SCIFI AND TV TALK: Primeval: New World's Geoff Gustafson - An Officer and a Gentleman

It has been a busy working week for Primeval: New World’s Geoff Gustafson, and now he is ready for the weekend. Looking spit and polish, the actor is still dressed as his character of Royal Canadian Air Force officer Lt. Ken Leeds as he sits down to chat about his work on the Sci-Fi series, which is a spin-off of the successful UK show Primeval. Apparently, Gustafson looked quite un-military like when originally auditioning for his New World role.
“When I went in the first time to read for the character of Ken, who back then was called Ken Lang, I had long hair and a beard, which I just loved,” he says with a smile. “A lot of times these TV pilot auditions feel like a real cattle call and sometimes you get the sense that you don’t stand a chance, but I felt good about what I did.
“About a week later I was shooting a commercial when I got a call telling me that they [the New World producers] wanted to see me again, only this time clean shaven and with a haircut. So I did that second audition and a few weeks later began work on the show. We had already done a read-through of the first script and seen some samples of the CGI [computer-generated image] that were going to be used on the show, so everyone was really excited, especially with the UK Primeval being such a popular series. The hope is that its fan base will move over to support us as well.
“Getting to see everyone on the first day of work and the reality of the situation was very cool. This cast is so talented and has tons of experience, so you couldn’t help but think, 'Wow, we’re starting something that could be a success.' That was a pretty nice feeling. On top of that, we had [executive producer] Martin Wood directing, who seems able to weave ‘magic spells’ and make hit TV series, so we had all that going for us from day one...”
Primeval: New World cast includes Eureka's Niall Matter, Sara Canning, Danny Rahim, Crystal Lowe, Miranda Frigon and Geoff Gustafson.
