A Pentagon cryptologist is found dead from an apparent suicide while the team is in the middle of a search for a mole there. Abby (Pauley Perrette) finds evidence to suggest that someone was with the victim at the time of her death.

The team investigates an off-base Navy lodge for visiting families after a room is found splattered with blood and human tissue, which Ducky (David McCallum) discovers are the remains of three people. They've been expertly dissected, probably by a doctor.

A drug dealer is brought into NCIS headquarters and drops dead while in an elevator with Ziva (Cote de Pablo), making her a suspect. Then the man's brother (Connor Trinneer) calls to inform the team that he's holding Director Shepard (Lauren Holly) hostage and will kill her unless they return his brother (who he doesn't know is dead) and his heroin.
Guest stars include Star Trek: Enterprise's Connor Trinneer, Bones' Tamara Taylor, Alex Nesic, Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ, Rodney Scott and Stephanie Mello.

Part 1 of two. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is hurt in a terrorist explosion, and Tony (Michael Weatherly), as senior agent, takes command, causing some bad feelings within the team. Meanwhile, the recovering Gibbs has flashbacks from his past that lead suppressed emotions to surface.
