STARGATE UNIVERSE - CHICAGO TRIBUNE: 'Stargate Universe' series finale preview with Brian J. Smith

By Curt Wagner
May 9, 2011

Stargate Universe” ends its voyage tonight, with an episode that, while not intended to be a series finale, works well as one.

In “Guantlet” (May 9, Syfy), Eli (David Blue) and Rush (Robert Carlyle) discover a way to track the drone command ships, only to learn that the drones have blocked the Destiny’s path to every planet with gate and to any star that could repower the ship. The Destiny can stand and fight, or run and slowly run out of power and supplies.

With few options available to him, Col. Young (Louis Ferreira) backs a last-ditch, highly risky plan Eli has devised. The episode is rife with suspense, butting heads and amazing space battles. But there is also a sense of cooperation among the crew as the battle the drones. It foreshadows what might have been in a Season 3.

"Guantlet" was written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, and directed, appropriately enough, by Andy Mikita, who directed the series opener.

No one involved with the production knew that “Guantlet” would be the series finale while they were filming it, Brian J. Smith, who plays Lt. Matthew Scott, told me earlier this year. (The series cancellation came later.) But they did realize that things looked bleak for the series, with ratings so depleted since Syfy had moved the show out of its Friday night spot to Tuesdays.

Photobucket

... Smith knows that “Stargate Universe” became the most controversial series of the franchise, and that many people will not look back fondly. But he, like I do, feel it will hold up well over time. When I asked him what he wants fans’ lasting impression to be, he was a bit stumped.

“That is a great question and it’s hard to answer, too, because people’s responses are so individual and it’s so idiosyncratic,” he said. “The people who I talked to who have enjoyed the show and have followed us from the beginning are going to remember that this was a smart show that had a lot of heart. [It was] full of characters who really cared about not just their own survival, safety and their own basic needs, but about everybody around them..."

STARGATE UNIVERSE - TV SQUAD: David Blue & Brad Wright on the Finale & Future of 'Stargate'

by Mike Moody, posted May 9th 2011

It's a sad day for 'Stargate' fandom. After only two seasons, the third series from the sci-fi franchise, 'Stargate Universe,' is coming to an end.

The cancellation of 'SGU' leaves the TV landscape without a 'Stargate' show for the first time in 14 years. The series finale, titled 'Gauntlet,' airs tonight (Mon., May 9, 9PM ET on Syfy).

'SGU' experienced a creative upswing in its second season, but the show fell victim to low ratings following Syfy's decision to move it from Fridays (AKA, nerd TV night) to Tuesdays last October.

Still, it's hard to pin down exactly what led to the show's cancellation. Perhaps a better timeslot, a more profitable year for cash-strapped studio MGM, or a more patient audience could've saved the moody, ultra-serialized 'SGU' from the chopping block.

But there's still one more hour of spacefaring fun to be had with Eli, Rush and the rest of the Destiny crew before 'SGU' flies off our TV screens forever.

Tonight's series finale ends on what could be described as a cliffhanger, but the episode offers an appropriate sense of finality while also staying true to the show's spirit of exploration (both personal and the "final frontier" kind).

'SGU' co-creator Brad Wright and star David Blue chatted with AOL TV recently about the series finale, the cancellation and about that rumored 'Stargate' TV movie...

Photobucket

... Is this really the end of 'Stargate'?

The show's cancellation and the death of the movie project still stings for both Wright and Blue. For Wright, the end of the show also means the end of a 14-year career as a writer and producer of 'Stargate.'

"I feel proud," Wright said about the 14 years and 17 seasons of 'Stargate' he's leaving behind. "But I'd by lying if I didn't say it's a shame 'SGU' was canceled. It deserved at least a final season, and where we were going with the story was very cool.

"Shepherding the final episodes through the post-production process, sitting in mixes, etc, I kept thinking to myself This show got canceled? But business is business. And as I said to our crewmembers as we said our final goodbyes recently, 'Time to start typing something else.'"

... Blue said that the future held big things for the Destiny crew, especially for Eli, whose personal journey was arguably the heart of the show.

"Would I prefer we were doing more seasons or a few movies? Hell yes!," said Blue.

"But I hope people will continue to watch it. I hope that, a few years down the line, somebody will tell me they just discovered the DVD and they fell in love with the show," he continued.

"I think we told some cool stories. I think we really existed in the 'Stargate' world. And, with the way things end up [in the series finale], I really feel like it's going to continue in the hearts and imaginations of the fans."

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Fringe, The Voice, Justified, Glee and More!

Send questions to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow on Twitter!

... Question: To say that I loved the season finale of Fringe would be an understatement. It was amazing! And I know I will be thinking about it all summer long, so I applaud the fantastic writers of this show. What did you think? — Rachel

Matt Roush: I thought what most of the readers of this column probably imagine I thought: Wow! As an hour of emotionally engaging and suspensefully perplexing entertainment, I thought it was a terrific way to end the show's very best season to date. (And so, it seems, did those who've weighed in so far in my mailbox.) Time paradox storylines are always tricky, and risk annoying fans who may see it as a tool to paint the writers out of sticky corners. And I admit, when I hear mumbo-jumbo like Future Walter telling Future Peter, "I can't change what happens because it's already happened, but you can make a different choice within what happened," I'm like, "OK, if you say so." I was shocked when Walternate shot Olivia in the head point-blank, and thrilled at the leap the show took by bridging the two worlds together in the present so the two Walters and the two Olivias come face to face. When Peter vanished mid-pep talk, I did an "uh-oh" followed by a (probably universal) WTFrak when the Observers announced that Peter never existed. That might have been one too many cosmic twists to suit me, but I am enjoying this Fringe ride more than ever, and I'm not about to caution these writers to ease up on the mad fun.

BLASTR: TV THIS WEEK: Stargate and Smallville sign off forever, and more!

By Kathie Huddleston
on May 9, 2011

It's a big week for Stargate and Smallville fans as Stargate Universe and The CW's Superman prequel end their runs. After 14 years of Stargate and 10 years of Smallville, television is not going to be the same without them. This week, we'll also get season finales for The Vampire Diaries and Nikita.

Also, Chuck and Sarah have a rescue mission to take care of before their wedding on Chuck, Sophia puts her plan for wiping out the humans into action on The Event, Will and Henry's double date gets complicated on Sanctuary, Howard tells his mother he's getting married on The Big Bang Theory, Damon finds that dying isn't easy on The Vampire Diaries, Alex goes rogue on Nikita, Morgan's castle gets attacked on Camelot, the Doctor believes there may be another Time Lord alive but in trouble on Doctor Who, Rob Estes stars in a Hallmark movie called Edge of the Garden, The Cleveland Show heads to Comic-Con and the King issues orders Ned struggles with on Game of Thrones.

Here's what we have to look forward to this week on sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal and spy-fi TV, and non-sci-fi shows that have sci-fi content or guest stars...

... Stargate Universe (Syfy) 9 p.m. - "Gauntlet"

Series finale! After nearly 14 years of Stargate on television, the Stargate will finally close with Stargate Universe. While the Drone storyline hasn't been as intriguing as the crew learning they had descendants via other versions of themselves, and I've missed the complex battles between Col. Young and Rush as they've started to work together to survive, it is undoubtedly the end of an era. In the final episode, the crew discover they are in deeper trouble than they thought when they learn the Drones are waiting for them at every planet with a Stargate. How do you think the series should end?

FALLING SKIES - TNT VIDEO: "The Attack Begins" Premieres June 19 '11

This summer, the attack begins and nobody on Earth is safe. Tune in Sunday, June 19 at 9/8c for the premiere of Falling Skies!

Falling Skies opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.

At the center of the series is Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), a Boston history professor whose family has been torn apart. His wife was killed in the initial attack, and one of his three sons has been captured. Determined to get his son back and to ensure the safety of his other two sons, Tom must put his extensive knowledge of military history to the test as one of the leaders of the resistance movement known as the 2nd Mass, because of their location in Boston, Mass. They are constantly trying to gain intelligence about the aliens in order to one day outsmart and overtake them and hopefully rebuild their lives.

Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) co-stars as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic upheaval in their lives. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT's Into the West) plays a fierce leader of the resistance, Weaver. The series also stars Drew Roy (Secretariat) as Hal, Tom's oldest son and a growing fighter in the resistance movement; Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom's youngest son; Connor Jessup (The Saddle Club) as Ben, Tom's son who was captured by aliens; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned teenager who helps Anne in the group's makeshift medical clinic. Colin Cunningham (Living in Your Car) is John Pope, the leader of an outlaw motorcycle gang and Sarah Carter (Shark) is Margaret, a wary survivor of Pope's gang.

FALLING SKIES focuses on the resilience of the survivors and their determination to maintain their humanity when all else has been destroyed. It is a tale of endurance, commitment and courage in which everyday people are called upon to become heroes. They may be outmatched, outnumbered and outgunned, but nothing can beat the human spirit. Most of all, the series is about the ties that bind people together in the most difficult of circumstances.

The aliens in the series are mighty, mysterious and merciless. They are highly intelligent and use military-like tactics, which makes them an overwhelming force against the 2nd Mass. There are two types of aliens that the human survivors have named Skitters and Mechs. Combining live action and special visual effects, the Skitters have spider-like bodies and incredible strength and agility. The deadly, robotic Mechs stand upright and can shoot bullets from their arms. The aliens control captured children, like Tom's son Ben, through bio-mechanical harnesses but have yet to reveal their ultimate plan for them.

FALLING SKIES is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, along with DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, Graham Yost (Justified, The Pacific) and screenwriter Robert Rodat. Rodat, who earned an Oscar® nomination for his screenplay for Saving Private Ryan, wrote the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. Mark Verheiden (Heroes, Battlestar Galactica) and Greg Beeman (Heroes, Smallville) are co-executive producers. The pilot was directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move, Out of Time).

(9PM, SyFy) series finale

Something happened when 'Stargate Universe' returned to the schedule this spring. Rather than tucking its tail between its legs, it produced some stellar episodes which reminded folks of the older shows of the franchise -- 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate Atlantis.' Sadly, they won't be continuing this trend into another season, for tonight marks the last episode of 'Stargate Universe.' While there's no description of the show's last telecast, don't look for everything to be tied up nice and neat to close out the series. Odds are they'll leave enough holes open for fans to write their own storylines.

STARGATE UNIVERSE - SCIFI PULSE NOW: Patrick Gilmore Audio Interview

SFP-NOW Episode 17

For episode 17 Wayne Hall steps through the Stargate and does a fantastic job of interviewing Patrick Gilmore, who is best known to fans of Stargate Universe as Dr. Dale Volker. During the interview Gilmore discusses his role in SGU and also talks a little about his role in the hit web series Riese among many other things.

This Week In Television sees Wayne and I very briefly discuss the last episode of Doctor Who, which concluded the two part season opener, and we also discuss the last couple of episodes of Supernatural, which saw the return of Crowley. This Week In Comics saw us joined again by Gianluca Glaser, who gave Wayne and I the low down on future comics, which led to a great discussion about the recent controversy surrounding issue 900 of Action Comics, which sadly overshadowed a fantastic conclusion to The Black Ring storyline by Paul Cornell.

So why note join us as we trip on through the ever changing worlds of science fiction and fantasy in comics, television and movies.

FRINGE - SKY ONE: John Noble Video Interview

[Sky One was] incredibly excited to sit down for a chat with star John Noble and find out what's in store...

And boy, did John have some juicy gossip for us! Character deaths, flash-forwards to the future, and inter-reality hook ups are all on the horizon in the show's final three episode.

But it's not all good news for die-hard Fringe fans, as Mr Noble is fairly sure some will be upset with the direction the show has taken. He did, however, assure us that all the principle cast will return for season four… just perhaps not as we know them.

... Stargate Universe

(Syfy, 9 ET/PT)

flies its final voyage tonight, as this latest installment in the Stargate franchise completes its TV run.

Fans are still trying to save it, but assuming they fail, can one of the networks please find something else on TV for Robert Carlyle to do?

He's a fine actor and, as the British series Hamish Macbeth proved, a charismatic star, but U.S. networks haven't seemed to be able to place him properly. He's worth another shot.

Season Finale: Thursday at 8pm ET on The CW

After last week's shocking bloodbath that left multiple key characters dead, this week's season finale can't help but feel a bit anticlimactic. Still, there are a few loose ends to tie up: Damon flashes back to his encounters with Katherine back in 1864 while dealing with Elena in the present day. Plus, Sheriff Forbes commits a grave error while trying to keep everyone safe.

SERIES FINALE, 9pm, Syfy

This poor show. It started out with so much potential! An awesome cast, a gritty, serious style reminiscent of the Battlestar reboot, a tragic mythology, and very little to do with the previous Stargate cheese-fests. But then no amount of pointless sex-scenes or confusing rejiggering could make this thing work, and so tonight it limps across the finish line, a solid sci-fi show that could have been so much better! For those of you who stuck it out, tonight our intrepid crew will finally attempt to shake the approaching drones and hopefully reach a destination that’ll bring everything full circle.
