Once Upon A Time - Blog Critics: Jane Espenson Interview

BLOG CRITICS: Reinventing Fairy Tales: An Interview with Once Upon a Time's Jane Espenson
Dec 16, 2011
by Barbara Barnett
Jane Espenson is well known to fans of the science fiction and fantasy television genre. A 20-year veteran television writer and producer, she has written for some of the best, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Torchwood. She is also the co-creator and executive producer of Husbands, viewable at http://husbandstheseries.com. Currently Ms. Espenson is a writer/producer for the new hit series Once Upon a Time, which airs Sunday nights on ABC.
She wrote the recently aired, “A Still Small Voice,” which explores Jiminy Cricket's (Raphael Sbarge) backstory, and she’s also written the upcoming “Desperate Souls.” I last interviewed Ms. Espenson just before the series premiered back in October, and she was kind enough to chat with me again, in advance of her latest episode, airing just after the show comes out of its brief winter hiatus...
[NOTE: Once Upon A Time's 'Desperate Souls' airs Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 8/7C on ABC.]
... Q: I'm really excited to see your next episode, which, I understand reveals more about Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle).
Jane Espenson: "Episode 8 is called "Desperate Souls," and it does reveal more about Rumple. Lots more. You'll learn about where he comes from and what drives him. It's also got a fun Storybrooke story where we see more of how Emma is going to fit into this wonderful insular strange little town..."
... Q: I read a poll the other day on some fansite, and interestingly Rumpelstiltskin was far in the lead as favorite character. He's certainly my favorite character, but I'm not sure why that is. I don't usually find myself drawn to "villains," but is Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold a real villain? After all, he did bring Henry to Storybrooke (and helped Snow White and the Prince save their baby).
Jane Espenson: "We are fortunate to have two amazing villains in The Evil Queen/Regina and Rumple. And I really love how both of them can justify their own actions. Regina has a yet-to-be-revealed beef against Snow, and you're going to learn a lot more about the source of Rumple's dark energy soon. And, yes, you're onto something. Rumple's agenda is very complex. Look not just to episode 8, but to episode 12 and beyond to learn more about it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's evil or not..."

GRIMM - TV GUIDE: David Giuntoli Video Interview
David Giuntoli may play homicide detective Nick Burkhardt in NBC's fairy tale-tinged crime procedural Grimm, but in real life, he's not that stoic when faced with corpses — especially the fake ones used on the series.
"I'm not usually easily disturbed, but I've walked on the set and been absolutely disgusted to my core," he tells TVGuide.com. "I'll always remember where I was when I saw this specific crime scene [in 'Danse Macabre']. There were rats crawling out of the stomach, out of the mouth of a corpse. The corpses, the prosthetics are so real that until you touch them, your brain doesn't understand that it's fake. It's terrifying. There's a lot of eating lunch in my trailer far, far away from the morgue set..."
Grimm airs Fridays at 9/8C on NBC. NEW episodes return January 6, 2012 with 'Of Mouse and Man.'

SMASHING INTERVIEWS MAGAZINE: Stephen Lang Interview: ‘Avatar’ Star on His Current Role in the FOX Sci-Fi Series ‘Terra Nova’
December 15, 2011
by Melissa Parker
Versatile actor Stephen Lang began his formidable career in theatre, but is well known for his portrayal of Colonel Miles Quaritch in the 2009 epic science fiction film Avatar, written and directed by James Cameron. The film became the first film to gross more than $2 billion and stands as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
The busy actor’s most recent role is Commander Nathaniel Taylor in the FOX science fiction drama Terra Nova. The two-hour season finale air[ed] Monday, December 19, 2011. FOX has deferred a decision on whether or not the series returns for a second season until at least January 2012...
... Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): Stephen, I enjoy your performances in military roles as well. Do you feel a heavy responsibility while playing such crucial characters in American History?
Stephen Lang: "You bet! I always feel there is a special responsibility that you have. Of course, in anything you do, whether its Shakespeare or Chekhov, you have a responsibility to the integrity of the character. But, when you’re playing Stonewall Jackson, George Pickett, or Babe Ruth, you have a responsibility to the integrity of history as well. You really need to be mindful of that and to represent in a very accurate way. So, yeah, I do feel it.
It’s a pleasure to do that kind of research and to try to lift these guys from the pages of history and try to make them live and breathe. It’s a way of preserving our own heritage. I really like doing the characters. I’m a history fan anyway. I love history..."

THE BIG BANG THEORY - POP CANDY: A chat with ... actress Mayim Bialik
Dec 22, 2011
By Whitney Matheson
There are many things to love about The Big Bang Theory -- Sheldon's quips, Howard's belt buckles -- but in 2011 actress Mayim Bialik really shone in her growing role as Sheldon's special someone, Amy Farrah Fowler.
In real life, Bialik is a busy mother with a neuroscience degree who also writes (in fact, she has a parenting book out in March). I caught up with her to talk about the future of Amy and how Big Bang has changed her life...
Mayim Bialik and Johnny Galecki from The Big Bang Theory
... Q: What has working on The Big Bang Theory taught you?
The industry has changed a lot in the 25 years since I've done sitcoms. It's a lot different being an adult with a very different perspective.
Mayim Bialik: "But I think ... I love my craft. And it sounds so pretentious, but I don't really care what it looks like when you watch it on TV -- that's not my job. My job is to create all week and to play with words and to make people laugh, and sometimes to make people cry. That's the beauty of it. And it's a real gift to work with somebody like Jim (Parsons), you know? He really loves his craft that way and can really bring out so much in me as an actor..."
The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8/7C on CBS and returns with NEW episodes on January 12, 2012 with 'The Shiny Trinket Maneuver.'

The Fades - BBC America Video: NEW Series Trailer Premieres Jan 14 '12
Source: BBC America
THE FADES - BBC AMERICA VIDEO: NEW SERIES TRAILER - PREMIERES SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012
Written by Jack Thorne (“Skins,” “This Is England ’86,” “Shameless”), “The Fades” is a coming-of-age fantasy drama showcasing the supernatural skills of a reluctant teenager named Paul (as played by Iain De Caestecker, formerly of “Coronation Street”). His best friend, Mac (Daniel Kaluuya, “Johnny English Reborn,” “Skins”), as well as his therapist, are completely stunned by the apocalyptic dreams that he’s been having. His twin sister Anna (Lily Loveless, “Skins”) is also unsympathetic of his socially awkward behavior.
As if things aren’t difficult enough, Paul is seeing the spirits of the dead (known as Fades) all around him. An embittered Fade finds a way to break the barrier between the dead and the living, aiming its vengeance at Paul, Mac and their loved ones.
Soon the fate of humanity rests in the hands of the two best friends, who already have enough trouble getting through the day in one piece, let alone saving the world.
Thorne says of the show: “What makes ‘The Fades’ different is that it is a fantasy show rather than a science fiction show. It’s about fairly ordinary people, none of these people act or behave like they’re superheroes. “The Fades” is about the world itself being an extraordinary thing and how you battle it. This old school fantasy element combined with some pretty original characters – I hope is what will make people want to watch.”
Natalie Dormer (“The Tudors,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”), Joe Dempsie (“Game of Thrones,” “Skins”), Tom Ellis (“Miranda,” “Merlin”), Sophie Wu (“Kick-Ass”) and Johnny Harris (“This Is England ’86,” “Spartacus”) also have recurring spots in the six-part series.
“The Fades” premieres Saturday, January 14 at 9/8c as part of of BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday.

Merlin - Spinoff Online: Colin Morgan Interview

SPINOFF ONLINE: Colin Morgan’s Boy Wizard Grows Up, and Grows Wiser, on Merlin
Thursday, December 22nd, 2011
by Jeffrey Renaud
Merlin returns to Syfy for a fourth season on Jan. 6, and while Colin Morgan admits his title character remains somewhat awkward as he continues his path to becoming the greatest wizard of them all, Merlin is becoming less naïve, more grounded and a lot wiser.
Relatively unknown when he was cast as Merlin in 2008, the 25-year-old Irish actor made a name for himself with roles at iconic English theaters like the Young Vic (Vernon God Little) and the Old Vic (Todo sobre mi madre).
Now, after four-plus years on the BBC fantasy series, Morgan says he continues to learn from Season 4 guest stars like Phil Davis (Vera Drake), Gemma Jones (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) and James Callis (Battlestar Galactica)...
... Q: I spoke with Katie [McGrath] yesterday, and she teased that the two of you really get after one another in Season 4. Care to corroborate the story?
Colin Morgan: "Yes, there is a big connection between Merlin and Morgana this series, and it’s a very interesting one because Morgana learns of this old sorcerer called Emrys, who is actually Merlin because Merlin can now transform into older wizards. And that’s the form that she recognizes as her doom, as her downfall, as her death. But Merlin doesn’t realize this. And neither does Morgana, so she has this huge fear and this huge mission to find out who this Emrys is and to destroy him, but again, she doesn’t know that Emrys is Merlin. It’s a big, big part of this series, and it’s also kind of a subplot to what’s going on.
Merlin and Morgana certainly meet head-to-head on several occasions throughout the series, too. And having gone through what they’ve gone through – Merlin trying to show Morgana the right path and her very much taking the wrong path – there’s really no love between them anymore. Whatsoever..."

SPINOFF ONLINE: Merlin’s Katie McGrath Channels ‘Goth Jessica Rabbit’ as Morgana
Monday, December 19th
by Jeffrey Renaud
Merlin returns to Syfy for a fourth season Jan. 6, and no one is more excited than Katie McGrath.
While the 26-year-old Irish actress has loved playing Princess Morgana for the past three seasons of the international hit series, she tells Spinoff Online she originally signed on for the role because she wanted to play the character as the “bad-ass” queen of Camelot, wreaking havoc on the lives of Merlin, Arthur, Gwen and anyone else who stands in her way. And that’s exactly where we are when the new season begins with the two-part episode “The Darkest Hour.”
McGrath also teases that she has more screen time with Colin Morgan, who plays the title character, and sheds some light on the darkness growing within Morgana...
... Q: Season 4 opens with a two-part, Lord of the Rings-style epic fantasy battle. Morgana has enjoyed lots of great interpersonal character moments the last three seasons, but is it fun to have the character let loose on this scale?
Katie McGrath: "It’s unbelievable. We started out as this little show in Cardiff with four people making this little thing that nobody knew about that was about magic. And for it now to be four seasons later and for BBC and everybody to put so much into it and show so much faith and build these huge-scale sets for us, you cast your mind back to the first day on set and see how far we’ve come you realize what an achievement it is. And just how hard everybody has worked. And how special it is to be a part of something like that. It’s a humbling moment but at the same time, it’s absolutely brilliant to be a queen with her own army..."

WILLIAM POWELL - 'THE THIN MAN' MOVIE MARATHON - TCM VIDEO: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2011
8:00 PM The Thin Man (1934)
A husband-and-wife detective team takes on the search for a missing inventor and almost get killed for their efforts.
Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) investigate the disappearance of an inventor in this classic blend of laughs and suspense which marked the first pairing of what was to become one of the movies' great romantic teams.
Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Maureen O'Sullivan, Nat Pendleton, Minna Gombell, Porter Hall, Henry Wadsworth, William Henry, Harold Huber and Cesar Romero.
9:45 PM After The Thin Man (1936)
Married sleuths Nick and Nora Charles try to clear Nora's cousin of a murder charge.
Delightful second entry in the series finds the urbane Charleses in San Francisco and, when not inordinately inebriated, investigating murder charges brought against Loy's unstable cousin (Elissa Landi). Slightly overlong but first rate, with a truly surprising culprit.
Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, James Stewart, Elissa Landi, Joseph Calleia, Jessie Ralph, Alan Marshal, Teddy Hart, Sam Levene, Penny Singleton and Paul Fix.
11:45 PM Another Thin Man (1939)
Not even the joys of parenthood can stop married sleuths Nick and Nora Charles from investigating a murder on a Long Island estate.
Murder strikes at a Long Island estate and the screen's favorite lush-detective couple (along with Asta and newborn son Nick, Jr) move in to solve it, although motherhood has slowed down Nora's drinking a bit. Enjoyable third entry in the series and the last to be based on a Dashiell Hammett story.
Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Virginia Grey, Otto Kruger, C. Aubrey Smith, Ruth Hussey, Nat Pendleton, Patric Knowles, Tom Neal, Phyllis Gordon, Sheldon Leonard and Marjorie Main.
1:45 AM Shadow Of The Thin Man (1941)
High society sleuths Nick and Nora Charles run into a variety of shady characters while investigating a race-track murder.
Nick and Nora probe murder at a race track and run into the usual assortment of shady characters in this agreeable fourth entry in the series, notable for famed future acting teacher Stella Adler in a rare film role (as a gambler's moll).
Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Barry Nelson, Donna Reed, Sam Levene, Alan Baxter, Henry O'Neill, Richard Hall and Stella Adler.
3:30 AM The Thin Man Goes Home (1945)
On a trip to visit his parents, detective Nick Charles gets mixed up in a murder investigation.
Nick takes the family on a vacation to Sycamore Springs to visit his parents, but naturally winds up embroiled in a murder case. Leisurely entry, with even more comedy than usual.
