Dutch actress Carice van Houten first came to the attention of American audiences in Paul Verhoeven's subtitled, Nazi action movie Black Book (and then as Tom Cruise's wife in the under performing Valkyrie). She's back Stateside with the launch of the second season of the HBO series Game of Thrones, in which she plays the red priestess Melisandre, who'll be backing Stannis in his bid for the crown. Before that, however, the actress will have two new films in theaters in March: a bit part in the horror movie Intruders, and a starring role as suicidal South African poet (and Nelson Mandela favorite) Ingrid Jonker in Black Butterflies, a film for which she won the best-actress award at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. Houten put in a transatlantic call to Vulture the other day, to chat about small-pond superstardom, her need for more colorful projects, and nude scenes...



... Q: Liam Cunningham plays someone who loves you in this movie [Black Butterflies]. In Game of Thrones, he plays someone who hates you. [Editor's note: He plays Ser Davos Seaworth.]


Carice van Houten: "It's so funny to work with him again. And this time, I get to throw him in a prison. But I better not say too much about Game of Thrones, or Mr. HBO will kill me."

Q: Even though what Melisandre does is in the books? Can you really worry about spoilers at this point?

Carice van Houten: "Not everyone has read the books. Including me! And sometimes, the writers will veer slightly off the path..."

CNN ENTERTAINMENT: Meet the 'NCIS:LA' star who won 'Dancing' in another country

(CNN) -- For the past two seasons, Daniela Ruah has played junior field agent Kensi Blye on "NCIS: Los Angeles." But the vivacious olive-skinned actress first became famous in another country: her parents' homeland of Portugal. She even won the Iberian version of "Dancing with the Stars."

Ruah is descended from a family of doctors. Her father is the former resident chief of otolaryngology (which is a fancy word for an eye, ear and throat doctor) at Boston University Hospital and her 92-year-old grandfather still practices medicine. The family moved back to their homeland when Ruah was 5.

Fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English, Ruah moved to London at 18 to attend university and eventually made her way to New York to study at the Lee Strasberg Institute.

In her little time off, Ruah loves spending time with her dog and decorating her recently purchased home. She recently spoke with CNN about her show, her heritage and the advice she gets from a famous co-star...



... CNN: Your character has a big story arc this week.

Daniela Ruah: "We knew from season one that her father died when she was a teenager and this is the unveiling of what happened. She grew up never believing he had died accidentally. She's always believed foul play and she's been pursuing this her entire life.

She gets asked, "What are you going to do when you find the guy you think did this to your dad? Are you going to shoot him?" And she says, "Well, what if I do?" It's a big dilemma between killing for vengeance and going the right way and dealing with things legally. There's a lot of turmoil going on inside her and it affects the team..."


NCIS: Los Angeles airs Tuesday at 9/8C on CBS.

Next week’s episode of Being Human (Sunday 4 March at 9.00pm on BBC Three and BBC HD) sees the return of Adam, the deceptively youthful vampire previously seen in an episode of season three ['Adam's Family'], as well as red-button spin-off Becoming Human. On-set during the filming of series four, SFX spoke to returning guest star Craig Roberts about returning to Honolulu Heights...

... Q: I was surprised to hear you were returning to Being Human, because Submarine was a massive success. And it did seem like Adam’s story had come to a full stop.


Craig Roberts: “Yeah I wasn’t meant to come back, I don’t think. Becoming Human had a pretty good response, it did pretty well. But they didn’t think I’d come back. Then I bumped into Toby [Whithouse] at BAFTA and I was like, ‘What are you doing? Have you written the episodes?’ He said, ‘Yeah’ and I said, ‘Am I coming back?’, and he’s like ‘No’, and I was like, ‘You’re a c**t!’ But yeah, I was like, ‘I wanna do it! Bring me back’, so they brought me back, which I’m really happy about. Adam’s just an excuse for me to f**k around, it seems..."

Their subsequent friendship has forever altered Kenzi’s life and introduced her to a world she never knew existed. For actress Ksenia Solo, who plays Kenzi, it was the beginning of a brand new TV adventure and taking on a role she has worked hard to make her own.

“Kenzi is such a special character because she’s not one-dimensional. In fact, she’s the exact opposite,” says Solo. “She’s a thief – a very successful thief – and this really brave, tough girl. At the same time she’s also vulnerable as well as extremely loyal and bright. Kenzi is all these kinds of wonderful things, and as an actor you want to be believable playing this girl who grew up on the streets. There are so many aspects of her that I have found challenging, but that has really fueled my fire. I’m not happy unless I’m challenged, and I’ve had to help build this character from the ground up. When I was first ‘introduced’ to Kenzi I thought, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t do this,’ which is why I knew I should do it...”



... With production on season three of Lost Girl scheduled to begin in a couple of months, what are Solo’s hopes not only for her character of Kenzi but also the show as a whole going into its third year?

Ksenia Solo: “My hope is that we continue to grow and get better, that we continue to have strong storylines, that our characters really shine in the best way possible, and that we continue to make a kick-ass TV show that people love to watch and are entertained by,” says the actress. “You never want to stay stagnant, especially me as an actor. I don’t want to play the same note all the time. I want to explore different sides of Kenzi, and I hope she experiences more awesome adventures. I love doing the action and the fight scenes. Falling in love isn’t so bad, either. I know Kenzi’s heart is a little sensitive after season two, but it’s always neat to introduce someone who can sweep her off her feet. So I just hope the fun continues,” she enthuses...
