... Question: I have been a long-time follower of NCIS. I so loved season 2. I thought that Ziva David's character had so much depth. The fact of being a trained killer for her government and the humor of trying to fit in to the NCIS dysfunctional family was great. That's really the season that I became a loyal never-to-miss fan. Lately I have missed the dangerous, spur-of-the-moment Ziva. I read that the actress (Cote De Pablo) has mentioned she too misses the "old" Ziva. Is there any chance this season that we will see some of the spontaneous and dangerous Ziva? Last season was the first time that I was beginning to yearn for a bit less perfection from the characters. — Cindy
Matt Roush: You've got to think that having the entire NCIS headquarters blow up on them in the season finale would rattle their composure a bit. Maybe that will shake Ziva out of her torpor. I wouldn't lose hope...

... Returning for its eighth season, Fox's Bones (8/7c) spends its first hour extricating its heroes from the mess of last season's cliffhanger, which took on the eye-rolling task of setting up Bones (Emily Deschanel) to be framed for murder by the diabolical tech wizard Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds, the show's new Big Bad). Now a fugitive (in a hideous blonde wig) with Baby Christine by her side, having left Booth (David Boreanaz) twisting in the wind for three months, Bones makes her move to draw Pelant out by surreptitiously unearthing another of his past victims. The best part of the episode is watching the Squints she left behind rally to her cause. They miss her and would do anything — even in one memorable scene threatening murder — to clear her name...

Where were you when the lights went out?
That scenario, which has been played for comedy in the past, is the stuff of escapist fantasy-adventure in the more appealing and promising of two new network dramas premiering tonight. NBC's heavily hyped Revolution (10/9c) follows a long line of high-concept quick fades including The Event (same network, same night), Terra Nova (same night, different network), FlashForward, V, Alcatraz and so on. Will this make the grade where so many others failed? Or will Revolution, like the world it imagines, go dark before you know it? (I'm already hearing from many-times-burned skeptics unwilling to trust the network to keep the lights on long enough to let the story play out.)
To its credit, this collaboration of the erstwhile and prolific J.J. Abrams and cult fave Eric Kripke (Supernatural) isn't nearly as convoluted as many of the duds that came before. There's a Stephen King-like uncanniness to the premise, which is simple, stark and effective, as the entire world goes off the electrical grid in one startling moment. Cars, planes, (gasp) TVs and (horrors) cell phones all useless, all at once. Flash forward (sorry) 15 years later into a world that looks familiar yet is undeniably other, evolved into an agrarian, feudal society. Cities are dead and obsolete, the husks of automobiles have become terrariums, and people toil in their gardens, more or less peacefully — until the Big Bad Militia (personified by Breaking Bad Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito) comes along to stir up trouble and break up a loving family.
This is not a show you want to overthink — as in, why aren't they harnessing solar or wind power? Or, given the handsomeness of the young cast and their wardrobes, how did L.L. Bean stay in business during the blackout?
Best to just go along for the ride, which becomes a quest through a wrecked civilization by spunky, restless, newly orphaned Young Adult heroine Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos, channeling Katniss with her cross-bow prowess), who aims to reunite what remains of her family, which includes Danny (Graham Rogers), an asthmatic brother kidnapped by the Militia, and a distant ex-military Uncle Miles (Billy Burke, last seen as Brenda's smarmy nemesis on The Closer) who sullenly tends bar in a hotel (after 15 years?) like he's Rick from Casablanca until Charlie lights a fire under him. Instant Ninja! You may cry "uncle" — or possibly, shenanigans — as Uncle Miles lays waste to a horde of better-armed soldiers in the sort of over-the-top action scene they used to parody in the Raiders of the Lost Ark movies. (For the record, firearms are outlawed for civilians in this dystopia.) Vive la revolution?
There are worse ideas. And far worse shows this fall...

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET
SERIES PREMIERE: The biggest name behind the scenes here, J.J. Abrams, generates the biggest hopes for this series, but its pilot is much less than a Lost-like slam dunk. For one thing, Tracy Spiridakos’ teen heroine is an arrow-wielding toughie straight from The Hunger Games. For another, even in a show with such a high concept at its core — the power goes off, and never comes back on — the notes of incredulity are deafening. When she goes to find her uncle in the blacked-out city of Chicago, he’s literally the first guy she meets. Suspending disbelief isn’t enough. You have to slaughter it. COLLIDER: Creator Eric Kripke Talks REVOLUTION, How It’s Different from SUPERNATURAL, and Ideas for Future
by Christina Radish
September 16th, 2012
The NBC drama series Revolution, premiering on September 17th, tells the story of a family that struggles to reunite in an American landscape where every single piece of technology — computers, planes, cars, phones and even lights — has mysteriously blacked out forever. The show is centered around one strong-willed young woman, Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos), whose brother is kidnapped by militia leaders, forcing her to reconnect with her estranged uncle (Billy Burke), in order to rescue Danny (Graham Rogers), overthrow the militia and ultimately re-establish the United States of America, all while they explore the enduring mystery of why the power failed and if it will ever return.
During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, show creator/writer/executive producer Eric Kripke (Supernatural) talked about how the idea for the show started, how both J.J. Abrams (as executive producer) and Jon Favreau (as the pilot’s director) got involved, wanting to tell a character-driven adventure tale, how Revolution will have a slightly different and less snarky tone than Supernatural, his decision to immediately address the fact that the lack of electricity is not quite what it initially seems, the challenges of going from doing a show with two main characters to doing a show with a large ensemble cast, and how he already has a really solid idea about what Season 2 is, as well as possible notions for Season 3...
... Collider: When you do a show that’s so complex, with the concept and all these possible stories and characters, was there one thing that it started with?
ERIC KRIPKE: "There was, as a matter of fact. When I am kicking around show ideas, or really any idea, usually an image comes to me. I don’t really start with a character or a logline like, “What if the electricity turned off?” I was just noodling on an idea from an image of two guys having a sword fight, Lord of the Rings style, but instead of some kind of English Stonehenge, vine-covered structure as their backdrop, they were doing it in front of a vine-covered Starbucks. It was honestly that. And then, I started thinking, “Can we make America into a feudal kingdom, where we can have adventures and heroes and villains and love and loyalty?” It was just about coming up with a setting where you could tell a really classic, epic, sweeping adventure saga that was a very Joseph Campbell type of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings world.
I wanted to tell an old story that was about a journey, the way that Star Wars is the same story as The Lord of the Rings, which is the same story as The Wizard of Oz, which is the same story as The Odyssey. There’s one great story, and it’s big and it’s sweeping and it’s epic and it’s complicated. I wanted to tell that story, using the advantage of the medium of series television. The disadvantage that Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings had, as much as I’m a slave to those movies, is that they don’t have 22 hours a season, hopefully, to tell that story and to really flesh out every facet of their world. I thought this would be a great opportunity to use the television medium to really be able to dive, neck deep, into that type of story. So, it started with that. Honestly, it was about coming up with some version of, 'Okay, how do transform the American landscape into a setting where you can have adventure and excitement?'”

SFX MAGAZINE: Doctor Who “The Power Of Three” Writer Chris Chibnall Interview
by Dave Golder
September 16 2012
“The Power of Three”, the fourth episode of Doctor Who’s seventh series, is heading our way on Saturday. Below, we’ve got an exclusive interview with writer Chris Chibnall, but since the BBC has also released its own bunch of interviews about the episode today, let’s have a quick butchers at what he has to say in the official gumpf first.
The episode features an invasion of Earth led by black cubes, and when asked where the inspiration for this came from, Chibnall comments: “A few years ago, near where I live, the MSC Napoli got stuck in Lyme Bay. A lot of its contents got washed up on to shore and people just started taking the contents. I wanted to do a story based on humanity’s ability to go ‘Oh look at that I’ll take that.’”
This will, of course, be Chibnall’s second script of the series after “Dinosaurs On A Spaceship”, and he says that, “Doctor Who is the best show to write for, because of the actors and the scale of imagination that it demands. Being asked to do the impossible, it is the best job in the world!”
However, he admits that it can be tricky to pack the story into the lean 45-minute running time, remarking that, “The show demands big ideas and big stories told in a relatively short period of time. It is an incredibly technical show to write for...”
... SFX Magazine: “The Power Of Three” sounds very different to “Dinosaurs On a Spaceship”. What’s the conceit behind it?
Chris Chibnall: “It’s Doctor Who from Amy and Rory’s point of view. We’re in the last days of the Ponds as everybody keeps saying, and it was really a chance to see where they’ve got to in their lives since “The Eleventh Hour”, and to see what it’s like to be them. And I think what’s interesting is that the companion/Doctor relationship in this series is very different to any we’ve seen before because really, they’re part-time travellers.
“They’re living at home, and the Doctor pops in and goes, ‘Shall we go somewhere?’, and they’re off. That’s very new, because they’re not permanently with him, and I wanted to see what that would mean. So it’s very different to ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship’, and I think it’s very different to pretty much any other episode of Doctor Who ever, which is both wonderful and terrifying. It’s got a very different structure, a very different feel, and there’s a threat to Earth in there as well, so it’s a really unusual episode...”
