... Masterpiece Contemporary: Page Eight

9-11 PM PBS

A contemporary British thriller starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, and Judy Davis, Page Eight refers to a bit of info gleaned by Nighy's intelligence analyst from a top secret government report. Written and directed by playwright David Hare, the film showcases Nighy's astringent sarcasm nicely, even as it alienates those he loves — which is Hare's plan, of course. Nighy, Gambon, and Davis are so good, you want to see them in a quicker-paced, more Hitchcockian espionage piece. But this is Masterpiece, where the silences hang portentously and Weisz is used as a sultry MacGuffin — the all-too-knowing girl next door. If you can get past the notion of Nighy being irresistible to every woman he encounters (I almost did), you'll get caught up in the carefully modulated intrigue.

Rated: B+
