TV GUIDE: Matt's Guide to Monday TV: September 26, 2011
Sep 26, 2011
by Matt Roush
My initial Take on Fox's Terra Nova (two-hour premiere at 8/7c): "Bigger isn't always better, but in this case, it may be enough. Terra Nova will win no prizes for its cardboard characters and clunky writing, but hey, it's got CGI dinosaurs! This is the fall's grandest escape and riskiest swing." To elaborate: This lavishly produced family-friendly sci-fi time-travel adventure isn't what you'd call edgy — from Steven Spielberg, it has Jurassic bark, but not much bite — and it lays on the "starting over" schmaltz a bit heavily as we follow a family through a Stargate-like portal into a settlement 85 million years in the prehistoric past on a separate time stream, giving humans a second chance to create a civilization without destroying the planet. (The dystopian prologue makes the world of Blade Runner look like a musical comedy.) If you can make it past the exposition, and the earnest family clichés — a rebellious teenage son, an awkward brainiac daughter — there's plenty of satisfying dino action. And it all looks gorgeous. Precious little on network TV feels like an "event" (not to be confused with The Event) anymore, and if this can't take a bite out of the competition, it may be a while before we see its like again...

TERRA NOVA - USA TODAY: 'Terra Nova' aims to be a dinosaur-sized hit
Dinosaurs are far from the only big thing about Fox's Terra Nova.
By Bill Keveney
September 26, 2011
With one of the most expensive TV pilots ever (roughly $15 million), Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, location shooting in Australia and state-of-the-art special effects so complex that they delayed production, the prehistoric drama is one of the most anticipated new shows of the fall season, with a two-hour premiere Monday (8 p.m. ET/PT).
Fox is taking an expensive gamble that viewers will take a shine to the Shannons, a 22nd-century family that time-travels to a dinosaur-age colony designed to give errant mankind a second chance on Earth.
Could it become television's Avatar— or perhaps the next Lost? Or will it become the next Lone Star, last season's hoped-for hit that quickly got lost?
Avatar's Stephen Lang, who plays Terra Nova's colony leader Nathaniel Taylor, likes the fact that Fox is going big. "I do have a special affection for stories with sprawl. I like sagas. I like epics," he says. "I'll take a symphony over a minuet as a rule..."

TERRA NOVA - MANIA: TV Wasteland: Steven Spielberg Presents Land of the Lost
Otherwise known as Terra Nova...
By Rob Vaux
September 25, 2011
The biggest gamble of the season lands on Fox Monday as Steven Spielberg unveils a new dino-centric series that could make or break genre programming for years to come. Terra Nova posits a time-travel scenario where future residents of a ravaged Earth journey back to the Cretaceous Period and attempt to eke out a new “future” for mankind. There’s a lot to get excited about – putting the words “Spielberg” and “dinosaurs” together creates a magic tingle, and the presence of Avatar bad-ass Stephen Lang in the cast sets a lot of concerns at ease.
On the other hand, the show also raises some troubling questions. How convincing will the effects be? Will they overwhelm the storyline? Conversely, will budgetary constraints leave us with nothing but people shouting at each other amid the ferns and palm trees? Then there’s the show’s supposed centerpiece of an “ordinary family” in these surroundings… prompting hideous visions of dating issues and workplace rivalries while velociraptors run rampant around them.
The biggest concern is that Terra Nova is on Fox, which does not treat struggling genre shows kindly. A nightmare scenario entails a great show, middling ratings and a time slot that bounces from day to day before an agonizing cancellation watch midway through the season (aka Firefly redux). As we said, it’s a risk: for the show, for the network and for any fans who tune in. But it also qualifies as something a little different in an era when the Big Four Networks are hedging their bets in every conceivable way. In the spirit of good television, we wish it all the best. We’ll all see what it has to show us this Monday night, September 26, at 8:00 PM EDT...

The Future: Earth is a burned-out smogopolis choking to death from environmental decay, and the only hope for mankind lies 85 million years in the past.
Life on Mars' Jason O'Mara and British actress Shelley Conn play struggling spouses looking for a fresh start with their three kids by quantum-leaping to an Eden-esque military-managed settlement (Avatar grouch Stephen Lang is the head honcho) terrorized by man-munching dinosaurs and rebels with a cryptic agenda.
Terra Nova arrives after nearly a year's delay and much tinkering — apparently it ain't easy to make a Jurassic Park-style spectacle on a TV scale. But the unabashed ambition demands attention, and the stable of sci-fi-savvy producers (including Steven Spielberg) inspires hope. Besides, you can't have fun cracking wise about potentially cheesy dino CGI if you don't watch!

(8PM ET, Fox) series premiere
The long-awaited, super-hyped and mega-expensive sci-fi drama finally lands on Fox this week, but is it worthy of the buzz? Surprisingly, yes. Some of the dialogue is leaden and lord knows how many times we've seen the "obnoxious teenager" archetype on genre shows, but I have a certain fondness for "event" TV, and this action-packed premiere is engaging enough and sets up plenty of potential mysteries for the season ahead. Gather your whole family for the spectacle.
