National Park, yet it sustains four times more grizzlies. The native Tlingít people call this island "Kootznoowoo," meaning "Fortress of the Bears." It is a place where bears depend on fish, fish depend on trees, and the trees depend on fish-eating bears to spread the nitrogen rich bodies of salmon throughout the forest. Everything depends on the annual salmon run. When a change in the weather keeps the salmon from arriving, the entire ecosystem is affected. Enter a world shaped by bears, trees, and salmon, and explores the delicate balance of their interconnected lives.

"Fortress of the Bears" premieres on PBS Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 30th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series.

HALLMARK HALL OF FAME - ABC VIDEO: 'A SMILE AS BIG AS THE MOON' MOVIE TRAILER - PREMIERES SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2012 AT 9/8C

John Corbett stars in 'A Smile As Big As The Moon,' NEW Hallmark Hall of Fame movie about a special ed teacher who achieved an impossible dream and took his class to NASA's Space Camp, airing Sunday, January 29 on ABC.

John Corbett ("Sex and the City," the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie "November Christmas") stars in the inspiring story of a high school football coach and special-education teacher who worked to achieve an impossible dream -- to take a class of special-education students to NASA's Space Camp -- in the new Hallmark Hall of Fame film, "A Smile as Big as the Moon," premiering SUNDAY, JAN. 29 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. The movie is based on the memoir of the same title, written by teacher Mike Kersjes with Joe Layden.

Space Camp is a competitive education program at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Even though it's designed for gifted science students, Mike, a special education teacher and football coach at a Michigan high school, decides participating in the science program would do wonders for the self-esteem of his students - especially Ben (Peter ten Brink), a boy with Down syndrome who dreams of becoming an astronaut.

Aided by fellow teacher Robynn McKinney (Jessy Schram), Mike faces incredible obstacles in trying to make his dream become reality. School administrators oppose the plan as being too expensive, and Space Camp officials (led by Dr. Deborah Barnhart, played by Cynthia Watros) are skeptical... They've never had special-ed kids apply before.

At long last, Mike and his students are given the green light. And then the real challenges begin, over nine months of rigorous teaching, learning, training and fund-raising. The kids are belittled and, in some cases, bullied by their fellow classmates, but Mike finds a way to keep them on track. He even convinces the school's football team, his other students, to help them prepare for the intense physical challenges of Space Camp. The class finally leaves for Huntsville, Alabama. Will kids with Down syndrome, Tourette's, learning disabilities and emotional problems be able to leave their baggage behind, coalesce into a team and compete with some of the brightest students from across the country?

In the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, many of the special-ed students were played by young actors who are, indeed, "special," with Down syndrome, autism and learning disabilities. The film was shot in Wilmington, NC and at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Cast includes John Corbett, Jessy Schram, Cynthia Watros, Logan Huffman, Keson Loder, Breezy Eslin, Peter ten Brink, E. Roger Mitchell, Keith Flippen, Moira Kelly, Mike Pniewski, Cameron Deane Steward, Mcsen Lintz, Mathew Lintz and Louise Linton.
