Torchwood: Miracle Day - Collider: Russell T. Davies Interview

Executive Producer Russell T. Davies Interview TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY
by Christina Radish Posted: January 16th, 2011
In July 2011, Starz will be bringing the 4th season of the popular BBC series Torchwood to a new global audience. Exposing new viewers to the show and expanding the world to increase its international reach means a bigger story and new cast members (including Mekhi Phifer and Bill Pullman) will be joining old favorites.
Subtitled Miracle Day, the story follows what would happen if, one day, people ceased to die, and explores what that sort of overnight population boom might mean for individuals all across the world. This obviously unnatural event that threatens the human race is something that, of course, only the secret Torchwood team – which includes Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) – can attempt to resolve.
During the Starz portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, creator/show runner/executive producer Russell T. Davies talked about this provocative new premise, the process of expanding the show’s audience, what it’s been like transitioning to the States, and promises that the 10-episode series will be quite shocking...
... Question: What can you say about the provocative premise of the upcoming season?
RUSSELL T. DAVIES: This has been working under the working title of The New World, but that was a secret title to hide the real title, which is now Torchwood: Miracle Day. The premise is that a miracle happens to the world. It’s as simple as, one day on Earth, no one dies. Not a single person on Earth dies. The next day, no one dies. And the next day, no one dies. And on and on and on.
By the sixth day, the old stay old and keep getting older, and the dying keep dying, but no one quite dies. The possibility of death ceases to exist. That’s great news for some people, but globally it becomes a problem. That’s what the whole show is about. It’s an instant overnight population boom where, suddenly, the Earth relies on people dying. That’s how the whole system works. So, suddenly, you’ve got a crisis affecting everyone on the planet. That’s where the Torchwood team and our brand-new characters come in...

Timothy Olyphant Interview JUSTIFIED Season Two; Says He Is NOT Testing for ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER
by Christina Radish Posted: January 16th, 2011
The popular FX drama Justified, based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard, returns for a second season starting on February 9th. Fresh off the epic gun battle that concluded the first season, Season 2 finds Bo Crowder (M.C. Gainey) dead and the Crowder family’s criminal grip on Harlan County broken. Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) must now face off against the criminal organizations that are looking to fill the void, and he finds himself entangled, once again, with Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins).
During the FX portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, show star Timothy Olyphant talked about how good it feels to receive the praise of Elmore Leonard, who created this complex character, how much he enjoys everything about his work on Justified, his new title as a producer, and how much he thinks the series has grown in Season 2. He also talked about the experience of working on I Am Number Four, due out in theaters on February 18th, and said that contrary to previously announced reports, he is not testing for the lead role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter...
... Were you a producer on Season 1, or is that new for Season 2?
OLYPHANT: No, I just pretended to be one. Now, they’ve created a monster. It’s really fun.
How has it changed things, now that you’re a producer?
OLYPHANT: There’s very little that I’m doing this year that I didn’t do last year. If anything, we just have a deeper understanding of one another, especially (executive producer/writer) Graham [Yost] and I, and the collaboration. We had an opportunity, this time, to spend some time together and have conversations, prior to the season beginning. He just knew what to expect, and vice versa, so it really helped. When I saw the first three episodes, I saw the result of that, and I’m very proud of it and pleased with it...

'The Cape': Summer Glau sheds some light on Orwell
By Rick Porter January 16, 2011
After playing a psychologically unstable girl in "Firefly" and "Serenity" and a cyborg in "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Summer Glau is happy to be playing a TV character who has normal human emotions.
"I love it. I love it," Glau says with a laugh. But even so, her character on NBC's new series "The Cape," the corruption-fighting blogger Orwell, isn't exactly an open book.
"She's emoting in a complicated way because she doesn't want anyone to understand her," Glau tells Zap2it. "If anyone found out who she was, it could mean death for her. So I feel like I'm emoting quite a bit, but it's in a very blurry way."
We chatted with Glau earlier this week about Orwell's backstory, her relationship with The Cape/Vince Faraday (David Lyons) and the physical aspects of working on the show...
