VANCOUVER SUN: Josh Dallas casts a spell on Once Upon a Time
By Alex Strachan
October 31, 2012
“They probably wouldn’t believe it was really me, if I went to Halloween as Prince Charming, so I think I may do exactly that,” Josh Dallas says, taking a moment to find shelter from the morning rain on the Steveston, B.C., set of Once Upon a Time. “I can see it now: ‘That’s a really good costume. You really look like that guy!’”
“That guy” is Prince James — also known as Prince Charming — in Once Upon a Time lore. He’s a poor shepherd whose twin brother was given as an heir to King George, part of a deadly deal with the ever-scheming Rumpelstiltskin. Sadly, the real Prince James is killed in battle after agreeing to slay a dragon for king and country, and it falls on Prince Charming to take his brother’s place.
Dallas is not really Prince Charming, he insists. He just plays said prince on TV.
Still, the dashing actor comes by his TV swordplay and Hamlet-inspired inner turmoil (“That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain”) honestly: Though born in Kentucky and raised in Indiana, he studied the performing arts at the Mountview Conservatoire for the Performing Arts in London, England, after being awarded the Sarah Exley scholarship, given every three years to a promising acting student from the U.S. At the callow age of 20, Dallas landed his first professional gig — with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The London stage beckoned and, after that, The Young Vic, New Shakespeare Company and the English National Opera...
Once Upon a Time airs Sundays on CTV at 7 ET/MT/PT and on ABC at 8 ET/PT.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Primeval: New World's Niall Matter - Cross Purposes
by Steve Eramo
10/30/2012
You would think after all his years of playing Zane Donovan in Eureka that actor Niall Matter would have pretty much seen it all when it comes to the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres. Well, not necessarily. In the new SPACE Channel series Primeval: New World – a spin-off of the hit UK show Primeval - his character of micro-tech genius Evan Cross heads up a team that investigates “Anomalies” or rifts in time that allow animals and people from the past as well as future access to present-day Vancouver, British Columbia.
At the same time he is dealing with this threat to humanity, Cross is also struggling with his own inner demons, including the death of his wife, as Matter explains.
“Evan Cross is, first of all, an inventor and visionary,” says the actor, who has very kindly come into the New World studios on a very rare day off to talk about his work on the show. “He’s also the leader of this team of dinosaur hunters, if you will, or should I say dinosaur wranglers who are trying to get these creatures back into the Anomalies. They’re not really looking to kill them, but, in fact, return them to their proper points in time.
“My character is very loyal and determined as well as stubborn at times and headstrong. As the [first] season of the show progresses, though, that stubbornness begins to diminish and he starts realizing that people around him are being affected by his overzealous decision to chase after these Anomalies. He chose to kind of ignore personal relationships, which we see throughout the season, and I think his eyes are beginning to open up to the fact that there’s more to life than this obsession of his..."

... FRANKENSTEIN
TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET
On Halloween night, another prime-time classic: Turner Classic Movies presents the original Frankenstein film, made in 1931 – only four years after The Jazz Singer ushered in the cinematic sound era. Maybe that’s why Boris Karloff, as Frankenstein’s monster, had so few lines of dialogue. I suspect other reasons -- and I also expect that tonight's entire TCM lineup, for Halloween fans, will be a monster hit. Also on the schedule: 1939's Son of Frankenstein at 9:30 p.m. ET, 1941's The Wolf Man at 11:15 p.m. ET, 1932's The Mummy at 12:30 a.m. ET, 1940's The Mummy's Hand at 2 a.m. ET, 1933's Island of Lost Souls at 3:15 a.m. ET and 1933's The Invisible Man at 4:30 a.m. ET.

VANCOUVER SUN: Once Upon a Time stars caught up in the magic of B.C.
Kind of like the weather, ‘it’s all around us,’ Goodwin says
By Alex Strachan
October 30, 2012
In this world and the next, weather is the great equalizer. Once Upon a Time may be a fairy tale about magic kingdoms, star-crossed damsels, charming princes, spells of enchantment and the power of imagination, but real life has a way of intruding on reel life, often at the most inopportune moments.
On this cold, dark late October morning, a lean, hard wind and sheets of driving rain knife across the Steveston, B.C., flats just as the heroes and heroines of TV’s most magic hour spill on to Moncton St. — Main Street in the present-day town of Once Upon a Time’s imaginings...
... On the first take, Ginnifer Goodwin, playing Mary Margaret — she also plays Snow White in Once Upon a Time’s fairy-tale world — is ebullient, laughing easily as she links arms with her fellow actors Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas and Jared Gilmore. On the second take, the smiles and laughter are still believable but this time, when [first-assistant director Morgan] Beggs calls, “Cut!” the group huddles together for that one moment of extra warmth before the third take. By the end of the third take, Goodwin and Morrison’s teeth are chattering as Dallas — Prince Charming in Once Upon a Time’s fairy-tale kingdom — and a pair of crew members offer blankets and heavy coats.
The episode, the ninth in Once Upon a Time’s second season as one of Sunday night’s most beloved, avidly followed and most watched primetime entertainment programs, is called Queen of Hearts, and is tentatively slated to air on Nov. 25...

10-11 PM CBS
Though the procedural jumped the shark hundreds of grisly murders ago, the ongoing traumas of the Las Vegas police department's forensics division plow forward unabated, despite the fact that Ted Danson still doesn't seem to have un-stoned himself from his Bored to Death stint. This nonspooky Halloween episode spends most of its time following Nick's (George Eads) quest to solve the murder of a canine-division member, with the fallen cop's four-legged friend as the prime suspect. There's also talk of bath salts and a steady parade of hookers, just to remind you that central Nevada is a huge bummer. Despite its by-the-numbersness, the hour scores redemption points by letting you fill in the "Dog That Understands Only French" box on your procedural bingo card.

ANGE FINCH (Miranda Frigon), Evan's oldest friend and business partner, keeps Cross Photonics afloat while Evan and his Special Projects Group track escapee dinosaurs, with the overeager help of LIEUTENANT KEN LEEDS (Geoff Gustafson), head of the government’s decommissioned department for investigating alien life and other mysteries - including Anomalies. Throughout Season 1, the characters quickly gain expertise in the prehistoric creatures they hunt, the weapons they need to handle them, and the nature of the Anomalies themselves. They face danger side by side, and come to rely on each other for not only survival, but comfort and intimacy as well.

... Question: As an avid reader of your column, your opinion on things, even shows I don't watch, I find useful and interesting. I'm curious to know if you think Once Upon a Time is treading dangerous waters in terms of over-casting this year. Last season you wouldn't be able to find an episode without Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin or even Lana Parrilla. This season all were missing from one and only appeared during the last minute in another. While I still find the show enjoyable, it still seems odd to not have those actors appear at all. Do you think too many characters are appearing in Storybrooke and can it hurt the show if core actors continue to be MIA? — Jeffrey
Matt Roush: I'm not sure the problem is too many characters as much as an overly fragmented narrative, with some episodes split between what's happening in Storybrooke, the back story of characters in Fairy Tale Land, and the current exploits of Snow, Emma and whoever in the post-curse fantasy land. Jumping around so much within an hour can leave even a fan unsatisfied, which is why the recent episode that focused entirely on Rumplestiltskin's encounter with the soon-to-be Captain Hook was one of my favorites — in part because it didn't keep shuffling as much between the worlds (ignoring Snow and Emma altogether for a week) and because Hook is so far the best and most vividly played new character of the season. (The less we see of the vapid Princess Aurora, and even the surprisingly wan Mulan, the better.) As mentioned in the discussion about Revenge, I'm all for a show expanding its world from season to season, and Once Upon a Time is especially well suited for that, with a wondrous gallery of fictional legends to choose from. I liked this week's riff on Dr. Frankenstein more than I expected, including the homage to James Whale (who directed the classic Universal Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein movies) in the naming of the Storybrooke doctor. But getting back to your question, I agree it's a risk if they separate some of these core characters from the meat of the rest of the show for too long a time...

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Haven's Kate Kelton - The Human Touch
by Steve Eramo
10/28/2012
At The Gun & Rose Diner in the seaside town of Haven, you can be guaranteed a warm welcome as well as a good cup of coffee and some interesting conversation. One of the diner’s employees and someone who is not shy about voicing her opinion is waitress Jordan McKee. Described as “spirited and fierce,” she is much more than meets the eye. Like several of her fellow townsfolk, Jordan is among “The Troubled,” and possesses quite a powerful little supernatural quirk.
This is, however, not the waitress’ only connection to this particular group of people, and actress Kate Kelton, who plays Jordan on Syfy’s hit series Haven, relished the chance to reveal her character’s many sides to viewers. “Jordan has been a dream to play because she is so multi-layered and very passionate,” says Kelton. “There are some similarities to me, but obviously the main difference is that Jordan has a Trouble, like many in Haven, and it’s a pretty gnarly one, too. My character is unable to touch anyone and vice versa because she tends to be a human taser.
“Jordan’s cover job is working as a waitress when she’s not working with The Guard, an entity that protects the town’s Troubled. They’ll explore that much more on the show this season, but there’s something to be said about playing a character that can’t touch anyone and being an actress who does touch people as part of my performance. I had to rethink every little action, especially playing a waitress where you would naturally brush up against someone anyway. So making adjustments to how I carried my body and moved with it were definitely called for.
“It was wonderful to see Jordan actually use her Trouble. I had a conversation with one of Haven’s writers and we were talking about the fact that the show was born about the time that another program called Heroes was on NBC. Its story was obviously touting superhero powers, and Haven wanted to do a different take on that, where the very real repercussions of having these so-called superpowers come into play. Jordan’s development had quite a bit to do with how she reacts to using her own power as well as how it impacts her personality..."
Haven airs Friday at 10/9C on Syfy.

A murder that looks like a ritualistic killing leads Beckett to an unusual, and unusually close, prime suspect: Castle. But as whodunits go, my guess is that someone else dunit. Otherwise, this series is dun, too.
