Game Of Thrones

(HBO, 9 p.m.)

We’ve heard the rumblings for months: War is coming. And that war will surely tear the TV world asunder, as the House of Games Of Thrones Devotees and the House of People Who Just Don’t See What The Fuss Is About clash over the second season of HBO’s A Song Of Ice And Fire adaptation. Tonight, expert Todd VanDerWerff and novice David Sims revive their campaign to quell dumb reactions like that New York Times review, cheering for Tyrion, jeering for Joffrey, and praising the television gods for four months where Game Of Thrones and Mad Men will run back-to-back.

WHAT2WATCH: HBO Returns To The Throne

... Thanks to its specific and thoroughly imagined world, and a heaping helping of premium cable sex and violence, Game of Thrones was a substantial hit in its first season on HBO. While the critical raves weren’t completely surprising given the respect for the George R.R. Martin source novels, it was noteworthy to see the series getting accolades within the industry. It received 13 Emmy nominations, a rare feat for a fantasy series, and Peter Dinklage (the token American in the cast) took the supporting actor Emmy home. Best of all, those are some dang big novels, so the show shouldn’t run out of steam anytime soon.

Many cable series display growth in their early years and especially between their first two seasons, so hopes are high for the second season premiere (Sunday, 9 p.m.). The major breakout characters from the first season are big parts of the premiere: Tyrion (Dinklage) tries to rein in the hotheaded Joffrey in King’s Landing, and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) has to fight for survival before she can start her comeback. She also has some dragons to take care of – yes, it’s that kind of show. Expect an hour which sets the stage for what’s to come while also providing plenty of action and plot development...

Game of Thrones season two premieres Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 9/8C on HBO.

... TV just keeps getting better this week with the return of HBO's "Game of Thrones" on Sunday. The second season of the series will cover the second book of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series called "A Clash of Kings." Season 2 will see many fan favorite characters come to life, including Jon Snow's love Ygritte ("Downton Abbey's" Rose Leslie) and Lady Margaery Tyrell ("The Tudors'" Natalie Dormer) who is promised to Renly Baratheon...

"Game of Thrones"

(9 p.m. ET on HBO) season premiere

The lavish fantasy drama makes its long-awaited return, and having seen it, I can vouch that it's a stunning and worthy distillation of the first few chapters of the book and an epic reintroduction to the series. In King's Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and his uncle Tyrion, who has been appointed Hand of the King.

But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. Robb Stark, son of Ned Stark, seeks autonomy in the North and has taken Cersei's brother Jaime prisoner in battle. Daenerys Targaryen looks to shore up her depleted power in the East with her three newborn dragons. Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late King Robert, rejects Joffrey's legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack. And Renly, Stannis' charismatic brother, has maintained his own claim since fleeing King's Landing. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildlings North of the Wall, adding fresh perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night's Watch.

Michael Keaton made a great ghost movie. We're talking about "Beetlejuice," not this forgettable 2005 attempt at a thriller. This is one of those flicks that used up all its best stuff in the trailer.
