Brian J. Smith: Great Scott!

When Stargate Universe began last year, Lt. Matthew Scott was among the military, civilian and scientific personnel to walk through the Icarus Base Stargate and into an unknown future aboard the starship Destiny. Since then, the lieutenant’s mettle has been tested, both personally as well as professionally. Life proves no less complicated in Season Two as Brian J. Smith tells Steven Eramo on the show's Vancouver set...

You and Louis Ferreira shot a very powerful scene together for the episode ‘Trial and Error’. How did you prep for that?

That was one of those scenes that you basically read and went, “Wow, this is something really special.” The dialogue is fantastic and both characters have very specific actions to play, so in one sense it was quite an easy scene because it was so well written.

That said, Louis and I talked a lot about it, and I actually went to his house one day to read over the scene. We even got up on our feet and tried to imagine how it [physically] played out. It’s great when you’re so turned on by a piece of material that you and your buddy set aside a Saturday to work on it!

A lot of times you study your lines, show up on set and it’s like, “OK, here we go.” On SGU, though, there are always things for the entire cast to do. There’s information that has to get out in scenes, and others where it’s about reacting to CGI aliens. We also get to do stunts and shoot guns. But for us, what’s really interesting are the scenes about relationships, where our characters are trying to come to terms with and change each other.

Syfy: Riese: Kingdom Falling - NEW Episodes Available Online

A NBCUMV Press Release:

Syfy’s award-winning steampunk online series Riese: Kingdom Falling is going to an epic new level with five never-before-seen episodes that begin running at www.syfy.com/riese today, Thursday, November 11. In the new episodes, Smallville’s Allison Mack makes her debut as the scheming Marlise, a character who threatens to change the balance of power in the politically charged kingdom of Eleysia while Riese continues her struggle to come to grips with her past.

After reintroducing the original five episodes online with the addition of Sanctuary star Amanda Tapping, this marks the next step of Syfy’s successful relationship with the creators of Riese.

Narrated by Amanda Tapping, the 10-part Riese: Kingdom Falling stars a cavalcade of talent from the world of popular speculative drama including Christine Chatelain (The Collector); Sharon Taylor (Stargate Atlantis); Ben Cotton (Harper’s Island), Allison Mack (Smallville); Ryan Robbins (Caprica); Patrick Gilmore (Stargate Universe); Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica) and Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary).

Riese: Kingdom Falling is about Eleysia, a dying kingdom where resources are dwindling and compassion is fading. Distrust and anxiety have clouded people’s minds, causing a regression into primitive ways of thinking. People have grown restless, almost feral. Rituals and mythology have resurged, and the darker side of mankind has begun to reveal itself.

"Riese: Kingdom Falling" won the Streamy Award for Best Cinematography in a Web Series with a further three nominations for Best Sound Design, Best Foreign Series and Art Direction. The series was shot in Vancouver, BC, created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff, and produced by Galen Fletcher and Nicholas Humphries.

Riese (Christine Chatelain), a wanderer, travels across the decaying lands of Eleysia with her wolf, Fenrir. Marked as a heretic by religious group The Sect and the new Empress, Amara, Riese must evade their assassins and discover their true intentions for Eleysia.

Riese is the Crown Princess of Eleysia, forced to flee into the wilds after her family was slaughtered. She will soon serve as a catalyst for a disparate group of supposed heretics, the Resistance, launching them into civil war.

The series will also be available via Sony’s PS3, Microsoft’s Xbox and Amazon.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that features anachronistic technology and design elements, often from Victorian-era Britain.
