SCIFI AND TV TALK: Being Human's Sam Witwer - Waite And See
02/18/2013
by Steve Eramo
From the monochromatic menace Nosferatu to Hammer Films’ colorized toothy terrors of the Seventies and today’s buffed and moody twenty-something bloodsuckers, the fictional vampire has changed big-time over the years in feature films and TV.
Taking a shot at living outside the box is Being Human’s Aidan Waite. A little over three-and-a-half years ago, he decided to try a different approach to satisfying his bloodlust and existing as one of the undead. Aidan moved in with a werewolf as well as a ghost, and together they tried to live a “normal” life.
Sadly, things did not go quite as he had hoped. By the show's second season finale, Aidan’s own kind turned against him, killed his lover, stuck him in a wooden coffin and buried him. Fifteen months later and at the start of the third season, Aidan is “rescued,” but discovers that the supernatural world he left behind is now quite a different place. This revelation inspired actor Sam Witwer to revamp – no pun intended – his performance as Aidan.
“It was interesting because he had to be a different guy now, having been under the ground for a year-and-a-half,” says Witwer. “I called up [executive producer] Anna Fricke and said, ‘Hey, I’m losing weight and growing a beard, so Aidan’s going to look at heck of a lot different at the start of the season...’
... Besides Being Human, Witwer’s fans can also enjoy his work on the popular animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, in which he voices the character of Darth Maul. “Clone Wars has become something really special,” enthuses the actor. “In an upcoming episode there’s a plot point so challenging and messed up, that peoples’ jaws are going to be on the floor when they see it. It’s incredible. I watched it all at Skywalker Ranch and I’m very pleased with the work they’re turning out.
“If there are any Star Wars fans out there who haven’t watched The Clone Wars, my recommendation is go to iTunes, start with season three’s Nightsisters and then just power through the remaining episode. You’ll see some of the most fascinating Star Wars ever created and material that will reframe your perspective on even the original [feature film] trilogy.”
Being Human airs Monday at 9/8C on Syfy. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE EPISODE TRAILER FOR 'WHAT'S BLOOD GOT TO DO WITH IT?' AIRING FEBRUARY 18, 2013.
