Thousands of science fiction fans gathered at the Maritim Hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany last month to celebrate Fedcon XX, the anniversary edition of Europe’s largest sci-fi convention. Four days of games and contests, lectures, prop and art exhibits, Q&A panels, autograph and photo sessions were sure to offer everyone something to enjoy. Fedcon XX featured 19 star guests from a variety of sci-fi shows including Star Wars, Firefly, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Millennium, and of course, Stargate.

Stargate fans were delighted to get the chance to meet up with Tony Amendola (“Bra’tac”), Kate Hewlett (“Jeannie Miller”), Paul McGillion (“Carson Beckett”) and star guest Richard Dean Anderson (“Jack O’Neill”), as well as some Stargate guest stars like Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Marina Sirtis (“Svetlana Markov” in “Watergate”) and Deep Space Nine‘s Nicole de Boer (“Alison Porter” in “Whispers”)...



... The main Stargate attraction was Richard Dean Anderson, of course. It was his first visit to Fedcon, and the room, which could seat over 2500 people, was filled up to the rafters for both of his panels. At the start of his Q&A session Anderson was greeted on stage by a large gathering of fans dressed up in Stargate uniforms and costumes. He saluted them and went on to answer lots of questions about his time on MacGyver and Stargate...

Eckhart and Swank lead a team of "terranauts" determined to dig their way deep inside the Earth to correct the situation, which is about as thrilling as dirt, appropriately enough.

Red Faction: Origins is both a Syfy original movie and a movie based on a videogame, so expectations really could be lower only if it were also directed by schlockmeister Uwe Boll. But instead it's helmed by Michael Nankin, responsible for many episodes of Battlestar Galactica, and he certainly tries to employ here what he learned on that show. It's definitely not at that level, but with significantly higher production values and better acting (including from T-1000 Robert Patrick) than the vast majority of Syfy ventures, it easily steps up and over a bar that's set so very, very low.

HBO's extraordinary 2009 made-for-TV movie, "Taking Chance," is being repeated over the Memorial Day Holiday.

Based on the true experiences of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl, who wrote eloquently of them in a widely circulated 2004 article, Taking Chance is a profoundly emotional look at the military rituals taken to honor its war dead, as represented by a fallen Marine killed in Iraq, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Working as a strategic analyst at Marine Corps Base Quantico in VA, Lt. Col. Strobl (Kevin Bacon) learns that Phelps had once lived in his hometown, and volunteers to escort the body to its final resting place in Wyoming.

As Strobl journeys across America, he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military, and all those involved with preparing and transporting the body, handle their duties. Equally important, he encounters hundreds of people affected by Chance's death, a vast majority of whom never knew him. This collective grieving eventually causes Lt. Col. Strobl, a veteran of Desert Storm now assigned to office duty, to probe his own guilt about not re-deploying to Iraq for the current conflict. Arriving in Wyoming, Lt. Col. "Sanctuary" is at once an epic disaster and a huge success story.

No one can attest to that more than Amanda Tapping, who stars on, co-executive produces and occasionally directs the show, which kicked off in 2007 as an eight-episode Web series and will close its third season as a Syfy Channel hit, with a fourth season currently in production...



... Tapping is on the telephone to discuss the final two episodes of Season 3, "Into the Blue" and "Out of the Black," which will air on June 10 and June 17, respectively.

"Once again 'Sanctuary' paints itself into what seems to be an impossible corner to get out of," Tapping said, laughing softly. "When we got the pickup for Season 4, we were like, 'Aha, how are we going to get out of this one?' At the end of Season 2, a tidal wave was heading toward Earth, and, at the end of Season 3, we have no idea where we are or what will happen.

"Our story line about Hollow Earth plays very big.

"There's a huge insurgence that happens, which the Sanctuary team has to deal with. The government has become more involved than we've ever wanted them to be, and Magnus finds herself in the most ridiculous and unexpected place.

"So the start of our fourth season has all been about, 'How do we quell this uprising, and how do we get Magnus back?' " Tapping said. "I think the only way you can creatively continue is to scare the crap out of yourself and try to do something that everyone says is impossible. That's how we've always rolled."

A unique byproduct of "Sanctuary" is something called Sanctuary for Kids. Spearheaded by Tapping, it's a not-for-profit organization that raises funds for children in crisis throughout the world. Since 2009 the sale of "Sanctuary" scripts, autographs, set visits, Skype chats and such has raised more than $250,000 for Sanctuary for Kids.

"I'm super-proud of this initiative," the actress said.
