CHUCK - HIT FIX: Interview: 'Chuck' star Zachary Levi on Hulu, ratings and Comic-Con
Winning the Best in Show poll was nice, but renewal still shaky
By Alan Sepinwall
Monday, Apr 4, 2011
"Chuck" star Zachary Levi has always had a deep and abiding love for the show's fans. During the Subway campaign to save the show at the end of season 2, Levi led a group of several hundred fans to a local Subway. When Fienberg and I somehow failed to get a single audience question in at the last San Diego Comic-Con "Chuck" panel, the only person more upset than the two of us was Levi, because he loves hearing from the fans and interacting with them.
So a few hours after it was announced that "Chuck" had won Hulu's Best in Show fan tournament, I got on the phone with Levi to get his reaction to the news, and also to gauge his feelings about where the show stands in terms of renewal. (A few months ago, when the show was consistently averaging a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 year-old demographic, I thought it was a lock to come back. These days, it's averaging about a 1.7, putting the show once again on the bubble.) During a break from filming this season's 23rd episode, Levi had mixed emotions about the result, given the show's familiar precarious position, and we talked about where things stand, what he's enjoyed about doing this latest season, and what his Comic-Con plans are, whether or not renewal comes...
... Q: So this late into the season, with the show again not a lock to come back, how are you feeling?
Zachary Levi: "I think everyone's attitude is good, and not necessarily because we're optimistic about a pickup, but we're just choosing not to be negative, and come to work and appreciate your cast and crew and try to have as much fun as possible. And we know that however many people watch these episodes, even if they are the last, they mean a lot to those people. And we're coming to the end of a really long season. It's the longest we've ever done in terms of episode count. The second season we still had 8-day (production) schedules, that got cut down for the third season, so it's maybe the same number of days, but this is more episodes. It's nine months of 14-hour days and not seeing your friends and family for extended periods of time. While we don't know what the future holds, we know that we've worked hard, and try to do the best we can by our fanbase, and the rest is in God's hands, and it always has been. every season it's always been the same situation: will they or won't they? Maybe it mirrors Chuck and Sarah's relationship..."

TV GUIDE: Roush Review: Hackers, Slackers, Chefs — And a Fantastic Justified
Apr 6, 2011
by Matt Roush
... And finally, saving the best for last: You can't do better than tonight's exceptionally eventful episode of FX's Justified (10/9c), which has never been better. So much happens in this hour, most of the activity percolating around Mags Bennett, the lethal mountain matriarch who's not about to roll over for the coal company trying to sully the patch of land she and her degenerate sons rule over. Margo Martindale is on everyone's "give her an Emmy" list for her tremendously entertaining and often chilling portrayal of this literally larger than life character, who last week took over a town meeting and invited her Kentucky community to her place for a "whoop-dee-doo."
That's where tonight's episode picks up and takes off, with Mags in her element as Martindale exhibits an awesome range. She is tender and loving with her precious ward Loretta (the impressive Kaitlin Dever), whose hapless father Mags had killed in the season opener. With her unruly boys, including the twitchy Dickie (Jeremy Davies) and the bear-like Coover (Brad William Henke), she is controlling to a potentially tragic fault. With everyone else, she is a fearsome force of nature to be reckoned and negotiated with. She drives a mean bargain, but we also learn she can also carry a mean tune.
These mountain folk are smarter and more cunning than they look, and an episode like this confirms Justified's standing as one of the smartest, most suspensefully surprising and gratifying series on TV. The Peabodys made a great call last week by honoring this show. Even Mags would approve.

TV GUIDE: Welcome Back, Chloe: Allison Mack Talks About Returning to Smallville One Last Time
Apr 6, 2011
by Rich Sands
Smallville's passionate fans aren't the only ones having a hard time saying goodbye to the series, which ends its 10-year run on Friday, May 13. Allison Mack, who plays Chloe Sullivan, Clark Kent's longtime-friend-turned-superhero-computer-whiz, decided she couldn't walk away without one final appearance. A series regular for the show's first nine years, Mack signed on for just five episodes this season and had wrapped up that commitment in February. Now in New York City, where she recently finished a run in the Off Broadway play Apple Cove, Mack talked to TV Guide Magazine about her decision to go back one last time, her fervent fans and the next chapter in her life...
... TV Guide Magazine: How do you feel about her friendship with Clark [Tom Welling]? They've gone through so much together, but there has definitely been a strain on their relationship the last couple of years.
Mack: "They're best friends. And the longer you know someone, the more of their nasty parts and their beautiful parts you get to see. And I think you don't have a true friendship or a true relationship until you've survived some sort of a fight at some point. I think the fact that Chloe and Clark have been through so many ups and downs together — hated each other, but loved each other the whole way — just means that their relationship is incredibly strong and will withstand anything..."
For more on Smallville, pick up the April 11 issue of TV Guide Magazine, on newsstands Thursday.
NEW episode of Smallville, "Kent," airs Friday, April 15, 2011 at 8/7 on The CW.
SCIFI AND TV TALK: Doctor Who's Steven Moffat Talks Season Six
After taking over the reins on Doctor Who last year, series lead writer/executive producer Steven Moffat has certainly been kept busy. In a BBC America Press Q & A, he has answered seven quick fire questions on what to look out for when the show's sixth season premieres April 23rd @ 9:00 p.m. EST on BBC America...
... Q: How has this season evolved from last year?
STEVEN MOFFAT - Well we’ve moved through the funfair a bit – we’ve done the rollercoaster, now we’re on the ghost train. Last year, in a way, was all about saying, don’t worry, it’s still him, it’s still the same show, nothing’s really been lost. Losing a leading man like David Tennant (The 10th Doctor) is seismic – unless you gain a leading man like Matt Smith. It’s been the biggest joy to see him stride in and just claim that TARDIS for his own. But now he’s really here, and the part is his, and the bow tie is cool, he’s ready to lead us places we didn’t know existed. Last year we reassured you – this year, to hell with that, we’re going to worry the hell out of you. How well do we really know that man, or what he’s capable of? We’re putting the Who? back in the Doctor...
