SCIFI MOVIE MARATHON - TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES - SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2013
09:30 PM 2010 (1984)
In this sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, a U.S.-Soviet crew investigates a mysterious monolith orbiting Jupiter.
Cast includes Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, Keir Dullea, Madolyn Smith Osborne, MacGyver's Dana Elcar, Taliesin Jaffe, James McEachin, Mary Jo Deschanel, Elya Baskin and Herta Ware.
11:30 PM Forbidden Planet (1956)
A group of space troopers investigates the destruction of a colony on a remote planet. Sci-fi version of Shakespeare's The Tempest remains one of the most ambitious and intelligent films of its genre; only slow, deliberate pacing works against it, as [Leslie] Nielsen and fellow space travelers visit planet where expatriate [Walter] Pidgeon has built a one-man empire with daughter [Anne] Francis and obedient Robby the Robot. Great effects, eerie electronic score.
Cast includes Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Maverick's Jack Kelly, The Six Billion Dollar Man's Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman, Robby the Robot, George Wallace, The Virginian's James Drury and Harry Harvey Jr.
01:30 AM 20 Million Miles To Earth (1957)
A crashed spaceship unleashes a rapidly growing monster from Venus. First spaceship to Venus crashes into the sea off Sicily, with two survivors: pilot [William] Hopper and a fast-growing Venusian monster that just wants to be left alone (but fights back when frightened). Climax takes place in the Colosseum in Rome. Intelligent script, fast pace, and exceptional special effects by Ray Harryhausen make this one of the best monster-on-the-loose movies ever.
Cast includes Perry Mason's William Hopper, Joan Taylor, Frank Puglia, John Zaremba, Thomas Browne Henry, Tito Vuolo, Jan Arvan, Arthur Space and Bart Braverman.
03:00 AM Marooned (1969)
Three U.S. astronauts face a slow death when their rockets fail during a space voyage.
Cast includes Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, James Franciscus, Gene Hackman, Lee Grant, Nancy Kovack, Mariette Hartley, Scott Brady, Frank Marth, Craig Huebing and John Carter.
