COLLIDER: Anson Mount Talks HELL ON WHEELS Season 2, the Best Part of the Job, Walking the Line Between Hero and Villain and More
by Christina Radish
August 19th, 2012
The second season of Hell on Wheels continues its epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a former Confederate soldier, and his dramatic journey West, as he struggles to leave his past behind. After a plot-based first season, Season 2 is focusing much more on the characters, their histories and their ambitions, where they come from and what makes them tick. The show also stars Common, Colm Meaney, Dominique McElligott and Christopher Heyerdahl.
During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actor Anson Mount talked about how Hell on Wheels is really a show about ambition and where those ambitions come from, that his character starts in a more savage place this season, how the best part of the job is getting to be on a horse, on an almost daily basis, that Cullen Bohannon has both a hero and a villain in him, how he’s never had so much freedom, in film or television, where the relationships will be progressing this season, and what it’s been like to have such great directors on the show. He also talked about how he came to be in the ABC pilot for the mid-season drama series Red Widow, from Melissa Rosenberg (writer of The Twilight Saga franchise), about one woman’s (Radha Mitchell) dangerous journey into the world of organized crime, all in the name of keeping her family safe...
Anson Mount and Dominique McElligott
... Collider: Where are things headed with The Swede’s (Christopher Heyerdahl) obsession with Cullen?
MOUNT: "Oh, man, wait until you see! You haven’t seen nothing yet! Chris Heyerdahl really turns it on this year, and that character goes to some really interesting places. What I really like about what they’re doing with that character this season is that, from the beginning, he has this quality of being the devil on the shoulder. He does that for several characters this season, including eventually Cullen. He’s almost like the bad side of someone’s conscious. You see him influencing people, in certain ways, because he is so emotionally intelligent. And then, he, himself, starts to burst out of that guise and become his own evolving monster. Towards the end of the season, he’s becoming just such an interesting nemesis. I love where they started him out this season, being the muckraker of Hell on Wheels. It really puts him in a place where he has to fight and claw his way back to the top..."
Hell on Wheels airs Sunday at 9/8C on AMC.

YAHOO! TV: LeVar Burton returns to TV on ‘Perception,’ talks ‘Reading Rainbow’ 2.0
By Suzy Byrne
Aug 16, 2012
Depending on when you were born, you will likely have different associations when you hear the name “LeVar Burton.” There was his groundbreaking role in the 1977 miniseries “Roots” that first put him on the map. You don’t have to be a hard-core Trekkie to remember his “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987-1994) character Geordi La Forge, the visor-wearing helmsman of the Enterprise. And for 26 years, children went on educational adventures with him as host of the beloved PBS series “Reading Rainbow.” Since the kids’ show ended its run in 2009, Burton has been “gliding under the radar” he tells Yahoo! TV, but now he’s back in a big way with a guest role in “Perception” – and a re-imagined version of “Reading Rainbow.”
The 55-year-old makes his debut as a university dean on TNT’s new crime drama “Perception,” which stars Eric McCormack as a schizophrenic college professor who helps the FBI solve crimes, on Monday, August 20. The role – playing Deal Paul Haley – reteams Burton with show creators Ken Biller and Mike Sussman, who worked on “Star Trek.”
“When I read this pilot, I knew Ken had something on his mind; he draws characters really beautifully,” Burton says. “Then I saw that he had gotten together with Eric McCormack – who I really respect as an actor, and he’s a producer on this – about this idea around mental illness and what our perception of reality actually is, it was just really interesting stuff that I thought deserved to be on TV and I wanted to be part of it...”

Without much notice, Syfy has shifted the timeslot for this enjoyable show, which bodes incredibly well for its future. Here’s hoping that this is just the network trying to get the series out of the path of Grimm or something, and not a sign that Todd VanDerWerff has canceled another show.

... Question: I've just now heard about Alphas on Syfy. I missed Season 1, and jumped in by watching the first episode of Season 2. It seems to be X-Men's cousin, from what I can tell. Have you seen it? If so, do you enjoy it? Is it worth investing my time into it? I know, that's kind of a subjective question. — Don
Matt Roush: Nothing wrong with a subjective question, as long as you take into account that not everyone agrees on what's worth watching. (I would venture that several of the shows that have come up in this week's column aren't ones I would necessarily recommend, but I can appreciate that others enjoy them.) My initial impression of Alphas wasn't all that enthusiastic. I like some of the actors (David Strathairn as team leader Dr. Rosen and especially Ryan Cartwright as Gary, the boyish human computer), and appreciate that these superheroes don't always play well together, but the whole enterprise felt a bit less than fantastic — bland, to be honest, and I only watched sporadically through the first season. (Bottom line: If you're just starting to watch now, that's probably OK.) Things seem to have improved this year with more of a serialized through-line as our heroes chase down the escaped rogue Alphas, and Rosen spars with the possibly immortal Stanton Parish. Still, it doesn't exactly scream "must-see." In the bigger picture, while I enjoy the whimsy of Warehouse 13 and already miss Eureka, I still yearn for Syfy to give us a show that's a little more out-of-this-world than Alphas manages to be...

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Warehouse 13's Genelle Williams - Maternal Instinct
by Steve Eramo
08/20/2012
No matter how tough the mission of the week is for our heroes on Warehouse 13, they know that they always have a safe and comfortable place to come home to in Leena’s Bed and Breakfast. Its proprietor has a long association with the Warehouse, possibly pre-dating its current Special Agent in Change, Artie Nielsen. Leena serves mainly as a researcher as well as archivist and is privy to a number of Warehouse-related secrets, some of which even Artie is unaware of. She first appears in the show’s pilot episode, and the actress who plays her, Genelle Williams, remembers auditioning for the role as if it were yesterday.
“I actually missed my first audition because I was having my tonsils out that week, so I couldn’t exactly speak,” recalls Williams. “I was really disappointed, especially because it was one of the first auditions where I wouldn’t be playing a teenager. Prior to that I’d done a lot of children’s shows for the Family Channel and similar networks, so I was really looking forward to it.
“Thankfully, they [the Warehouse 13 producers] hadn’t cast the Leena role yet, and I believe it was a week-and-a-half or two weeks later that they called me in and I auditioned for Jace Alexander [director and co-executive producer for the pilot]. We did the scene once and then spent the next 35 minutes or so just taking about anything and everything, including the fact that Canadians say ‘sorry’ too much, because I kept saying, ‘sorry,’” she jokes. “It was a very interesting audition to say the least, and I was lucky enough to get the part..."

Syfy, 08:00 p.m. ET
I’ve been impressed by this show this season, even more than last year. It’s gotten a little darker, a little less predictable, and a lot less formulaic. Besides, the talented David Strathairn, as the mentor to a group of paranormally gifted misfits, takes his role and this show very seriously – so why should we do any less? This week’s guests include Lauren Holly, in a show that starts with a body in a drawer at the morgue. In case you’re worried: Lauren Holly does not play the body.

HAUNTED HIGH - SYFY VIDEO: MOVIE TRAILER - PREMIERES SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 2012 AT 9/8C
Teens learn the ultimate lesson while trying to escape a ghost inside their high school. Syfy Original Movie Haunted High premieres Saturday Aug 25 at 9/8c.
An unlikely earthquake shocks the students and faculty at Helville High. It's the weekend before Homecoming and the kids planning the event are stuck at school as a result of the quake. After the School Board decides that the quake was due to a gas leak in the basement - the Homecoming party will go ahead as planned.
Unknown to all, the earthquake released spirits that have been trapped in the walls of the school for years who immediately possess Principal Spiro (Mike Kimmel) and other faculty and students. An aftershock turns the Glee Club's big practice dance number into mayhem, and the school is on lockdown - no way in or out. There are eight kids stuck inside the school who start to realize that their teachers are not who they used to be! The paranormal incidents at first seem funny, and add. Then things get decidedly tense as students find themselves trapped by the ghosts with no way out. In order to defeat them, they must become unlikely teammates, inventing clever ways to resolve the school's secret urban legend.
Cast includes M.C. Gainey, Lauren Pennington, Shawn C. Phillips, Danny Trejo, Jonathan Baron, Gabe Begneaud, Charisma Carpenter, Marc Donato, Sergio Figueroa, Stephanie Fischer, Griff Furst, Dana Michelle Gourrier, Danielle Greenup and Mike Kimmel.
