LOS ANGELES TIMES SHOW TRACKER: Lou Diamond Phillips still standing and delivering
The veteran actor's new series on A&E, 'Longmire,' has been well received, as has his work as host on the Military Channel's 'An Officer and a Movie.'
By Liesl Bradner
July 22, 2012
Lou Diamond Phillips is having a very good year. It's long overdue. In the 25 years since he burst onto the big screen as singer Ritchie Valens in "La Bamba," LDP (as he is often referred to) has been working nonstop, though sometimes a bit under the radar.
But in January, his independent film "Filly Brown"had its premiere to rave reviews at the Sundance film festival. A guest appearance as a hot-headed cop on"Southland" left the door open for future episodes, and a hosting gig on the Military Channel's "An Officer and a Movie" propelled the little cable channel that began in 2005 to its best quarter ever.
Last month saw the premiere of Phillips' new series, "Longmire," a well-received drama that pulled in 4.5 million viewers for A&E...
... "The last time I remember feeling quite this overflowing with good fortune was in 1996-97 with 'Courage Under Fire' and 'The King and I' on Broadway," said Phillips on a recent overcast morning at a downtown L.A. cafe. The death of Andy Griffith that day had him reflecting on an actor "who embodied American values. He was your neighbor, your uncle, your best friend." Much like the central character in "Longmire," Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, played by Robert Taylor.
"'Longmire' is a throwback to that kind of storytelling and those kind of characters," says Phillips. "It's not about the procedures or the science..."
Longmire airs Sunday at 10/9C on A&E TV.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Alphas' Warren Christie - Comfort Zone
by Steve Eramo
07/21/2012
It is smokin’ today on the set Syfy’s Alphas. Really, it is. The show’s cast and crew are on-location in the woods of Ancaster, Ontario filming scenes for the season two story Alphaville, and the SFX (special effects) team is setting the mood by pumping smoke in and around the trees and nearby campsite.
A smiling Warren Christie emerges from a huge cloud of smoke and takes a break in between scenes for a chat. In the first season one Alphas, his character of Cameron Hicks - whose Alphas ability of Hyperkinesis gives him superhuman reflexes, accuracy and timing – was used as a pawn to commit a murder. He subsequently helped clear his name and catch the rogue Alpha behind the assassination plot. In doing so, Cameron became a part of Dr. Lee Rosen’s Alphas team.
Although initially reluctant, he slowly began to settle into his new line of work, but in the season finale, his world and that of his teammates was turned upside-down when Rosen made the existence of Alphas public. In season two, it looks at first to be a bit of an uphill battle for our heroes, and Christie is pleased to be back fighting on the front lines.
“We’re all really proud of the last few season one episodes and how they ramped up things,” says the actor. “I thought last year’s finale ended with such a bang, and everyone was very excited to get back to work this season. One of the things I think the writers did a great job with is that they spent the first season creating this Alphas world and then just blew it all up in the finale with the bombshell that Rosen [David Strathairn] drops.
“We were told a little bit about where things were headed story-wise, which gave us a lot to play with as far as where we would be picking things up for season two. It has to do mainly with the fallout from Rosen outing the Alphas. So when our little family came back together again this year, we all pretty much hit the ground running. We had a great script [Wake-Up Call] to start off season two with, and everybody drove right in. It was like we never left...
Alphas season two premieres Monday, July 23, 2012 at 10/9C on Syfy.
Alphas season two cast includes includes David Strathairn, Ryan Cartwright, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Laura Mennell, Erin Way and Malik Yoba.
