GAME OF THRONES - MTV GEEK: NATALIE DORMER VIDEO INTERVIEW

3/29/13
By Kevin M. Brettauer

... Actress Natalie Dormer, who plays Margarey Tyrell on the series, seemingly anxious that self-labeling it “a phenomenon” may be “egotistical to say”, recognizes the show’s breakout, crossover success as a “cultural pivotal moment” that she has “not taken lightly”, nothing “how amazing [it is] to be a part of it.” Noting that at the previous night’s big-screen debut of the third season premiere that much of the cast had been approached with praise and adoration from the writing and production teams responsible for a long-running FOX animated series, Dormer smiled, saying “You know you’re in the zeitgeist if the Simpsons guys’re around”...

... GAME OF THRONES

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This new season manages to escalate things slowly, but surely, to a point where they’ve never been before, and Season 3 of Thrones benefits from the increased volatility. The best plot line, in the seasons sent for review, concerns the efforts of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) to assemble an army strong enough to claim the Iron Throne. Her search for that army leads to my favorite Game of Thrones scene to date, which involves some very liberal translations of different languages. For a full review, see Ed Bark’s Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... Game of Thrones

9-10 PM HBO, SEASON PREMIERE

This is the big one. This is the Game of Thrones season — based on roughly half of George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords — that fans of the fantasy saga have long been dying to see. "We always said if we can make it to season 3, we're going to be on for a long, long while," exec producer David Benioff says. "So many of the great dramatic scenes from the books happen to fall in this season." Just don't expect wild, wild Westeros drama right out of the gate. The premiere begins right where the finale left off, with Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) on the run from a White Walker; then it's off to Jon Snow (Kit Harington) meeting Wildling leader Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds), Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) avoiding his scheming sister Cersei (Lena Headey), and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on a sea voyage (two words: dragon fishing!).

As Season 3 opens, the Lannisters maintain their hold on King's Landing, though stirrings in the North threaten to alter the balance of power. Robb Stark (Richard Madden), king in the North, faces a major calamity as he tries to build on his victories. A massive army of wildlings led by Mance Rayder (Ciaran Hinds) marches for the Wall. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), reunited with her dragons, attempts to raise an army in her quest for the Iron Throne.

... War is also a constant in the sprawling, enthralling world of HBO's Game of Thrones (Sunday, 9/8c), where a veteran soldier observes in an upcoming episode, "There's a beast in every man, and it starts when you put a sword in his hand." Or hers. The females are every bit as fierce as the men in this grandly realized saga of combat and treachery between and sometimes within families, in a land where magic and dragons are making a comeback but where dragon ladies are seemingly always welcome. Villainesses don't come much colder than the calculating Queen Regent Cersei (Lena Headey), whether sparring with her impish and battle-scarred brother Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) or coddling her ogre of a son, the loathsome Bad Boy-King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson). And heroines rarely appear so alluring as the exotic outcast Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), whose majestic dragons come in quite handy as she assembles an army to help her take back the Iron Throne of Westeros. But the heart of this story involves the fate of the widely scattered Stark clan, whose matriarch Catelyn (Michelle Fairley, poignantly worn and weary) has presided over so much tragedy that when she bares her soul to her uncle, he responds with this truism: "It often comforts me to think that, even in war's darkest days, in most places in the world absolutely nothing is happening."

Those parts of the world we never see on Thrones, though the scope of this series is staggering, even daunting, jumping from deadly battles in the icy North to royal intrigue in sunny Kings Landing, with dangerously picaresque detours for others, including spunky little Arya Stark (the wonderful Maisie Williams) and on a very eventful road trip, cocky king-slayer Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his Amazonian captor Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). The cast of characters is so immense no single episode can contain them all; little Arya isn't even seen until midway through the second episode. (This is a problem that eventually affects George R.R. Martin's book series.) Still, if you miss a favorite character or storyline one week, just wait: Your patience will be rewarded the next. It will take Thrones two seasons to cover the events of Martin's third and most darkly magnificent volume, A Storm of Swords. So far (judging from the first four episodes), it's living up to our highest expectations.

THE GUARDIAN: Game Of Thrones' Hound on bumfluff, hugs and the magic of Wilko Johnson

Rory McCann has done his fair share of cleaving as Sandor Clegane. But, like his fanfic-inspiring antihero in Westeros, this Scots actor is a soulful sort of fellow

by Graeme Virtue
Friday 29 March 2013

By his own admission, Rory McCann is a big man, and he's struggling to adjust to the heat of Santa Monica. The towering Scot who plays Sandor "the Hound" Clegane – foremost sword-swinging badass in a series not lacking on that front – is in LA for a Game Of Thrones premiere and goblet-clanging celebratory shindig, along with 23 other stars from the show. "So about 20% of the cast," he chuckles...

 photo GOT3_SandorPoster1_zps64d6c52f.jpg

... So, newly unleashed, where is Clegane's head at for season three? "By disrespecting Joffrey publicly, he really signed his own death warrant," sighs McCann. "He's essentially an outlaw."

In the simplified economy of Westeros, surely his deadly skillset would make him attractive to potential employers, even without a reference?

"There's probably not many people who can overpower the Hound," he admits. "But he's got issues, he's the product of a brutal past. He needs therapy. Or maybe he just needs a cuddle." A hug looks unlikely: McCann is something of a hulk already and trained for over three weeks for a one-on-one fight scene in Season Three that he claims will change the Hound forever...

DOCTOR WHO - THE GUARDIAN: MATT SMITH Q & A

by Rosanna Greenstreet
Friday 29 March 2013

Matt Smith, 30, was born in Northamptonshire. He was pursuing a footballing career until a back injury at 16 forced him out of the game. A teacher encouraged him to join the National Youth Theatre, and he later studied drama and creative writing at UEA. He appeared on stage in Alan Bennett's The History Boys and his first major TV role was in the series Party Animals. In 2009 he was cast as the 11th Doctor Who, becoming the youngest person to play the character. The new series starts tonight on BBC1 [and in the US, on BBC America, at 8/7C]...

(Doctor Who's Jenna-Louise Coleman and Matt Smith.]

... Q: What is your earliest memory?

Matt Smith: "Getting my head cracked open at playschool when I was three. I was on a pirate swing and I fell under it and it sliced into my head. I had 24 stitches. If I ever shaved my head, I'd have a massive scar there."

Q: Which living person do you most admire, and why?

Matt Smith: "My dad, because he is full of integrity and good humour; and my grandad, because he's full of the same..."

TV GUIDE: The Weekend Playlist: Thrones vs. Dead, BBCA's Dazzling Who-Orphan Combo

Mar 29, 2013
by Matt Roush

... LOOK WHO'S BACK: The good doctor, as in Doctor Who (Saturday, 8/7c), that's who. "I never realized how much I enjoyed hearing that [Doctor Who] said out loud," exults the Doctor (the delightful Matt Smith) as a new season begins with a saucy new companion (Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara Oswald) who initially can't remember her past encounters with the Time Lord. But she soon finds him invaluable as she becomes ensnared in exec producer Steven Moffat's latest ingenious sci-fi scenario: a Matrix-like organization that uses wi-fi to harvest living minds, leaving (in the Doctor's words) "human souls trapped like flies in the worldwide web." Clara's response — "Isn't that basically Twitter?" — endeared her to me instantly. Doctor Who turns 50 this year, but hasn't lost any of its giddy exuberance and sense of childlike wonder.

For Who fans, Matt Smith is scheduled to appear as a guest on The Nerdist talk show, which joins the "Supernatural Saturdays" lineup at 10/9c. And on Sunday, the ongoing anniversary tribute series Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited (8/7c) salutes the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, with a retrospective including the 1970 classic Spearhead from Space...
