TV GUIDE: THE BEST TV SHOWS OF 2012
... 5. The Walking Dead
The third season of The Walking Dead kept the adrenaline pumping not just by killing zombies (though they've done plenty of that), but by highlighting the bleak truth that their living adversaries are even scarier. The sword-wielding Michonne (Danai Guera) and the smooth-talking Governor (David Morrisey) are formidable human foes. The continuing threat of zombie attacks (RIP, T-Dog and Lori!) have driven Rick (a never-better Andrew Lincoln) toward the darkest edges of his humanity. On The Walking Dead, though, it's hard to really know just where that edge is, if it exists at all.
The Walking Dead season 3.5 premieres Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 9/8C on AMC TV.

... 9. Game of Thrones
This year, Game of Thrones turned Westeros on its head. With Ned Stark dead, the battle for the Iron Throne became fiercer than ever. Alliances were made (and betrayed), while the promise for power exposed people's true motives. While we lost many beloved characters, we made many new friends and enemies as well. Though the series sometimes verges on the convoluted, Game of Thrones proved once again that viewers don't have to sacrifice thought-provoking character study to enjoy some visceral blood and gore. Fringe has a tradition of going all-out strange for the 19th episode of every season, but Season 4's trip to the future is particularly enlightening, since the current fifth season takes place in 2036. THE INDEPENDENT: Interview with ‘Doctor Who’ star Matt Smith: ‘The essence of the show is the same – old alien, hot chick travel through the universe’
By Neela Debnath
Monday, 24 December 2012
Neela Debnath caught up with Matt Smith on the set of ‘Doctor Who’ to talk about the upcoming Christmas special ‘The Snowmen’ and working with Jenna-Louise Coleman...
... Q: What is the difference between the dynamic of the relationship between you and Karen and you and Jenna?
Matt Smith: "Fundamentally, they are different people, so therefore they are different actors. Steven [Moffat] is absolutely writing a different companion and the Doctor is a different man to when I first started. He’s a bit more fully formed now but he’s lived a bit more. He’s got a bit older, he’s lost a lot more and all those things affect how a character is. Add into that, a different type of companion. She’s [Jenna’s character] a completely different type of companion because she’s a completely different person who belongs to completely different times.
The Doctor under Amy and Rory eventually became like their pet, he was just this sort of strange pet that could talk, that would sweep in every now and then. He’s meeting someone new because he presents himself in a hew light and she forces him to be a different version of himself slightly.
As always with Doctor Who, the essence and heartbeat of the show is the same – old alien, hot chick travel through the universe and get into capers. That will always be the heartbeat of the show and it’s whether it’s more flirtatious, whether there’s more attraction, whether there’s more zing, you’ll have to wait and find out. I’m sure we’ll cover all that territory..."

... FIREFLY MARATHON
Science Channel, 7:00 a.m. ET
Science Channel has gotten a lot of mileage out of this 2002 Joss Whedon sci-fi series, but – like all Whedon series – it holds up extremely well to repeated viewings. Since this show came and went (too quickly) on Fox, for example, Nathan Fillion, who plays the Rockford-like Captain Mal, has risen to stardom in the title role of ABC’s Castle, and Morena Baccarin, as the for-hire “companion” Inara, has spent the past two years playing Mrs. Brody on Showtime’s Homeland. But this time around, watch, in particular, for the “Our Mrs. Reynolds” episode at 1 p.m. ET. It features a tour de force chameleonic performance by guest star Christina Hendricks, who, at this point, still was five years away from playing office sexpot Joan on Mad Men.

“Doctor Who” Christmas specials are a holiday tradition for die-hard fans of the British sci-fi classic. But the story is classic “Who”: The good Doctor travels to Victorian times to battle an evil physician (Richard E. Grant) and an army of creepy snowmen who don’t look at all jolly.
