TV GUIDE: Fringe Oral History: The Road to the Series Finale
Jan 17, 2013
by Natalie Abrams
In the final part of our farewell to Fringe, producers and cast discuss the episode that took Fox's sci-fi series in an entirely new direction: into the future. The series has always been known for its offbeat 19th episode, but its final one took the viewers on an adventure to Observer-occupied 2036, in which Peter, Astrid and Walter were freed from amber by Peter and Olivia's grown-up daughter Etta. In the race to the series finale, what's left of the team will attempt to reset time in hopes of ridding the world of Observers...

TVGuide.com talked to stars John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop), Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop), Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham), Jasika Nicole (Astrid Farnsworth), Lance Reddick (Phillip Broyles), Blair Brown (Nina Sharp), Seth Gabel (Lincoln Lee), series co-creator J.J. Abrams, executive producers J.H Wyman and Bryan Burk, Warner Bros. President Peter Roth and Fox's Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly about the bumpy road to the series finale. ... TV Guide: he family-like bond between the cast helped to create a lot of fond memories over the years.
Nicole: "Most of my fondest memories involve laughing with my castmates on set, whether it's because John Noble is being hilariously inappropriate or because I am trying to make Lance break character in a scene."
Reddick: "The moment that stands out for me was a prank. I think it was the first discovery of the typewriter, where they send the messages back and forth to the other universe. Walter's always pulling out food. There's this scene where we discover this backroom of the store. In the scene, Walter pulls out a cookie and starts eating it while he's examining this device. In between takes, Josh said we should all pull out cookies during the next take and start eating them. As Walter is bending over, me and Josh and Anna, we all pulled out cookies and bent over the typewriter and looked intently as we started chewing on our cookies and John Noble lost it. None of the crew knew we were going to do it either. We just laughed and laughed and laughed. It was just one of those moments that for me epitomizes the relationship that we all shared over these five years."
Jackson: "Never ad-lib eating Red Vines. You may be stuck with it for five years."
Nicole: "One memory I have that takes the cake is when I was doing one of my scenes with my doppelgänger. My stand-in, whose name is Nicole, we were filming the scene where I was playing alt-Astrid and explaining to Astrid how my father passed away and was now buried in the ground. In the middle of alt-Astrid's speech as she is crying, tears started streaming down Nicole's face too. It was an incredibly sincere and special moment that we shared, and the success of those emotional Astrid scenes are owed in part to Nicole being so present and listening and responding honestly to the moments. It was such a sweet experience, but we never talked about it with each other. It was just this special bubble we existed in for a short while we mirrored each other."
Noble: "I'll never forget the episode when Astrid and alt-Astrid played some scenes together. It was so beautiful to be in the room with Jasika when that happened and the feeling of support that every company member gave her. It was so touching. Those are the special moments I'll never forget."
Nicole: "Walter never gets her name right. He knows what her name is. He just does it to mess with her."
Gabel: "I really enjoyed the episode where Peter and Lincoln cross universes together and infiltrate the DOD on the other side. We have a bit of a bromance where we're causing trouble and having a lot of fun. I felt like it was a really fun episode to do."
Nicole: "A drinking game was drink every time Astrid's on screen but doesn't say something, and you would be trashed by the end of the episode."
Noble: "I was particularly proud of where Walter crossed over to the other side to steal the other Peter. It was a critical episode. I mean, it was a wonderful episode to act in. I had to go into flashbacks for that, so I had to play back in 1980. So I got to play Walter as he was before he lost his mind, when he was still married and of course, Orla Brady was brilliant as the wife. Also, it explained to the audience exactly what this whole issue was about, the fact that this man, in his grief and his hubris, shattered the laws of the universe. The whole thing about Fringe is we've been paying back ever since because of that. That's the whole story! That episode was probably the most fun as an actor."
Jackson: "For whatever reason we had never taken a crew photo, so on the second-to-last night I asked [set photographer] Liane Hentscher if she would take one. Wyman gave his blessing and at the end of the very last night, just before the very last shot, after nearly 20 hours at work and having the sun come up, our now tired/ragged/ecstatic crew took their first and last photo together. The rest is all just a blur..."

... Q) Looking at characters this season, obviously they’re taking some major character twists and turns, what are maybe some of the new acting challenges perhaps you guys found with each of your respective roles this year?
Kristen: "I mean, there’s, like every episode always brings with it, sort of, like a new set of challenges. I don’t know. I feel like this year Nora was, like, I don’t - more subdued and I don’t know. I mean, I feel like every day is, like, new challenges - I don’t know specifically sort of anything stood out this year as being particularly more difficult or - I don’t know."
Sam: "No, you dealing with Leah was a new kind of - new thing I guess, right?"
Kristen: "Yes, but, like, just a new threat to the character. I mean, as an actor, I don’t know if it was more challeng- you know what I mean?"
Sam: "I would say for me, like we touched on it a little bit earlier but not - you know, for a little bit, I’d become not a werewolf anyway and so for me, like, it was honestly of just a feeling of kind of being left out, feeling left out, you know, of the party. And that was kind of weird and totally unexpected, by the way. I did not expect to feel that way. It was such a surprise to me when I read initially and it didn’t really hit me until we were on set shooting and I was, like, oh, this is kind of weird, like, I’m not one of the gang anymore. So that was kind of an interesting different challenge I guess. But once again, I mean, like - much like Kristen, I am a really talented natural actor."
Kristen: Nora has her challenges. I just - maybe like for me, I guess I was in more so obviously, like, longer days but I love - but again, like, I love my job, this is one of my favorite jobs I ever had so I don’t even mind the long hours.
Sam: "She’s the best too. Having her on set is so much fun. I always want more of Kristen. And, like, whenever, like, even in previous seasons, like, when I watched an episode and she’s not in it, like, it’ll take me a second. It’ll be, like, something’s missing..."

The two-hour Fringe finale airs tonight on Fox in the US at 8pm EST and at the same time on Sky 1 at 1:10 am GMT. SFX – literally – just got off the phone with Joshua Jackson, who plays Peter Bishop, who talked to press about what fans can expect from the explosive finale, what he takes away from his five years as a Bishop and what he thinks will be Fringe’s legacy in sci-fi TV history...
... Q: What is Peter’s place in the end game in the last two hours?
Joshua Jackson: “The first of the two hours [“Liberty”] really deals with Olivia’s story, almost exclusively. It gives us, in a very Fringe-y way, final insight into where she is or has been this season. Nobody other than Olivia really has much a role in that story. In the finale [“An Enemy of Fate”], as much as Walter is called to make a sacrifice, and the gang in general is trying to implement Walter and Donald’s plan, I feel like at least in the script it read pretty fairly spread across all players. Ultimately, Peter’s role has always been to be the dutiful son, husband and father. It plays out in a really specific way. Everybody is pretty engaged in the finale...”

MTV GEEK: Joshua Jackson Talks The 'Fringe' Finale
January 18, 2013
by Charles Webb
"The hardest thing to walk away from is the camraderie of the company," Jackson tells us at the start of the call, echoing the sentiment of co-star John Noble. Jackson, whose Peter Bishop has gone from conman, to would-be savior of two universes, to future freedom fighter will be seeing his character's journey coming to an end in tonight's two-part series finale of "Fringe."
Jackson pointed to the relationship between Walter and Peter and Peter's desire to become a good son as "an interesting journey to go on." He looked back at the character's arc over the last two seasons, which saw Peter pulled from the timeline, hoping to return to his own, ultimately finding love with this universe's Olivia and caring for his father. It was a curious direction for the series to go at the time, kind of a soft reset of his character's arc where he started out as more or less mercenary in his aims and actions at the beginning of the series, and developing connections with Olivia and Walter. A lot of season four was about his character attempting to get back to his universe, no matter the cost. But the Peter in season four wasn't the Peter at the beginning of the series: no longer selfish, he couldn't abandon the people he cared for and made the decision to remain in this timeline...

NATURE - PBS VIDEO: 'COLD WARRIORS: WOLVES AND BUFFALO' EPISODE TRAILER - AIRS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2013 AT 8/7C
For thousands of years, wolves have hunted buffalo across the vast North American plains. Although westward settlement of the continent saw the virtual extinction of these vast herds and their eternal predators, this ancient relationship was not lost altogether.
On the northern edge of the continent's central plains, in a place named Wood Buffalo National Park [Canada], buffalo and wolves still engage in epic life and death dramas. By following one pack of wolves, wildlife filmmaker Jeff Turner captures how these two animal species live together in what seems like a forgotten corner of the world.
"Cold Warriors: Wolves and Buffalo" premieres Wednesday, February 13 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 31st season of Nature.

Fringe ends, and just under three million voices cry out in anguish

TOP PICK
Fringe
(Fox, 9 p.m., Friday)
After five seasons, 100 episodes (exactly), and almost five years on the air, Fringe is ending as it lived: trying to save the world, getting up in everybody’s business, and garnering what will surely be low ratings. Still, if you’re one of the few who stuck with this all the way to the end, you’re either wildly excited for the end of what’s been a thrilling season, or you’re pretty sure everything is just going to disappoint you. And guess what! Both of those things are probably going to be self-fulfilling prophecies! Noel Murray takes a Sundance break to see how everything wraps up.

... FRINGE
Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET
SERIES FINALE: Maybe, when tonight’s two-hour finale is over, everything in the Fringe universe – sorry, the Fringe universes – will make perfect sense. Maybe not. But it’s been quite an amazing trip. And my guess is that before it’s all over, at least one of the characters who died this season will be resurrected in an altered, happier-ending timeline. If not in this TV universe, then somewhere...

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows
... Fringe
8-10 PM FOX, SERIES FINALE
Over five topsy-turvy seasons, Fringe pursued an inspiring vision for sci-fi drama by taking as its subject the rehumanization of an increasingly tech-crazed robo-soulless world. The series finale turns this theme into apocalyptic conflict, as Olivia (Anna Torv), Peter (Joshua Jackson), and Walter (John Noble) try to save humankind from an oppressive plague of emotionally challenged supermen known as the Observers, not by exterminating these pasty-faced Frankensteins but by convincing them they could be so much more. Thank you, Fringe, for fighting the good geek fight. #FiveSeasonsAndAMovie? Please?

Lost Girl - National Post: Anna Silk Interview

NATIONAL POST: Sci-fi high: The boom in Canadian series that go bump in the night
by Scott Stinson
Jan 17, 2013
There’s always an adjustment period for actors and new roles. Some more than others. Anna Silk, for example, the Fredericton-born star of Lost Girl, was naturally thrilled to have won the part of Bo, the series protagonist. But quite early on, “she finds out she’s part of a Fae underworld and a succubus.”
A succubus being, of course, someone who feeds off the sexual energy of others. And can unfortunately kill them while doing so...
“It was quite a learning curve,” Silk says, chuckling a little at the memory. But she also remembers the parallel between her character and her job. “Getting the role, being the lead, everything was so shiny and new,” she says, “that made me feel a bit insecure.”
“But then one day there was a scene in which Bo was uncertain and hesitant about these new powers she discovered, and I realized that’s where I should be in terms of the acting. I should embrace that...”
Lost Girl season three airs Monday at 10/9C on Syfy. CLICK HERE TO VIEW A VIDEO SNEAK PEEK OF 'SUBTERRFAENEAN' AIRING JANUARY 21, 2013.
