Eric Mabius recycles, composts and is converting to solar power at home. "Things are getting worse and I don't pretend to know what the solution is — I leave that to the experts — but I think each person trying to reduce their carbon footprint is the right way forward. It's all that we can control on a daily basis," says Mabius, star of the new BBC America sci-fi series "Outcasts," about people who've fled a dying Earth to colonize another planet...

...His character Julius Berger arrives at the established colony on Carpathia with an agenda that will be revealed over time. "We know that President Tate [Michael Cunningham] is not exactly happy about him being there and we're not sure why. He's such a great character in that he's seemingly there to serve. I think that's what he truly believes," says Mabius, last seen in "Ugly Betty." "This is probably one of the most fun characters that I've ever played because he's not black or white."

Shot in South Africa, "Outcasts" premieres June 18 on BBC America.
