... Question: While I am never happy to see actors lose their series, there is always the light at the end of some of their tunnels in the form of being able to come back to previous characters established on other shows. Case in point: Hawaii Five-0. Now that Terry O'Quinn is no longer residing at 666 Park Avenue, I'd love to see his Joe White character re-emerge. And I'd be thrilled for Autumn Reeser, who has lost Last Resort, to return as Danny's girlfriend Gabby. They had great chemistry and it's a relationship that hasn't ended but has just been off-screen. Any word on these possible returns? — Karen

Matt Roush: According to this recent story, Terry O'Quinn is a lock to return — makes sense, given that the producers had said even before the season began that they hoped to get him back if his schedule worked out (and now it has). No word that I'm aware of regarding Reeser's character, but since she was already filming in Hawaii for Last Resort, I can't imagine it would be much of a stretch if they wanted to bring her back...

... Question: I've loved Bones since day one, and am thrilled they'll get another season, but the goo and slime (with sound effects!) are simply getting too gross. I've actually begun DVR'ing the show just so I can fast-forward through the ickiness. I expect they were trying to appeal to the teenage boy aesthetics, but c'mon, is that really the demographic that is watching? I think not. To whom can I appeal that this characteristic of the show is simply unneeded? The stories don't need the gore. And I suspect the more of us who DVR to avoid the gruesomeness are also avoiding the commercials, not what I expect the show's sponsors want to hear. — Connie

Matt Roush: Maybe I'm just an immature fanboy at heart, but those icky bits are part of the appeal of Bones to me, and these kinds of sound effects amplifying our squeamishness have been with us since the days of radio (sample Arch Oboler's classic Lights Out if you doubt it). One of the charms of the Bones character is that she's absolutely unfazed by any of these gross-outs. In one of this week's Monday episodes, she nonchalantly asks Hodgins at a crime scene, "Can you please get the bugs off my eyes?" Made me giggle. This is not an uncommon complaint about this show, however, and the producers are very aware of it. Probably makes them take even more delight in making us squirm through those moments. As for the DVR issue: I'm pretty sure the gore isn't the main reason most people are DVR'ing this or any other show. It's convenience, and the way many of us are consuming TV now regardless of content...

... Question: I really like The Big Bang Theory on CBS. One thing I was wondering is whether or not we will ever meet Sheldon's infamous Meemaw. In one episode he said that he would be "one inconsolable moon pie" if anything ever happened to his Meemaw, so we know that she is still alive somewhere. — Becki

Matt Roush: Nothing on the immediate horizon, though executive producer Bill Prady puts it this way: "As with all questions about characters' relatives: Maybe, if we have a good story!" But wouldn't that be a great role for Frances Sternhagen (Brenda's mom from The Closer)?

To do so, you'll need to go to cbs.com or Twitter during the show and select either "the boss," "the teaching assistant" or "the student," and the most popular choice will be revealed at the end of the episode. ... DEM BONES: They're gonna rise again, with Bones earning a ninth season, as confirmed last week by Fox. For now, the durable crime drama/romantic comedy continues its eighth season, returning from its winter break with a double feature of back-to-back episodes (8/7c). In the first hour, Bones and Booth put their best foot forward with a romp set behind the scenes of a TV dancing competition — which means a flurry of cameos by past contestants and current personalities from Fox summer treat So You Think You Can Dance. Neither Emily Deschanel nor David Boreanaz are especially convincing as undercover dancers, but their final turn on the dance stage leaves a smile on the face, and Dance judge Mary Murphy wondering, "Are we being punk'd?" Separately, frustrated painter Angela (Michaela Conlin) suffers a career crisis, as she realizes, "I'm not pursuing art, I'm pursuing murderers." On network TV, my dear, that may be as close as you get.

The second hour is back to business, when the Jeffersonian crew investigates the death of a pop archeologist found in a grisly cocoon. The victim's latest discovery, of very ancient bones, leads to a turf war between Bones and former squint Dr. Edison (Eugene Byrd) as they go about solving a second crime several millennia old...

... TIME COP: I want what she's wearing. That might be your initial reaction upon meeting Kiera (Rachel Nichols), a dogged police "Protector" from 2077 who inadvertently is catapulted back some 65 years — to our present — in pursuit of eight time-tripping terrorist fugitives. Decked out in a snug smart suit that absorbs bullets and has more high-tech bells and whistles than Batman's utility belt, the head-turning Kiera also is implanted with audio-visual bio upgrades in her skull that allow her to converse with a tech geek — because every fantasy-adventure must have one — who guides her through this strange, so-old-it's-new world.

That's the simple if not simplistic premise of Syfy's latest Canadian import Continuum (8/7c), which is also about a "lost girl" of sorts (Lost Girl returns for a new season at 10/9c). Kiera left a husband and young son behind, and as much as she wants to see justice done in her new guise helping the local police — how they buy her cover story requires a major leap of faith — she even more desperately wants to get back home. The most puzzling aspect of the series, judging from the first two episodes, is that the future that Kiera is trying to preserve and return to seems awfully bleak. This civilization is run by giant, soulless corporations that bailed out ruined governments, in the process quashing such values as representation and free speech. The terrorist thugs she's chasing (including Roger Cross, best remembered as Jack Bauer's ill-fated CTU buddy Curtis Manning) are clearly bad guys who've crossed the line in their explosive revolutionary fervor, but they seem to have a point.

The badass Kiera is the best role I've seen Nichols play — I recall being underwhelmed by her in latter-day Alias — but Continuum, like so many contemporary Syfy series, has a drab, perfunctory visual style and often feels like just another shoot-'em-up with a slightly more fantastic hook. I'm still waiting for that next groundbreaking Syfy show to startle me out of my own continuum. Maybe Defiance in April will do the trick...

MONSTERS & CRITICS: Exclusive: Sam Witwer interview for Syfy Channel ‘Being Human'

By Ian Cullen
Jan 13, 2013

In a recent interview, Monsters and Critics caught up with Sam Witwer, who plays the role of vampire Aiden and shared a few interesting things about season three as well as some insights about his continuing involvement with the Star Wars universe.

Photobucket

... Monsters &Critics: In the last series [season] your character was in a bit of a messed up place having lost the love of your undead life and winding up getting buried alive...

Sam Witwer: "Before you go further with that question. I’d like to bring something up that’s kind of interesting. It was not... You know as much as there was love there and there was a relationship there and it meant a great deal to Aiden. That was not what you would call... And I say this for specific reasons for what we see in the season.

That wasn’t who we would call the love of his life. In fact we knew that going in. You can’t end the second season of the show and introduce the love of someone’s life because it doesn’t leave you much place to go for any women you might want to meet later on in the series.

What we were intending to do was to show kind of a bad relationship. You know what happens when there’s that girl you wanted to date in High School and you never got to date her, but then you’re in your 20s and you finally get to date her, but it’s not quite what you thought it might be. And you are fighting and you know... You’re having sex, but you’re fighting, but you’re not fighting when you’re having sex. When you’re not having sex you're fighting. It’s just this very turbulent relationship that brings out the worst in you. And that was really the direction that we took that relationship in...

Season Premiere: Syfy’s supernatural dramedy -- featuring a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living as roommates -- started out as a remake of a British TV show, but now entering its third season, it’s established a weird yet cool vibe all its own. Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, with vampire Aidan banished and buried by the blood-sucking brotherhood.
