... Not available for preview, but very likely to pop in the ratings, USA Network's Certain Prey (9/8c) could provide for NCIS star Mark Harmon what the Jesse Stone movies have been for Tom Selleck: a lucrative new franchise. Based on the best-selling series of novels by John Sandford, Prey casts Harmon as Lucas Davenport, Minneapolis' maverick deputy police chief, tracking the bloody murder spree of two deadly women. Given the popularity of TV procedurals in general, and the ubiquity of NCIS repeats on USA's schedule, this seems as close to a certain hit as you could imagine...

Boasting the weekend's most impressive cast, the Masterpiece Contemporary drama Page Eight (PBS, check local schedules) stars the witty Bill Nighy as a melancholy long-time analyst in British Intelligence who weighs his career, his allegiances and his bond with an enigmatic neighbor (Rachel Weisz), when he's presented with a damning document implicating the prime minister (Ralph Fiennes) in keeping secrets with the U.S. regarding torture. This has the feel of top-shelf John le Carre-style literature, written with droll cynicism by David Hare and exquisitely acted, with luminaries including Judy Davis and Michael Gambon in the supporting cast. A quietly absorbing elegy for old-school spooks, Page Eight bristles with jazzy intelligence...

... FRIDAY
Pick of the night: The return of Fox's Fringe (9/8c) was delayed a week by the thrilling Game 7 finish of the World Series, but the episode manages to hit an emotionally fraught home run, with Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) finally back in the flesh, a "scientific anomaly" (Walter's words) confounding a Fringe team that no longer recognizes him. "If I'm not supposed to be here, than how am I back?" Peter wonders, and that's an excellent question for all of us to ponder. But first, the team must deal with another of those pesky shape-shifters with the creepy see-through skin, targeting former Massive Dynamics scientist Malcolm Truss (Arye Gross), a specialist in cellular regeneration and replication.
As Walter (the wonderful John Noble) looks into the eyes of the man who could be the son he lost 25 years ago, destroying two worlds in the process, and Malcolm considers the effects of his own experiments, we are reminded again of William Bell's cautionary philosophy: "Some things are not ours to tamper with. Some things are God's." If that's not classic sci-fi, I don't know what is.

HELL ON WHEELS - TV GUIDE: Critic's Guide to Weekend TV: Hell on Wheels, Fringe, Homeland, and More!
Nov 4, 2011
by Matt Roush
Describing Hell on Wheels as "Revenge in the mud" makes it sound a lot more enjoyable than it is. AMC's sprawling but heavy-handed attempt to revive and redefine the Western (a newly hot TV-development trend) is solemn business indeed, with precious little wit or originality. (It premieres Sunday at 10/9c.)
Set in the uncivilized wilds of a post-Civil War America described as an "open wound," this dreary wallow in nihilism seems to fancy itself the second coming of Deadwood, as it depicts a squalid settlement alongside the under-construction Union Pacific Railroad. Hucksters and whores coexist with corrupt politicians and rapacious tycoons, as well as noble natives, self-righteous ex-slaves and sentimental Irish immigrant brothers to keep us all too aware of the show's socially conscious and groaningly obvious agenda. Everyone from antihero to villain seems more a type than a fully fleshed-out or truly colorful character, so we might as well call this one Driftwood.
The grim, morally ambiguous center of Wheels is occupied by grizzled Confederate War vet Cullen Bohannon (a glowering Anson Mount, who could be an ancestor of Person of Interest's whispery Jim Caviezel/Reese). Bohannon is on a crusade of bloody vengeance, seeking out the Union soldiers responsible for the murder of his wife. He finds work with unscrupulous railroad boss "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney, who only lacks mustaches to twirl in his hammy mendacity), a blowhard who actually crows out loud at one point, "What is a drama without a villain? And what is the building of this grand road if not a drama?" And where is his off switch?
Durant also gets to deliver a preposterously over-the-top soliloquy that gives the series its promotional tag line: "Blood will be spilled. Lives will be lost. Fortunes will be made. Men will be ruined." And he goes on: "There will be betrayal, scandal and perfidy of epic proportion, but the lion shall prevail." And that's just in the first episode! (I've seen five so far, and I'd be lying if I said it grew on me.)
AMC enjoyed its first dramatic breakthrough with the Emmy-winning Western miniseries Broken Trail, so it's no surprise to see the network give the genre another crack. But Trail had emotional range and a bittersweet grandeur — and tremendous performances by Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church, among others — whereas Wheels just feels like a hell of a long, glum slog.

BONES - THE DEADBOLT: Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan Interview
by Troy Rogers
Ahead of the Season 7 premiere of Bones on November 3 called "The Memories in the Shallow Grave", executive producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan recently opened up about the new dynamics to come on Bones. Now that Emily Deschanel's Brennan is with child, both she and David Boreanaz's Booth have their hands full in new ways.
In "The Memories in the Shallow Grave", the remains of a woman are found in a paintball field which forces Booth (Boreanaz) and Sweets (John Francis Daley) to interrogate the victim’s husband. When they learn that she suffered from retrograde amnesia but survived a bullet wound, inconsistencies in her medical records uncover a surprising crime linked to her murder.
Prior to the Season 7 premiere of Bones on Fox, TheDeadbolt caught up with Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan to get the scoop on the amnesia aspects of the new episode, new forensics techniques, and how religion will play a part in Booth and Brennan's baby...
... THE DEADBOLT: Will religion be an issue with Booth and Brennan having the baby together, raising it in the church, getting it baptized, everything like that?
HANSON: "Oh, I would say so. Wouldn’t you Stephen?"
NATHAN: "Oh, yes, we’re still playing that. They’re going through all of those huge issues that any couple goes through when they’re having a baby."
HANSON: "And the stakes are raised. They used to have these kind of theoretical arguments about God versus science. Well, now the stakes are raised. It has to do with the upbringing and shaping of a human being. So, it only makes it—that’s what I mean about it being such a gift to us. It’s like, 'Oh wow! This brings a whole new level to the disagreements these two radically different people have about the way the world works and where people fit in the world.'"
NATHAN: "And you will see that in the first episodes and also I can, without telling you anything at all, episode seven is that big time. Yes, they’re dealing with that issue in a pretty intense way, yes..."

THE PASTOR'S WIFE - LIFETIME VIDEO: Movie Trailer Airs Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 8/7C
Based on the true story of Matthew Winkler (Stargate SG-1's Michael Shanks), a beloved minister who, in 2006, was found shot and killed in his Selmer, Tennessee home, his wife and young daughters missing. Authorities soon zeroed in on Matthew's wife, Mary (Rose McGowan), as the prime suspect in the murder. After her capture, the residents of Selmer were left to wonder what would drive Mary to shoot her husband in the back as he slept. Cast includes Rose McGowan, Michael Shanks, Martin Cummins, Susan Hogan, Enid-Raye Adams, Jennifer Copping, Dolores Drake, Claude Duhamel, Lisa Durupt, Lilah Fitzgerald, Carrie Genzel, Eric Keenleyside, Mark McConchie, Julia Sarah Stone and Kyra Zagorsky.

CHUCK - AV CLUB: Co-Creator Chris Fedak Interview
by Joel Keller
November 3, 2011
By any measurement, Chuck never should have survived to its fifth and final season. The perpetually low-rated show about a humble computer geek who becomes a top spy, thanks to a supercomputer that was transferred into his brain, was always on NBC’s cancellation bubble. But thanks to a rabid, loyal fan base, love from television critics and recappers, and a network mired in fourth place, co-creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak were able to explore the geeky world of the Burbank Buy More and the relationship between Chuck (Zachary Levi) and his handler, Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski).
Going into the final season, some things have changed: Chuck and Sarah are married, the team is no longer working for the government, and Chuck’s bumbling best friend Morgan (Joshua Gomez) is the one with the Intersect in his head. Right before the season première aired last Friday (to record-low ratings, of course) Fedak sat down with The A.V. Club to talk about the final season, what fans of the show should expect (more Buy More stories, for instance), and why he digs the idea of Stan Lee as a spy...
Joshua Gomez, Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin
... The A.V. Club: What was your reaction when you got this order for 13 episodes, and the word that it was going to be Chuck’s last year?
Chris Fedak: "Oh, we were jazzed. I think when we’ve come to our season finales, especially for the first four seasons, we’ve always kind of designed them to launch a slightly different version of the show, or a new version of the show, each year. The idea was that if we didn’t come back, people would know deep down that Chuck Bartowski and his team were off saving the world.
You know, I love those endings that promise another show, be it Claude Rains and Humphrey Bogart walking off into the mist in Casablanca—and I’m not making that reference comparing my show to Casablanca—or Batman going after the Joker. It’s that notion [that] there’s great adventures out there. So for us, when we got the pickup, we were excited to start breaking season five, because we liked what it did to the show. We like the fact that Chuck didn’t have the Intersect. We loved the idea that Morgan had the Intersect, his best friend, and now it was [Chuck’s] job to take care of him. Because, you know, it’s been five years; he’s gotten better as a spy, and he’s now ready to be a handler. He’s now ready to be who Sarah Walker was in season one.
The other part of it, too, was I think that we had a lot of fun with Chuck having these abilities and doing those Superman stories, and having him figure out the Intersect 2.0. But it was neat to take it away from him, and I think that’s what we’ve had fun with this year as well, is that the spy world is that much more difficult for him..."

ONCE UPON A TIME - POPTIMAL: Meghan Ory (Red Riding Hood) Interview
November 2, 2011
by Keshaunta Moton
... Recently Poptimal.com had the chance to speak with Meghan Ory, who portrays Red Riding Hood/Ruby on the breakout show. In our interview, the actress tells us how it feels to take on such an iconic character, what’s different about her version of Red, as well as why fans of the series should be excited for what’s to come...
... Ory tells us that she was hooked on the show from the very beginning and eager to be a part of it. “It was my favorite pilot that I read,” she tells. “I loved it… It was just so different and so unique and so well written and interesting and I was like, ‘I don’t care if I’m not in this, I just can’t wait to watch the show.’” But after reading for the pilot last year, and meeting with series creator Edward Kitsis and executive producer Mark Mylod, Ory was signed on to play Little Red. An admitted fan of fantasy (Go, Harry Potter!), Ory tells us that she was excited to get the chance to play Red Riding Hood, a character that she has loved since she was a child.
When asked about how it feels to bring such an iconic character to life, Ory tells us that she finds the opportunity to bring Red to screen “amazing” and enjoys exploring the character.
“You get a lot of room to just play with different things,” Ory says about portraying Red. “You’re still playing a person, so it’s Red Riding Hood which is an iconic character, but she’s still a person. You just need to find those things that make her who she is, that make her real...”
