Fairly Legal - USA Today: Sarah Shahi Interview

USA TODAY: Sarah Shahi turns cheerleading into 'Legal' experience
By Nancy Mills, Special for USA TODAY
January 24, 2011
Sarah Shahi started her professional life as a cheerleader. It was a career move, not a lifestyle choice.
"I was singing in a production of 'Chicago' at my college, Southern Methodist University, and I wanted to be an actress," Shahi, 30, says. "But I didn't know how to do it in Texas. One of the dancers said, 'Why don't you try out for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders because they have something called the show group and they need singers and they were on Saturday Night Live back in 1995.'"
So, she did.
"Cheerleading was my way in. It was one of the most rigorous audition processes ever. It definitely groomed me for Hollywood. I'd never been a cheerleader, but I'd danced. And I was captain of the volleyball team and the basketball team, and I ran track."
Shahi made the team for the Cowboys' 1999-2000 season. She then moved to Los Angeles and worked her way up from playing, guess what, a cheerleader on the series City Guys to top billing in the new USA Network drama Fairly Legal, which premiered Thursday (10 ET/PT). She plays a lawyer who becomes a mediator because she is fed up with the injustice of the justice system.
"My character Kate doesn't spit out a bunch of legal jargon," Shahi says. "She knows the law and how to manipulate it in her favor. She's not dependent on any male relationship. She's incredibly strong, strong-willed, opinionated and tough. She holds her own, but she's got flaws. She's not St. Kate..."

Primeval - Total SciFi Online: Ben Miller Interview

TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Ben Miller Interview
The set-up of the ARC may have changed, but James Lester is still there, sarcastically in charge, and Ben Miller admits that he’s delighted to be back on Primeval – the show he describes as “resurrected from beyond the dead!” Words: Paul Simpson
Paul Simpson: Once you knew Primeval was returning, did you talk to Adrian Hodges and Tim Haines about what was coming for Lester this year?
Ben Miller: "I did talk to Tim. What we all felt had been very successful in the third series was Lester having somebody to battle with, and we very much decided we’d like to have that element in this series.
The big change from Lester’s point of view is that rather than the ARC being a government funded department, there’s this science and technology mogul, Philip, who has taken over the whole thing. It’s now a public/private partnership of the type that have proved universally disastrous across the whole of government!
Lester is now enmeshed in this messy situation where he has to deal with this mogul, who has a lot of say in what goes on in the ARC because he’s funding it. He is constantly compromised because this guy is his boss, so that’s been fun to play. He’s also dealing with the Minister, as ever, but this Richard Branson figure has his own agenda, and Lester constantly has to square things with him, and navigate around him. It’s fun for Lester too, because he loves politics.
The ARC also gets a massive upgrade and a major injection of funds, which doesn’t hurt in the sexiness of the whole thing. There’s this new building, a huge menagerie..."
Primeval is currently airing on Saturday nights (ITV1)[UK] and on BBC America at 9/8C.

‘Being’ himself
Vampire role on Syfy’s ‘Human’ pumps life into young actor’s career
By Amy Amatangelo
Monday, January 24, 2011
Sam Witwer almost made the biggest mistake of his career.
He first passed on the chance to audition for Syfy’s “Being Human” (tonight at 9). “You talk about the show, and you go, ‘A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost,’ and then you almost reflexively follow it up with, ‘walk into the bar,’ ” Witwer told the Herald in a recent telephone interview.
A friend convinced him to actually read the script.
“I read it and thought, ‘Wow, this is incredible.’ The show has so much potential. This is an irresistible character in terms of what type of things I want to be doing with my time.
Witwer, best known for his run as the villain Doomsday on CW’s “Smallville,” was cast as Aidan, a more-than-200-year-old vampire who lives with two fellow supernatural roommates in a Boston brownstone. The actor, who grew up in Glenview, Ill., knows that some of the fans of the original BBC series of the same name are upset that Syfy is remaking the show...

... Castle
(Monday, 10/9c, ABC)
Two things happen this week that fans have been long awaiting: First, a new twist in the very cold case regarding who killed Beckett's mother. Second, and a much bigger deal to many, a kiss between Castle and Beckett, taking all that unresolved sexual tension to a fever pitch. It all begins when the now-retired detective on Beckett's mom's murder unearths new info but is killed before he can share, leading Beckett and Castle to peel back a conspiracy behind the slaying. Nothing brings people closer together than crime-fighting — on TV, anyway.

Chuck has pluck, but does he have luck? He didn't have much last week. With engagement ring ready to go, he was about to pop the big question to Sarah when she was abruptly whisked away on an undercover mission. The big proposal will have to wait for our lord of the ring, as Sarah goes deep into the dark shadows and assists Mary Bartowski (Linda Hamilton) in a bid to finally crush monumental baddie Alexei Volkoff (Timothy Dalton). On the domestic front, Ellie and Awesome bicker over baby names.
