RED FACTION: ORIGINS - EXAMINER.COM: ADVANCE REVIEW: Syfy searches for redemption with 'Red Faction: Origins'
by Danielle Turchiano
May 27th, 2011
In a move that seems to hand-select and marry elements of Serenity and TRON: Legacy, Syfy's Red Faction: Origins is a tale of mis-representation, second chances, and redemption. Based on the popular video game franchise, "Red Faction," this made-for-TV movie takes the action and imagery to the next level (and fits in between the third and fourth games in the chronology of the story) but makes it even more approachable by following not the gruff rebel who has been cast out by the new society, Alec Mason (Robert Patrick), but instead his clean cut, boy-next-door, likeable but still a bit damaged son, Jake (Brian J. Smith). By begging the question of how much we base our decisions on what we only think to be truths, Red Faction: Origins sets up an extremely relatable existential struggle set on an unbelievable backdrop...
Cast includes Robert Patrick, Stargate Universe's Brian J. Smith, Tamzin Merchant, Kate Vernon, Devon Graye, Gareth David-Lloyd, Danielle Nicolet and Gordon Kennedy.
Premieres Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 9/8C on Syfy.

... Based on the teaser above, the show looks fairly entertaining — even if the band-of-freaks-find-common-cause concept does feel a little overdone at this point. There’s always something appealing about a good mix of geekery, comedy and action...

STARGATE UNIVERSE - EXAMINER.COM: Julie McNiven talks Mad Men, Supernatural and Stargate Universe
by Ken Murray
May 27th, 2011
Maybe the name doesn't scream out at you right away, but if you watched popular television over the past few years, you've clearly seen Julie McNiven. With roles on Mad Men, Supernatural, and Stargate Universe plus stints on Fringe, Desperate Housewives and Brotherhood, Ms. McNiven has surely popped up on your DVR. What you might not know is Julie is actually a Massachusetts native. She grew up in Amherst, Mass. where softball, swimming and gymnastics occupied her early childhood only to be trumped by theatre and dance after her first role in a musical in 8th grade and because of that she wanted to be an actress from age 10 or 11. She received a BFA from Salem State University and moved to NYC. That wasn't the end of her Boston time though. She did a few shows at the BCA and spent a summer singing on the harbour cruise "Spirit of Boston." In NY she met her husband and after a few years pounding the pavement there, the couple moved out to LA. They got married in Malibu last summer. The former Lindsay Lohan stand in was kind enough to answer a few interview questions for me about her experiences on television and what's next with her career...
Julie McNiven as Ginn from Stargate Universe courtesy of MGM
... Ken: So you worked on Mad Men which is a critical and commercial hit, and worked on Supernatural and SGU both very high up on the cult status, if you could pick one type to do again, the critical hit or the cult hit, what would you choose and why?
JM: "I had such amazing experiences in all three! It would be hard to choose one. With Supernatural and SGU, the scifi aspect is very exciting...I mean, come on, I 'died' twice on each show! Supernatural was great because my character changed so much from beginning to end, always keeping me on my toes. Mad Men on the other hand was extremely challenging because Hildy didn't have a lot to say, so when she had a scene I wanted to have a full fledged character, not just a secretary who pops in every once in a while. SGU was fun because Ginn was the girl who could be giddy as hell exploring her love for Eli, but she could also take charge and shoot a man who is threatening the good guys. Honestly, the critical hit vs. cult hit doesn't matter to me at all. My happiness on each show was purely based on the people I got to work with and the roles I was given to create..."

GAME OF THRONES - TV GUIDE: Jason Momoa's Secrets to Playing a Naked, Eyeliner-Wearing Dothraki Warlord
May 26, 2011
by Hanh Nguyen
Jason Momoa can't wait for fans to hear what Khal Drogo will say next, especially following last week's shocking Game of Thrones conclusion, in which he gave his brother-in-law Viserys a "golden crown" of molten death.
In Sunday's episode, "You Win or You Die" (airing 9/8c on HBO), an enraged Drogo delivers a lengthy speech after his wife Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is threatened. It not only reveals his martial side, but also shows that the previously quiet leader of the nomadic Dothraki can string together more than a couple words...
... Although playing such a role and dealing with its rigorous language requirements were new to Momoa, physically at least, he seemed born to play Drogo. In fact, he had just finished shooting Conan the Barbarian, the remake of the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film in which Momoa plays the titular warrior. When he went on to shoot Game of Thrones in Belfast, Ireland, he found the muscle mass acquired to play Conan helpful to embody Drogo.
"It was great coming off of Conan because it was really hard training," says the actor. "For Conan I had to eat boiled chicken breast and work out all the time and basically eat like a bird every two hours and stay ripped. But I'm bigger in Game of Thrones. Drogo is like 7-feet tall in the book. So after training really hard for five months, when I got to Ireland, I had Guinness, pizza, spaghetti and whatever I wanted. You put all that fat on top of the muscle and you look heavyweight. I gained so much weight. Later, we had to go back for a photo shoot and I was 30 pounds lighter. I didn't even fit into my wardrobe, the minimal wardrobe that I had..."

... Lake Placid 2
10:00 PM, SYFY
OK, so "Lake Placid" was a bad movie. But it was bad in a campy, tongue-in-cheek kind of way; you knew it wasn't taking itself too seriously, which gave it a certain charm. That charm is missing from this attempt at a sequel, which finds the offspring of the first movie's giant crocodile all grown up and hungry. Cloris Leachman attempts to fill Betty White's shoes as a relative of White's potty-mouthed character from the original, but not even her Oscar-caliber acting skills can save this turkey -- er, croc(k).
